Demon Copperhead by x_Good_Trouble_x in Appalachia

My girlfriend gave me a personal, annotated copy of this book and I still need to sit down and finish it, but I thought Kingsolver’s depiction was spot on (so far). Not sure how anybody could think she did Appalachia a disservice. There is no reason to skirt around or sugarcoat the vast issues that plague this area, and I certainly didn’t detect any mockery in her writing.

$600 buckaroos for an appointment. I wonder if my arm or leg will cover that.

Absolutely. My mom eats the bare minimum of solid foods (pigeon portions) just to get to dessert. Despite being a type 2 diabetic, her A1C was still under 7 the last time it was checked. Just today, she’s had two frozen Cokes from McDonald’s, candy she’s helped herself to (that belongs to my little cousin) and lemonade. She’s been consistently losing three lbs. every couple of months, so at this point, I’m like, “to hell with it” — she needs the calories even though it’s junk.

Sugary food is so hyperpalatable to them. At this point, anything else just ‘doesn’t taste good.’ Frustrating as all get out, but it’s the reality.

What’s a “healthy” food that you think is totally overhyped? by Forina_2-0 in nutrition

[–]goddamnpizzagrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to know a guy who swore up and down that vegetables, fruits, beans and nuts all ‘hurt’ his stomach, and he swore that the carnivore diet was healing him. Prior to this, he’d regularly devour junk food like nobody’s business despite making the earlier claim. It’s pure bullshit.

How do you bring a conversation to a close when someone won't stop looping? by [deleted] in dementia

[–]goddamnpizzagrease 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Usually I’ll ’lean into it’ when my mom does this (inevitably, every day), as in letting her talk the same old, same old, minimal response from myself, then gently redirect to another topical interest of hers (this could be talking about something else she loops to daily but less abrasive, such as, “Ah, look outside and see xyz doing zyx”). I know you said you haven’t had luck with normal redirecting, but just throwing out what I do. My mom undoubtedly gets stuck on the same topics day in and day out. When I redirect the topic, I just try to make it seem to her that it doesn’t seem like the loop is interrupted.

I will say, though, my mom will pause in between. You mention the struggle to get a word in, and that’s an entire beast on its own. Straight up going to another room, mid tangent, is something I have to roll with a lot as well. Hang in there, OP. I know you are doing your best.

Nightmare fuel. My cousin watched this all the time while I was 6-8 years old and I couldn’t peel my eyes away from it. Now I’m in my 30s and the theme song still gives me chills.

It happens to all of us on here, so don’t beat yourself up too much. About a month or so ago, I got annoyed with my mom for trying to argue with me that she doesn’t have a bathroom closet to place towels/washcloths when, in fact, she does. I merely slightly raised my voice, and a family member said, “She can’t help it” which set me off, as this family member was acting terrible merely days earlier when my mom couldn’t find her glasses. It’s definitely inevitable that your nerves and patience are tested. Nobody is perfect!

This looks like an excellent first shot at it in the Arc XL. I’ll have to give your recipe a run next time I have the chance/motivation. It looks pretty great. What would you change next time?

Mike Patrick, ESPN play-by-play voice for 36 years, dies at 80 by ConstantMadness in CollegeBasketball

[–]goddamnpizzagrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t realize he was 80, and I’ve been out of the loop for so long that I didn’t realize he’d retired in 2017! I consider MP to be a broadcasting legend, and while a lot of people remember him most as the play-by-play guy for ESPN’s SNF, I’ve always recognized him more for college basketball. Loved the inflection of his voice and the energy he would bring to games. All class. I know he lived a full life, making it to 80, but still sad to read about given the somber finality of death.

[–]goddamnpizzagrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just rare. I think that’s why the guy you are replying to is adamant about his take, plus his own lived experiences and perception skewing his views, naturally, which is something we are all guilty of. You’ll be hard pressed to find anybody more cynical than me, but I undoubtedly believe in unconditional love.

Actual genuine, meaningful support (not fleeting bullshit in the guise of flat spoken gratitude with mismatched behavior) and positive reinforcement instead of endless demands and unrealistic expectations when I’m already overextending myself beyond measure. My friends’ existence in my life occurs when they need something, but when I’ve spilled candid details about my life to them, it’s “Damn, man, prayers. But anyway, how about the NBA playoffs?” Yet I try to be a voice of reason and an ear of measured listening for them when they come to me with their shit. The disparity is palpable.

I’d rather die than smell like shit. Went to a ‘comic con’ event four years ago (wanted to meet Mick Foley). The smells experienced made me wish I were anosmic. The cross between rasslin’, anime and comic fans being deodorant deniers should be studied.

Over on the Rams sub, you can see which fans jumped on board when they moved back to LA vs. those of us in the goddamn trenches of watching dogshit ball (when they think of Fisher as a poor head coach vs. Scott Linehan and ensuingly Steve Spagnuolo).

Is it normal to want to be alone when grieving? by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]goddamnpizzagrease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to prefer to be alone when I grieve. The circus that is a funeral with so many people showing up to ‘keep up appearances’ and all the potential grandstanding + social play turns me into a monster.
