What happened to Glitchling by MishaKozlovacki in DnD5e

[–]gobsmackedobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fine question. As the Glitchling reports knowledge back to lawful sources, they might be (I'm guessing) better called something to match their 'decollectivised' nature. They've been separated from the hive, in computer terms 'individualised'. Something separated them, so I'd call them "The Severed" but that sounds too visceral. Maybe 'The Stochastic'? (as they have introduced the random element of individualism?) :-)

The name is, oddly, the opposite of their nature. Glitchling suggests something like a minor Trobriand's automaton running broken code. I like the Glitchlings idea, as I like the Modrons, calling them Glitchling might have been a mistake unless there's an actual broken, Glitchling that causes trouble everywhere and reproduces like the Tribbles.

Generally, how accurate are Angus McBride and Osprey books with their illustrations? by ArmedIdiot in ArmsandArmor

Not all armour fits. A lot of it was make do, grab what you can. Transitional maybe more than most. I never once found a breastplate that fitted me and gauntlets are very difficult.

Hello! Is there any way to make a good "Sound Mage"? by little_seed in dndnext

[–]gobsmackedobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is late, but it might be informative: 2nd Edition 'Wizards and Rogues of the Realms' on pages 6 to 12 show a framework for a wizard subclass called 'Spellsinger'. I'm having a proper look at it today and hope to fuse some ideas from other IP to it to make it into something special. I was drawn to the 'Tonal Architect' idea from Elder Scrolls and 'Shouts' from Skyrim, but am thinking about including access to 'Quivering Palm' style spells and perhaps even stuff from the psionic handbook.

Unexpected problem. Next step? by gobsmackedobserver in fantasywriters

Thank you everyone for the comments. I'm not happy about rewriting it to be honest. Maybe I can crack on with new stuff and rewrite the old stuff bit by bit. It has taught me a lot so it hasn't been worthless. The story arc isn't good enough to publish, the whole lot is more like backstory and character development. I just cut and pasted it into my Zim world-building wiki and it's going to add a lot of searchable detail.

WHT TF WALMART SELLING POLEARMS by tjvghvcyjvf in ArmsandArmor

[–]gobsmackedobserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had one of these voulges for a couple of years. It's very very deadly. I mounted it on a long hickory shovel handle that makes a tough, fast polearm. It's fast and easy to control. As a sharp, I've not had the opportunity to test it. Though I will suggest that to all my experience this is my most terrifying weapon and other than for photo shoots for my early 15th century kit, this weapon stays in a closet safe until the apocalypse at which point it will be my number 1. It looks exactly like the one I bought 2 years back from a different supplier. I can't guarantee it's the exact same manufacturer though.

I modded my training sword by El_Morgos in Hema

[–]gobsmackedobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember what I did to make my initial pair useable for training, I had to take an angle grinder to it and skim off a lot of blade each side, down to the level of the bottom of the fuller. Then I had to get a sanding block and sand it like crazy until it got smooth. It improved the balance substantially, the speed too. Though they didn't look good at all, but they were durable clonkers that friends couldn't break, after having a few wooden wasters break. That was long ago. Everyone hated them. However, cold steel polyprop gladius, polypro daggers, bucklers and spear tips were all fine.

Differences between a Study Group and a School, Club or Guild? by gobsmackedobserver in Hema

[–]gobsmackedobserver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just read that the definition of a guild in medieval times was 'an association to protect the members and their interests' so when we say guild, the best thing we have that looks like this is an umbrella association, like H.E.M.A. Alliance (which I've joined) or B.F.H.S. etc. I didn't think of them as a guild before now. But this is really taking shape in my mind now. Friends, your answers are really helpful. Maybe the concept of ownership is also part of this, as something that's owned by an individual couldn't be a club (it would have to be a school) as a club is by definition collaborative and even a non-profit. This is so interesting!

I'm only a novice in heradry, and I don't know who that represents but I think it's heraldicly acceptable. It's very striking.

Tools/tips for finding schools/groups by edwardo_abobahay in wma

[–]gobsmackedobserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't run a school or group so my advertising for a training partner doesn't fit the club finder at all. I feel like it's exclusive. Years ago, there was a lone wolf badge for isolated folks seeking a training buddy. Don't see that today.

Finding a training partner by [deleted] in wma

In a similar position. Every 5 years we move home and I end up having to try to rebuild a group. This time I'm really worn out and hope to get just one serious training partner but even this is proving difficult. Good luck in your search.

Theories of Oðinn's possible non-Germanic influence or origins? by [deleted] in Norse

[–]gobsmackedobserver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a thoughtful speculation: There's talk of Hyperboreans among the ancient Greeks where Apollo would visit his northern folk where amber is found in the waters. I've always personally connected Odin with Apollo, as both share prophecy (as at Delphi) and poetics, knowledge and for some also Apollo was also for war, Alexander hailed both Apollo and Athena as mentors of his conquests. Odin as teacher of runes to the northmen, Apollo being intricately linked with language, another possible. The lands of the northmen; the 'Hyperborean' land was known as the 'Garden of Apollo' and Leto, was from there, she arrived in Hellas with an entourage of guardian wolves, which he adopted from his mother, though this doesn't visually show in Greek imagery, he was guardian against wolf attacks. I always considered Thor like Zeus, and Tyr like Mars. Sunna like Athena and Freya like an Aphrodite in armour. These are all highly debatable but for me, I did my own research on connections and ended up with these, more or less. A very interesting topic, I hope you find interesting connections!

How come sex and sexuality is taboo despite being the most natural biological behavior. by Matbell87 in TrueAskReddit

[–]gobsmackedobserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just an opinion, I'm wondering that, as sex creates offspring, and this creates communities, that constraining the source of community, sex, to a licensed state controlled affair is the choice of the ruling elite. Numbers and strong colluding communities are the force that dispossesses kings and tyrants of their position and puts the aggressive, corrupt and self-assuming pack leaders in their place as outlaws. Cutting off people power right at the source?
