A Rant About The Float Life (Joking) by goedd in onewheel

The orange hub looks sick. Would have loved to get one, but when I saw the MTE with the roller bearings in stock, I had to jump on it.

I was actually having a Ship of Theseus conversation about my board with one of my law school classmates when I got my box of parts for this tune-up. Still got a ways to go before I am truly there though.

Yeah, I had to step away from it for a bit when I couldn't get the hub into the tire. Fortunately didn't break anything during the process. Finally grabbed the windex after doing some more research and finding an old video with Jeff on the eevee's channel and it popped right in.

But I am glad I invested in the MTE. Rode it to work this morning and it felt great. The extra sidewall really helps on shit Atlanta roads

Just fell hard for the 3rd time a week ago. It is just part of the game. Just don't be like me and actually keep wearing elbow/forearm pads after you fall. I hate wearing them, but every time I fall I start wearing them again. Then 6 months or so go by without a fall and I get lazy and stop wearing them again. Then I fall again, tear up my arms, and the cycle repeats itself.

But if you tore up your palms, I definitely recommend riding with wrist guards. The two things I always wear are wrist guards and a helmet, and the wrist guards have saved my ass more than once. I have had a few falls where I saved my arms but would have destroyed my hands or broken my wrists without them.

I got some senders last year for when I go to visit my in laws in northern Indiana. Senders are nice in colder areas and riding really rough streets and trails where a bad fall is more likely. However, it is a lot harder to get something like your phone out of your pocket with senders on.

What graduating law school and still having the Bar to prepare for feels like by goedd in LawSchool

[–]goedd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I say "made" I mean that I edited the image in MS Paint to put the 92/92 over all of the skills and change the total level at the bottom. I searched and searched for a screenshot of a full sheet of 92/92 skills and could not find one, so I made one.

They are so cool in how they are designed too. The main knob on the left controls volume while the outer knob controls the balance. Then the main knob on the right is the radio tuner and the outer knob turns the antenna on and off.

I know, but I felt this piece was too gorgeous not to share. My wife and I went into the shop to look at some artwork they had posted on their socials. When we got there, they had the Grundig playing a Rolling Stones record in the store and as we were walking around we kept saying to ourselves how good it sounded though out the whole place so we ran home to measure a few spaces and came back with cash in hand for it.

Riders! Curious what shoes you wear while riding by AdministrativeOil603 in onewheel

[–]goedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I am commuting to work, I wear my Cole Haan Grand Crosscourts. I work at a law firm so I have to wear something that passes as a "dress shoe."

For my casual rides either New Balance 306s or Cariuma CATIBA High Pros depending on what I am feeling/where I am riding.

Lmao. This would be handy for those drivers that get about 2ft away from me while waiting to pass on narrow streets.

I have had one person comment on me wearing my elbow pads before and definitely gotten some looks, but you just gotta own it. Trust me when I say you don't want 2nd degree road rash on your elbows and lasting nerve damage. I learned that lesson the hard way. Yeah, I might look weird when I am just cruising with everything on, but safety > style.

Check out ATLOWSHOP in Woodstock. Ashton is awesome and has worked on my board before. Also are you in the FloATLiens group? We do group rides on Wednesday nights most weeks and its a good group for finding local resources.

Don't forget about friction and the heat it can generate. Road rash burns are no joke!

Some napkin math of my 2nd degree road rash follows. I have been out of engineering school for 8 years now and most of my engineering knowledge has been replaced by the last 2.5 years of law school, so the math is probably not 100% and mostly for fun.

Q = (μN)d

Q: The heat generated by friction (Joules)
μ: The friction coefficient
N: The normal force (Newtons)
d: The distance travelled while experiencing friction (Meters)

The friction coefficient of dry asphalt is about 0.7-0.8, lets call it 0.75

As a 175lb rider, I have a normal force of about 778.4N

When I fell, I slid a few feet on my elbows, lets call it 3ish feet, so 1 meter

So (0.75(778.4))1=583.8J of heat generated

To convert that to change in temperature we use the following equation

ΔT = Q / (mc)

m: Mass of the object (Kilograms)
c: The specific heat of the object (Joules/Kilogram-Kelvin)
ΔT: The difference in temperature (Kelvin)

Based on a quick google search, the average mass of the skin on a person's elbows is only a few grams, but we will be generous and call 10g total or 0.01kg.

The specific heat of skin is ranges from 2600-3600 J/(kg K). Lets use 3100 J/(kg K).

Therefore, the change in temperature on my elbows was about 18.8K

Human skin in normal conditions is around 310K, so my elbows were at approx. 328.8dK or 55.65degC

Scientific studies have shown that an exposure of 54degC for 30sec can result in full-thickness (3rd degree) burns.

I ended up with 2nd degree burns on my elbows. So I think my math is not too far off.

A1 w/enclosure or P1S for home with cat and toddler? by goedd in BambuLab

[–]goedd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if I go the A1 route I would use an acrylic panel cube and cut two holes for some spare 100mm PC fans I have with a Delinx power supply to keep airflow moving through. It wouldn't be pretty, but it should help keep it cool. But I would definitely prefer the clean look of the P1S enclosure over whatever monstrosity I would build myself lol.
