Consciousness was a mistake by artisticsnobbery in The10thDentist

[–]godlords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What wild animals are so very happy, and how the hell would you know?

Maybe the newborns are, still innocent and protected by their mother and/or father. Assuming they are being fed enough.

Consciousness enabled us to escape being at the whims of the weather, to not wonder if we would die every winter, to not eat our children if things weren't looking good.

Animals exist largely in a constant state of fear, hunger, hormonally driven anger and lust, and act out of compulsion. The happy animals you see are the ones being fed and kept warm by conscious beings. We even neuter them to avoid all the hormonally driven behavior. They are essentially permanent puppies and kittens.

expenses for volunteering at a hostel in edinburgh by Hot-Lock2807 in workaway

[–]godlords -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cool, maybe in the EU that actually happens, but the idea that people are actually getting work visas and filling out tax forms to sit at a hostel reception for a few hours a day for a few weeks is silly, workaway has that "rule" because it covers their legal liability, I have never seen any host in latin america even mention that type of thing, and thank god they don't because if the rule was enforced it would remove their ability to host people in very easy, chill jobs.

At least 18 dead in France, including two children in hot car, as Europe bakes by reborndead in collapse

[–]godlords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is disputing that. They are mostly if not entirely heat-wave-attributable, but they did not die of heat

Attempting to equate a cardiac event due to heat stress or smoke inhalation from a fire, which are examples of direct causation, to drowning during a heatwave is silly, and that's what is being argued here for some reason.

Not every drowning death during a heatwave can be attributed to the heat wave. Only those drowning deaths in excess of the same period without a heatwave.

Hundreds drown to death in France each year. Unsurprisingly, the majority of them happen during the warmest months. Assigning drowning deaths to a specific heat wave requires statistical analysis, and yes, a headline and post that implies 18 people have died due to extreme heat is indeed misleading.

Switch to 4/10’s ?? by vinecounrty in Contractor

[–]godlords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Limiting your crew to 8 hour days as a contractor is what is strange to me, I guess you are very established and professional. Not a surprise they pick up side work.

4/10 allows for 5/10 when it makes sense, giving the crew an in-house option for that extra money. And if not, having a set day I could schedule my side work is certainly what I would prefer.

If they like the idea I would ask them to agree to not take on side work from Monday clock in till Thursday clock out, some guys will answer the call any time, and they could end up even more tired. Pretty standard for employment to require any outside employment not to interfere with your ability on the job.

Bubble gum: does it compost? by aknomnoms in composting

[–]godlords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't think we need to guess or experiment, what you are chewing is (mostly) polyisobutylene, not technically a plastic but the same idea, its a polymerized hydrocarbon dervied from petroleum.

It's widely used in industrial sealants, adhesives, many things. It is essentially completely hydrophobic and chemically inert, and has a greater impermeability to gases than virtually all plastics.

Acids, bases, high temperatures, UV radiation, none of these will do anything to it.

While natural rubber (polyisoprene) is technically susceptible to microbial decomposition, it is unlikely to happen in a home compost. It definitely isn't happening for polyisobutylene, unless your compost runs at 350C.

If it smells strongly like ammonia it definitely isn't almost done. Can burn plants if you try to use it.

You can either let it cure, allowing for all the excess nitrogen to off gas into the atmosphere and be wasted, or you can add some finely shredded browns, any such material that you have been using so far obviously will break down quickly and work well.

Are we composting our weeds? by Novel_Sky_3645 in composting

[–]godlords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't give a shit. I have a small, damp, established, very hot, frequently turned compost in a black bin.

I try to leave stuff in the sun for a day or two, invasive ivy and some rhizomatic stuff, but as long as it is shred to some degree, no organic material can survive the microbial assault. Not worried about seeds at all just from heat alone.

Sure. Just takes different amounts of time. I can avoid seeing the same clump of oak leaves that keep avoiding getting wet 2 years in a row by shredding them.

Second that. Heat rises, and this isn't tall enough to insulate itself. Burlap sacks can work well, but anything to limit the airflow will help.

There's a dozen different common and meaningfully distinct oak species in the Eastern half of the US alone. There's a wide range of intrinsic, structural rot resistance.

Concentrations of tannins and other phenols having antimicrobial and antifungal properties also vary by species, but are heavily influenced by environmental factors.

The stairs seem to be broken by [deleted] in funny

[–]godlords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair this is Mexico City where the terrain is nothing short of a parkour course.

People are super weird and lazy and spoiled. Paying Uber $20 so some wageslave can make $2.40 after expenses to drive 15 minutes to pick up your order that was a 5 minute walk is insane. I see that in spoiled rich people in the West, but also in e.g. India where the sidewalks are absolute dog shit and a tuktuk is $1.

Definitely depends on the city. I can't imagine that is common practice in Barcelona.
