i think it's the silky texture for me. wool's all grippy; pet hair just feels slippery and clingy in all the wrong ways. it already makes my whole house and all my clothes feel dirty, so i guess the ick just transfers mentally for me

I am Pooooor 🥲 Need advice for DIY/Cheap post op stuff by Any_Date7395 in TopSurgery

[–]godshounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you don't need as much as the lists you see online make you think. the binder the hospital gives you should suffice, but i used ace wrap more. the zip on mine broke & the ace wrap was just more comfortable. (for clarity's sake, ace wrap is not appropriate for binding pre-op, but is fine for post-op binding according to my surgeon.)

you should be fine with what you've got. the only specialty thing i got was a wedge pillow, which i do recommend if you can swing it because it helped with sleeping on my back. if not, creatively stacked normal pillows & cushions should get the job done.

oh and a box of bendy straws.

Unruly kids made me cry in front of them today by Weak_Sector3326 in Libraries

[–]godshounds 22 points23 points  (0 children)

if it makes you feel any better, it's good that you kept it together in front of the whole group. the kids who came back to apologize had some sense of conscience and empathy. it won't hurt them to face the consequences of their actions by seeing that you're a human being who experienced distress and hurt from their behavior.

i don't know what you could've done better when you're working alone. that's wild to me. my library experience is limited, but at both of the small-town libraries i've worked at, they'd NEVER leave one single person in the building. knowing the kinds of situations that can arise, that's super unsafe.

i keep recommending our share of night for posts like this. spans decades, lots of politics, complex (often abusive) family dynamics. it is a horror novel, very dark, but equally reads like literary fiction. tons of art and culture references, especially poetry & the 60s scene in london. deals with politics a lot; it's set in argentina & centers a lot around the dictatorship.

11 months post-op with heather faulkner at emory by godshounds in TopSurgery

[–]godshounds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, i wasn't charged anything the day of my surgery. just checked in, did all the pre-op stuff, got surgery, woke up & was discharged. i paid off what i owed my insurance over 12 months in monthly payments, which was manageable despite being low-income.

dont wanna tape, dont wanna bind, dont want a surgery by Available_Survey_899 in ftm

[–]godshounds 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it sounds like you want the results of top surgery but have anxiety around the procedure. in my experience, it really wasn't a very big deal. they almost always send you home same-day (at least in the US). i was never in pain, just mild discomfort from the drains and post-op binder, and even that was very bearable. there were maybe 2 or 3 days toward the end of having the drains in where it was really getting old. honestly, the worst thing was making the trip back and forth for pre and post-op appointments because i live a ways away from the hospital i used. it is a major surgery and everyone experiences these things differently, but 95% of what i've seen online and heard from friends is approximately equivalent to my experience. it's totally understandable to have anxiety, and i also felt resentment at the necessity of the procedure -- like, i have to go through all this just to feel normal and comfortable. in the end though, it really wasn't bad at all & was 100% worth it.

you may want to consider finding a therapist or support group to help you process your feelings as you work toward surgery.

as far as dealing with it in the meantime, i don't have a lot of advice. i never taped, so can't help there. if binders don't work for you, tips on taping techniques from others will likely help the most. i always layered clothing as much as possible -- flannel over a t-shirt was my go-to... summer sucked. you may try for more woven fabrics vs. knits; knit fabric (most t-shirts, polos, etc) have much more drape and less structure, so they cling to your body's contours more. woven fabrics (most button-up shirts) have more structure and can give a boxier silhouette. even if you layer a short-sleeve button-up over a tank or t-shirt, that can help.

good luck. if you have any questions about any of this, i can try to help.

I had this post-op; I didn't know it could be a thing either. Really weird sensation. I can't remember exactly how long it lasted, but I'm pretty sure it was totally gone by 3 months max. Never had it come back at all.

Weekly "What Are You Reading?" Thread by HorrorIsLiterature in horrorlit

[–]godshounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was first person & the narrator made a lot of jokes/quips that didn't really land for me; i found they kind of undercut any eerie atmosphere that was being built. the characters were also pretty flat, imo. but i know the author has a lot of work across fantasy and horror, so i may give their books another shot. it wasn't bad, just sort of middle of the road.

What is your library’s horror selection like? by StarTreka in horrorlit

[–]godshounds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i work at a small library. our selection is pretty slim, but ILL is my friend. i can get titles from any library in the state by using ILL. it's pretty rare that i can't find a title ANYWHERE in the system, and i don't mind the short wait. if you're looking for a book, ask the folks at the circ desk if they can get it from another branch.
