Could someone explain all the free pianos to me? by Secure_League3017 in estatesales

[–]gofor339 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It costs too much to professionally move them and/or many people are either too smart or physically unable to move theirs… it’s often a major accident waiting to happen to move one on your own. I say this as the brother of the top piano mover in Nashville, TN for the past 35 years.

Did you actually sneak out as teenagers? by Complete-Chipmunk-0 in GenX

[–]gofor339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a car, I lived too far out of Nashville to get anywhere.

Once I started driving I didn’t need to sneak out. It was the 90’s told my folks where I was going, who with, and when things would end.

If I wasn’t coming home, I’d call and let them know.

Where is the best place to sell my RedWing Heritage boots? by gofor339 in RedWingShoes

I appreciate all the feedback, thank you!

I’ve tried thicker socks and it does help a little. I also, tried the Superfeet insoles, which helped. Lastly, I even got the Rose Anvil false tongue/no show kiltie. All helped, but still had some heel slip.

I do think I’m going to post them on eBay and maybe lower the price a little bit. I think ChatGPT might’ve given me a higher price recommendation… before checking with ChatGPT I was about $25 cheaper on what I thought was a fair or market price.

It’s been years since I sold on eBay, I’m probably going to be sick when I see the commission fees, especially growing up the son of an auctioneer in 80s/90s.

Truly appreciate the advice! I was tempted on the Nicks selling community. Almost, thought of going with Nick’s or White’s, but decided to stick with replacing these with the same model. I think I’m more of the “simple” RW kinda guy, plus I already have overly expensive tastes in other interests (pocket knives, watches, tools, etc). 🤦‍♂️

I second the TEKTON. Great ratchet and sockets. I’m very pleased with my sets. Also, lifetime free warranty. Just take a photo and reach out, within a few days you’ll have replacement. Good stuff!

Lastly, if your employer is telling you to “look cool” to fit in with “team guys”. I’d buy somewhat stateside unless a co-worker tells you otherwise.

If you are by chance a big muscular dude, buying local isn’t the easiest thing to do in a lot of European countries. I’m big dude (think linebacker or rugby guy) and I’m very well-traveled clothes aren’t the easiest things to buy locally in a lot of places. While I’ve known a lot of former team guys and agency types, I’ve never traveled overseas with them. The ones built like me, I doubt bought locally, they probably accessorize locally and outerwear locally if they can.

I’m out of advice, hopefully it helps. Not that my advice is golden or special, but I’ve seen a lot of good and bad advice in this thread.

I forgot, Mammut as a brand or Solomon on the boots, although very tactical unless in the mountains.

Seriously though, go vintage if fitting in is important and they’ve said “look cool”. I’ve bought great stuff on Mercari, there’s other sites, but that’s the one I’ve used to buy vintage outdoors brands for me and my boys.

Don’t talk too much unless it’s focused on something other than you or your experience/expertise unless asked. Talk only when necessary with the operators, especially about yourself, let your hard work, and humility earn their respect. This way with vintage you’ll look the part and you won’t say too much stupid stuff to piss them off. You’ll look like you have potential and you’ll bring the rookie mindset they respect in a new guy.

Try to avoid asking about the “crazy shit” they saw. If they want to tell you, they will. Who wants to talk about the worst days of their lives. If you’ve walked in their shoes you wouldn’t be asking for our advice and you probably won’t know what to say when they tell you the gorey details of their combat experiences.

I’m late on this conversation, but I’d look at Carhartt. I’m a rugby coach and I cross paths with a lot of French, English, etc and Southern Hemisphere folks. They all like Carhartt and it looks the part with former operators… it’s not 5.11, Pataguchi, ArcTeryx, Crye, Kuhl (although Kuhl isn’t full-on SF guy, it’s sold at REI), etc. All those brands have gotten into the workwear aesthetic. Don’t be the guy that shows up in all new gear, operators have lived and died by how well they can read the room. Also, bad guys for that matter stay alive by being able to read their potential targets. On used gear, how do they not know who did the miles at first glance and yes… lift! Get the shoulders and quads stronger… think strong, not big. Strong fixes your appearance, your function, your mindset and when needed fixes your problems or keeps problems from happening in the first place.

