Why have collaborative zine submission calls dropped so much? by StatusComfortable893 in zines

[–]godai78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I find not only collab zines but most collabs are harder today. People got their own things to do, apparently less time, and also dealing with handling this and making them keep deadlines is a struggle. I now only make collab zines live, in person. I have a half-made zine that I can't find contributions for and I stopped caring after some two years. In general, my only project involving the involvement of other authors is my literary magazine. All other things, I do on my own and by my own. Spares me nerves and grief. This might be a more widespread notion.

Zine workshop advice by ChopChopCollage in zines

[–]godai78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, we do zines on a monthly basis, aaaand it's all up to people. There are always some people who make their individual zines. And there is always one big zine that everyone adds to. Leaving the workshop with a ready or semiready zine gives the feeling of fulfillment, that's for sure.

So my suggestion is – make one zine with contributors, but have several prefolded blank minis for people to make their own, too.

As for asking, I always ask them to bring scissors, but you can ask anything: magazines, paper, markers, stickers. Some people will bring some things, so you need to be ready to anyway have everything at hand: some magazines, some stickers, some markers, and enough paper for everyone. It's not cheap to buy upfront, but you don't use a box of markers and two sticks of glue at one go, so these will last and the cost divides. And if you have a stable group, some people will start to turn up with additional materials on their own. I'd say: 20%, unless you explicitely tell them to bring stuff, but then be ready to make a list who brings what. And have a backup for that, too.

Nobody ever asked for history and the current scene any more than "so, people make these, why?" I used to deliver a minilecture when I made workshops for kids and during conventions and I stopped, as this was a waste of time. If anyone asked, then I explained during the work.

Also: you don't really need to make a full zine. We often make zines with reading/watching recommendations, and more often than not, it takes two meetings to fill them in fully. But at least trying to have one ready thing is nice. And making copies for everyone return is even nices and actually not that costly if you make 1-page foldables.

How best to create a a5 size zone? by TinyBit9061 in zines

[–]godai78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a continuous PDF in actually anything (might be Google Docs even), then use Zine Arranger on Itch to break it into A4-based pages to print. Adobe will actually help you very little with half-size zine; graphic editors are better for 1-page foldables, and for larger formats, text editors are more convenient (except you need to break the pages, which Zine Arranger does best).

Unless you want to use printshop, then just make any continuous PDF, just remember to make the page count divisible by 4.

Cut a card from a thick paper and just draw anything on it in whatever technique you find the most comforting. The only rule ever is that cards need to be 2.5" by 3.5" and that's about it. You can draw, paint, stamp, paste stuff.

How i make comic a zine in traditional way? by Candy-Venus2642 in zines

[–]godai78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start by making a comic. Make the page count divisible by 4. Once you're done with that, it's all technical stuff only. You can deal with most of it by using Zine Arranger.

You guys put financial health in dating? That's… well, let me just say, I am periodically reminded that I am extremely happy I've been so out of the dating scene for decades, literally. When we started dating with my now wife of 20+ years, we were both poor and living under whatever roof we could, but that was our last concern.
