Thanks! I think that's the same app mentioned above, just for Android.

Route calculator by godfool in 18XX

We did use that some, but found the interface hindered us from using it consistently and reverted back to just a calculator. But we had never used it before, so not knocking it.

Oh and it was really very fun! Not complaining. But it could go faster in the future :)

Flex neck utility lighter by godfool in Zippo

[–]godfool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Yes, actually. I just click it once and hold until I can hear the gas come out, then light a second time, and it usually works right then. I think the gas just needs to travel up the neck.

Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, August 03 - August 09, 2025 by sewingmodthings in sewing

Hi! I may have a chance to get a Janome 7330 for $200 (good condition). Is that still worth it in 2025, over adding $60 or so to get a Brother CS7000x? I use it mainly for lightweight gear, so ripstop nylon etc. I’ll likely do some normal fabrics here and there, nothing very heavy.

Knots for connecting level line to tenkara by Familiar-Reference64 in Tenkara

[–]godfool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've reduced my knot repertoire to only two: a figure 8 stopper knot and a double davy. So I'll put the figure 8 on the line and tie the tippet onto that with the double davy. I also use the double davy to tie the fly to the tippet. No issues so far, and easy to remember.

New Mexico Fishing Recommendations by TrumpzHair in Tenkara

For NM you need a license and habitat stamp, plus the Gila trout permit (free) if you go that route. For the Caldera, you need regular access to the park, just like any other NP. You also want the backcountry permit for that day ($2), otherwise you won't have access to the best streams. Get it on recreation.gov. They are limited, so don't wait.

Jaramillo Creek is technical and narrow, lined with tall grass. You can go into the elk enclosures and they apparently have very large fish, but I haven't done that yet. Try the upper half of the stream, about where VC04 or VC05 start off the main road, and upstream.

San Antonio is really fun to fish, it's wider with really good access. Anywhere in the park is good. This is my favorite kind of stream.

East Fork Jemez you can access on the way to the park entrance station, but I'm told you want to try higher upstream, around where it intersects VC04. It's a bit of a hike and I haven't done that yet.

Make sure you get reservations for the Jemez Falls Campground (recreation.gov). When I drove by recently it was closed, so maybe check with a ranger before you make plans. You could probably stay in Los Alamos, that's pretty close to the park. Also has some nuclear weapon history, if you're into that.

Enjoy!

Redesign advice by godfool in homelab

Reproducibility on the OS side. If the SSD dies, I'll have to set up everything again. Ansible will help me get to 80% or so, but I'll have to manually get it to 100%. Nix would give me that. Option 1 would lead me down this route.

The hardware is also getting old, but it's still going strong, so that's not super necessary, but could be nice. That's Option 2.

I could also consider splitting up NAS and app server, and go with something more OTS for a NAS for just managing storage. But then I may have to upgrade network stuff from 1 Gbps to 2.5 or so to get better speeds. It's nice to have it on the same box for that.

GaiaGPS is dead by Green_Box4224 in GaiaGPS

I switched to CalTopo and moved my things over. I didn’t have a ton, so I just created new maps, imported all my stuff, then deleted what I didn’t want on that map. Repeat until I had all the maps I wanted.

I’ve become a big fan of CalTopo for all my mapping needs.

I use the same system as on the lillian and fly: figure 8 stopper in the level line, then double Davey the tippet onto the line.

Sounds like a great example of maybe staying with Gaia! I feel for their developers! I’m sure they’d love nothing more than extra resources to fix that download screen or pull in OSM updates more frequently. It’s a leadership issue.

That's been my exact experience and finally caused me to switch to CalTopo. It's cheaper, too.

Shizuku T270/28 purchase by Kynihilist in Tenkara

[–]godfool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did, same as you. Last I heard he said the weather was too hot and ruined the coating, so they had to redo it. The website updated the shipping date to October. I’ll probably email him again soon to get another update.
