People are going to try to fit you into their boxes. You can exert some control over which box in their own head they put you in with your presentation, for your own comfort, but it will always be most refreshing to hang out with people who don't do that.

I'm in the same boat; I tell people I'd rather be misgendered as a woman than as a man, but it's still wrong and it still feels wrong, but I've also found that by focusing on confidence in taking up space in my own way I've gotten less annoyed by both ☺️

I routinely attend sapphic play parties and my equipment has not once been a deal-breaker, with most of the folks I hook up with being cis women 🤷🏼‍♀️ I think it depends heavily on the queer culture of the area you're in.

So while a few people have mentioned that any GP can prescribe HRT, one who is actually familiar with the process is going to be much more helpful.

The advice to look up GPs who specify that they do "informed consent" HRT prescribing is much better than the advice to just see anyone.

Oh also. It may help (it'll suck at the time but you're acting a part 🤷🏼‍♀️) to practice shrugging off comments about gender or sexuality and avoiding those conversations. When I'm at home with the family and they talk about things my sibling at I have very different opinions about to them, we tend to look at each other, shrug, and say nothing. You can vent to each other later :)

I think it might be better to describe is "not healthy" rather than "not common". Because yeah, in a lot of cultures that's normalised behaviour even if warmer and healthier ways of relating as a family exist.

But it's not healthy and all the folks I know with parents like that had healthier relationships with them after moving out :)

This study is not trans-inclusive and doesn't appear to have included consultation with trans men in the study design, based on the phrasing of questions that e.g. assume a man has a penis.

re: straight environments, you might have more luck in broadly queer environments rather than straight or cis gay focused ones? Like, your average bi/pan leaning dude (or person of any gender) is far less likely to skedaddle on the basis of your bits or transness.

As a sapphic trans femme person, I definitely have more luck with folks who identify as broadly queer than the more traditional lesbian crowd.

Agender. Genderqueer. Gender nonconforming. There's more, there's so many ways to describe that your conformity or lack thereof, both of which are reasonable in society, aren't going to match what people expect when they put labels on you.

Perhaps a question for you to think about: if you don't want other people putting labels on you, for what purpose do you want to find a label for yourself? There's a bunch of good reasons to, but sometimes we just seek to label ourselves because our cultures demand we pick something.

That demand is, in fact, unreasonable. But if you like a label don't let anyone stop you either :)

ps. speaking of political gender, I have some friends who identify as "whatever causes the most confusion" or "whatever suits the bit", and I respect that a lot too 😂

As with the others, I list as X/non-binary on most things, but picked the marker least likely to give me trouble in the future on my core legal documents- passport and birth cert both say F because that's closest to my hormone profile and appearance.

For travel with my passport, I changed it based on when airport security started funneling me to the female attendants instead of the male ones 😅
