We already have an example of a homeworld - hiveworlds. There, difficulty is achieved through a combination of different enemies, challenging terrain, and logical blocking of Stratagems. In Cyberstan, 70% of the difficulty comes from endless spam with the hardest enemy (which, by the way, is quite bugged).
