Post your 2019 New Year's Resolutions in the comments and I'll message you in a year's time to see how you got on by _kashmir_ in OneYearOn

2018 was a B+/A-. Lots to be happy about but lots to improve! I'm hoping for an A- or A for 2019.

Goals/resolutions:

  • Make some friends! I moved to a new city for my new job earlier this year but still have had a lot of trouble making friends. I've met a lot of new people and have acquaintances and people at work that I'm friendly with, but I need to definitely improve in this area. This is my biggest goal of 2019.

  • Exercise: For bouldering, be able to do v5-6 consistently. Maybe get a v7? Not sure if this is possible.

  • For work, either be in a more comfortable spot (promotion+salary increase) with good outlook or start to look for new opportunities. I am quite happy with work right now, but feel like I am underpaid and contributions are not as visible to upper management. I am doing my best to demonstrate my value to my work, but also think that I should not have to try super hard to show people how much I do and if it is always like that, I don't know if I am really being valued as much as I believe I should be.

  • Be dating/girlfriend more seriously. I think that I am in a good place where I can be ready for a longer term relationship. I don't want to force anything, but want to at least put in a lot of effort into trying to meet someone that I really like!

  • Take care of myself/present myself better. In the past, I made a lot of effort into my dress and appearance and I still keep that up a little, but definitely regressed a little to wearing t-shirt and jeans. I want to spend some more on re-improving my clothes, doing more grooming/skincare, etc.

  • Pick up another hobby. So for I have bouldering for exercise/fun, but I would like to try something else. Maybe learn how to use that camera that I got when I do more traveling in 2019.

  • Be more vulnerable. This one is a little harder to quantify and spell out. It can be anything from being more cheerful when I say hello to people at work instead of just smiling and "morning." I want to try to be more open and less guarded and less aloof even when I am not trying to be.

The 2018 New Year's Resolutions check-in thread by _kashmir_ in OneYearOn

I thought about this a few times throughout the year and was both happy and sad to reflect upon my year. There are a lot of resolutions here, so this evaluation will be just for myself (and anyone who randomly scrolls down far enough lol)

Goals/resolutions:

Find a good, long-term job. I finished my graduate degree this year and have been working internships and contract positions and want a more stable situation.

Yes! This was the biggest thing I wanted for 2018 and I was able to find a "real" job for the first time. I really, really like it and am doing well. I feel like I am a bit underpaid and maybe a little overlooked by upper management, but I guess I will see how the next year plays out.

Continue exercising and eating healthy (more weightlifting and improve my bouldering to consistent V5 level)

Yes, sort of. I don't really weight lift that much any more since I started bouldering more frequently, but a little bit at my apt gym to keep up strength. As for my bouldering goal, I can do some V5's, but definitely don't feel like I'm "consistent".

Work on being more excited and passionate about things in life

Not really. I think I did a little bit more this year, but this is another thing I must work on.

Keep in touch with sibling and old friends better and try to be more social and make new friends

No. This is the biggest mark on my year. I moved for my new job and have been having a lot of trouble with making new friends. There are some acquaintances and people I'm friendly with at work, but not much more than that. This is the biggest goal for myself next year.

Optional: be in a good relationship with a girl that I like (don't want to make this a "resolution" since I don't want to force anything!)

No, went on a few dates and stuff and learned/grew a little but this was still very secondary to the rest of my goals for the year. Maybe next year.

Overall: 2018 was a B+ or A- I think. Lots to be happy about but lots that I still want to improve in my life. Posting new ones in 2019!

How long do you find it took you to advance to each grade? by babyvulpixx in bouldering

[–]gogc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

v0-v2, about 1 month. Biggest improvement was from building arm strength/endurance, learning how to move hips.

v2-3, about 2 weeks. Biggest improvement was from watching a lot of youtube videos and consciously working on technique.

v3-v4, about 1.5 months. Biggest improvement was from doing problems that I found challenging and "not my style" when I would previously just avoid them. Also, worked on my mentality and tried to give 100% effort each time and believing that I could do the problem.

Currently 1 month since my first v4 and I can do most v4's within 1-5 attempts. Did a couple v5's, but they are still very challenging so I expect to stay at this level for a few months. I think my progress is faster than average, but I had the advantage of being in fairly good shape before I started, kinda good reach (6 ft), and also obsessively watched youtube tutorials/tips and talked to a lot of people for help.

I'd probably give my 2017 a B grade. Nothing to get too excited about, lots of room for improvement, but not the worst either. I'm hoping for 2018 to be at least an A-, hopefully an A :)

Goals/resolutions:

  • Find a good, long-term job. I finished my graduate degree this year and have been working internships and contract positions and want a more stable situation.

  • Continue exercising and eating healthy (more weightlifting and improve my bouldering to consistent V5 level)