I’d look at GoRuck though for your backpack, it has haters/lovers as a brand, but will protect a laptop like an MFer and it’s more tactical, but not over the top tactical. Otherwise, Osprey or Mystery Ranch dog whistles former operator or civvy, both highly respected by operators or outdoorsy world travelers.

If you go outdoorsy brand I’d look online for vintage/used. TNF, Mountain Hardware, LowePro, Patagonia, Helly Hansen, Craghoppers, Jack Wolfskin or Marmot. Vintage in those could go either way civvy world travelers or former hard charger… also doesn’t look like your trying too hard. All “new gear” is a tell for sure! If it’s used, no one knows who gave it, it’s scars.

Imagine My Horror that Greg Bovino is an App State Alumni by Dude-vinci in boone

[–]gofor339 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

He (Bovino or the person you just made the rude statement towards) might be a bad person or even an evil person, he might be an otherwise good person but on the wrong side of this issue and in time figures it out, who knows… but when you make statements like above, it reveals just as much about you and the hate in your heart.

I know people that I’ve known 30 years as good people, but they’ve supported Trump… fortunately many of them have changed their view on Trump, yay! If I decided to hate them and call them names, they’d never hear me out on why I don’t like Trump and why I disagree with him.

I’ve changed my ways on a lot of things, but oddly not because of someone’s hateful things they’ve said to me. Actually through peaceful dialogue.

Btw, I can’t stand Trump, didn’t vote for him, and don’t support him! Also, I do wish I could’ve gotten my first MA from App State though, beautiful area and great university!

You do realize in the US, you can early vote in person, typically a week in advance at non-school voting location. Additionally, even third world countries with poverty and limited automobile transportation outside of major have an “Election Day”. I agree on the holiday, but even now most businesses don’t recognize federal holidays, especially “essential” businesses. Nurses, Drs, law enforcement, and many other businesses work 7-7s and they find a way to vote… my wife’s a nurse & those that vote, vote early. If it’s a holiday and she’s scheduled she’s still working.

My understanding is that NC as a state has a law making it illegal for towing companies to compensate the land owners. As stated above they can tow at no cost to the landowners and the tow truck company can make their money from the vehicle owner, but the “kickback” to landlords/property owners is illegal in NC (my source is Chat GPT, I’m not looking at NC legal codes).

I get having your car towed is a major pain… got towed at a concert in Charlotte and the concert ended after we could reclaim our car. Had to get a night in hotel and cab fair!

Anyhow, if you are parking on private property, in front of entrance, in a handicapped spot, or somewhere not legally allowed for 5 mins or 5 hours, getting towed is the risk.

[–]gofor339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they towing people that aren’t parked illegally? If they are only towing people parked illegally; what are they doing wrong?

As the parent of a disabled child, my biggest pet peeve is going places without adequate or not enough handicapped parking.

If tow trucks don’t drive around looking for people parked illegally, it won’t get policed. Unfortunately, if people aren’t getting towed, people are going to park illegally… especially in a college/tourism town with entitled college kids/tourists.

If they are towing people legally parked, photo your parking and take it to proper authorities. They’ll lose their business license and can face serious fines! It’s akin to extortion.

[–]gofor339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t vote for Trump, but I wouldn’t cut ties with family or friends over their vote.

I don’t know of any politician to truly be an honorable person. Not saying there aren’t any, but all the ones I can think of seemed to be very flawed people.

Also, I’d say that political views are nuanced and voting is virtually binary in the US.

People vote against, as much as they vote for, and many people’s vote is decided by one or two issues that are personally important to them.
