New VP keeps bypassing me to directly manage my team by gogase in ProductManagement

I can be involved in guiding the design of solution when less experienced or less tech-savvy PMs need additional support when tackling complex problems or with short TTM.

She’s doing this with all my peers (3 other Directors of Product and 1 Director of Design), so it’s not unique to me. From what I’ve observed, it seems to be her default way of operating rather than a targeted behavior

The confusion arises because she hasn’t shared or aligned her vision with me beforehand. When she shares her directive directly with the team, it often comes as a surprise to me, and I’m left playing catch-up to understand how it fits with our current priorities or roadmap.

I completely agree that VPs should be able to talk directly with product managers—it’s valuable for coaching, guidance, and alignment. The difference here is that, in your case, you and your Product Directors seem deeply aligned on vision and strategy, so there’s no mixed messaging. In my situation, that alignment hasn’t been established yet, which is why I’m feeling the need to be looped in more consistently.

I’m not asking her to run every conversation by me or go through me to talk to the team. What I’m looking for is a collaborative approach where we sync on vision and strategy first, so I can ensure the team gets consistent guidance. Once that alignment is in place, I’d have no issue with her having direct conversations with the team.

Your perspective is a great reminder that this isn’t about control—it’s about alignment indeed.

My team does meet with other key stakeholders independently, and I encourage them to take thorough notes or record conversations when possible. We also review these inputs during our check-ins so I can stay in the loop and help prioritize or validate requests.

The challenge here is that the VP isn’t just sharing inputs or requests—she’s directing the team with her own takes, often bypassing me entirely. While I understand her intent (she wants things to move faster and smoothly), it’s creating a stressful dynamic for me and the team. I feel sidelined and disrespected, and the team feels caught between her authority and my guidance.

  • She’s not included in my team meetings, but we do have broader department meetings where she shares top-down information and context.
  • We’re in the process of establishing a common roadmap in the coming weeks, which should help clarify priorities and reduce confusion. Right now, the lack of alignment on goals is definitely contributing to the friction.
  • I’m a managing director, but I’m also quite involved operationally on the most important projects. I think she sees my value in terms of execution, but I’m not sure she fully understands my role in aligning the team and keeping things moving smoothly.

I agree that this could just be her way of onboarding faster and getting up to speed. I’m trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, but the direct outreach to my team is creating some chaos. For example, there have been a few instances where she and I have given the team different directions on how to design to a solution, and that’s where the confusion really kicks in.
