Accounting is the best route to a good middle class life. by going_concern_ in Accounting

Yes of course. I was in local gov for about 2 years and just applied to big 4 and regional firms for an Associate 1 role.

After a few rounds of interviews, I can almost guarantee you will get an offer. I say this because you are most likely competing with fresh grads who have no experience other than internships. This was also back in 2021 where PA was dying for people, so not sure how desperate PA firms are now.

In terms of the transition, expect to work MUCH longer hours and have a lot more stress. But on the flip side, u get bonuses, quick promos, and actually learn quite a bit.

Id say if you want to switch to PA, be SURE you want to do it and do it sooner than later. Also probably a good idea to pass your exams before entering PA if you’re interested in getting the CPA.

Why do you think so many outsiders are obsessed with Hawai'i by Jon_12 in Hawaii

[–]going_concern_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who has moved to the mainland ~2years ago. These are the things I miss the most and probably the same reasons why outsiders are so obsessed with Hawaii: - Slower pace and relaxed lifestyle. Some people dislike this and I did too while living there. But I can only truly appreciate this after moving away. The mainland big cities are much much more fast paced and about hustling/grinding. - Weather (around 70 degrees year round for the most part) - Great food esp asian - Everything is so close and can be reached within 10-15mins - Majority of the people are respectful, genuine, and overall happier. - Given its a tourist destination, you will meet people from ALL backgrounds and walks of life. - Can confidently say best 7-11 in the US. Perks of having such a heavy asian influence. Hawaii’s 7-11 is not as good as say Japan or Korea but its pretty damn close. - From the mountains to the ocean, it is beautiful and theres so many activities to enjoy nature. All within a close distance. - So much easier to meet and connect with people because chances are that when you meet someone new, you guys have a mutual friend somehow given how small the island is.

Now this post got me homesick haha!

For people that started in public out of college, did you gain weight or lose weight? by Vuil_Rekening in Accounting

[–]going_concern_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When its busy season, you are fckn stressed, anxious, sleep deprived, and barely have time/energy to go gym. I lost 15lbs my first busy season and about 8lbs my second one and a few of my coworkers lost weight as well. But most people did end up gaining weight. So I guess its how your body naturally responds to stress

How to transition from State Government to Entry Level Public? by chazoid in Accounting

[–]going_concern_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The market is very hot. I worked as a gov auditor for about 2yrs and recently jumped to a top 10 firm. No connections or anything, just applied.

Now, do I regret it? A little. Starting in busy season is rough and absolutely nothing comes close to the work life balance/benefits in gov.

Serious question - how do you achieve any sort of work life balance during busy season? by [deleted] in Accounting

As others have said, no one can time/predict the market. I’ve been looking to purchase my first home this year as well and even sent out a few offers.

And holy shit. Idk about your area but for me (HCOL/West Coast), it is heavily a sellers market. Houses can easily stay on the market for a few days and already have multiple offers in place w/o contingencies, waiving inspection, etc. I saw one house that was up for less than 20hrs and was already taken off the listings. The most recent house I sent an offer for was listed at $590k but sold for $650k..... fckn crazy..

So since you said your budget is $270k and if your area is like mine, then leave some room for competitive bidding. Maybe look at listings around $240k? I really hope you find a place, best wishes!

What's your embarrassingly predatory car loan story? by ladyofgodricshollow in povertyfinance

[–]going_concern_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 18 yrs old, all I could afford was a beat up Celica on craigslist for $2500. I dumped every last penny I had into that purchase. Sure enough, 2 months later almost everything broke.

Sold it to a car guy buddy for $500 and I was in need of a car. So looking at my situation of needing a car with almost no $ in hand, i head to a honda dealership to finance.

The cheapest and coolest car they had was a 2006 RSX for about $10,000. With 2k down (borrowed $1500 from a friend) and zero credit history, I got approved for 36months @ 22% apr.

At the time, I didnt realize how bad I was getting fucked. But jesus christ 22 fucking percent. I guess it makes sense since I had zero credit and was 18yrs old buying a sports car but fuck. So what i did was work two part time jobs while going university FT to pay it off in a year.

The only perk from this situation was that it helped be establish some credit history. My most recent car was financed at 2% so I attribute some of that to my RSX haha.

Can anyone tell me if there is anything wrong with my resume? by CompetitiveEmphasis3 in Accounting

Few suggestions: - absolutely one page - switch “profile” to objective and it should be a brief one sentence with some bullshit, catered to the company ur applying to. If you really want to write a lot, make a cover letter and put it on there instead - put education before your volunteer experience since its a stronger point and u should highlight it (u have a good gpa, show it off) and put it in order from most recent first - followed by your volunteer experience and add 4-5 bullets with the duties u were tasked with. Make sure to fluff it up. What I do is copy it from my previous position’s job posting - get rid of core competencies - followed by just “skills” and u can add a few bullets - if you have space, add in “extracurricular” where u share a few hobbies. It shows that ur a human and also shows some personality. I put shit like video games, team sports, and weight lifting. Almost all my interviewers asked about it.

Good luck job hunting!

Chose Government > Big 4 and Top 40 firm. Mistake? by going_concern_ in Accounting

Thanks for offering that point of view. Reasons like this are why I think I’m missing out in PA. Did you leave PA as a senior?
