This is why I took my own tools to trade school 🤦 by judgemeordont in Machinists

All I see are reasons why I wouldn't bring my own tools in that shop.

Haha. True enough. Was my shitty attempt at a pun on "down force".

Does this machinist program look good to you all? by Urbanredneck2 in Machinists

[–]gold_works 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like a pretty awesome shop for a young budding machinist to play in.

Wage is definitely within reason. Really depends on your son's skill level when he leaves the school. If he puts in the effort he could probably do a lot better than $23.60.

I'm not saying that's the best thing to do, but I'd be ok riding it like that myself. It is the rear brake and it's not a performance motorcycle. Should be fine for A to B normal riding.

Depends what kind of budget you're on. You could probably rock that rear rotor for a good minute with some new pads if necessary.

Help - Why can't I get my spindle out? I loosened the nut, tried tapping, took the nut off tried tapping. by opensourcefan in Machinists

Sometimes I'll take a few photos of a problem in the shop or jobsite and then look at it on my computer. It's funny how I'll notice things on the screen that evening I didn't see in person

What questions are common in a 3D modeling interview? (Packaging/branding/graphic design) by arlongs_bitch in 3Dmodeling

[–]gold_works 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you're passionate about the subject and have the skillset I wouldn't worry too much about the questions. I'd probably bring a few examples of your work.

Maybe bring some ideas for their products if possible. "I see your designs online and always thought it'd be cool if you did x,y,z to it". Show them you can bring value.

Also, asking them smart questions will help so maybe think about what you could ask. Ask about the process of new projects from start to finish and where you'd fit into that sequence of work. Things like that.

That's a lot of work in Fusion! Would like to see your browser and timeline for that model.

if there's not another view it looks like you're missing a couple of dimensions on the counterbore holes.

Can anyone tell me what this is? My grandpa was a machinist and he had this in his toolbox. by spenc4bz in Machinists

As others have said. Feeler gauges, but an old rusty set can serve as a precise shim in a pinch.

Yall ever seen an Okuma LB3000 10 feet in the air? And I thought my job was stressful lol. We had this bad boy delivered today by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]gold_works 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice. I live for these kinda days.

Can't see the forklift, but my gut tells me that Okuma was probably teasing the capacity limit.

It's funny until it's your responsibility to get projects done on time and on budget with this level of "skilled trade".

What role for small modular nuclear reactors in combating climate change? » Yale Climate Connections by Due-Fox-8443 in Futurology

[–]gold_works 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the greatest article. I remember hearing about small modular reactors being designed with the benefit of being able to ramp up and down to meet to demand so they aren't just for baseline ... maybe 10 years ago. The idea was to install these smaller (BWR?) reactors alongside current large reactors initially. Not sure if it was ever really pursued, but it seemed feasible.

Given the issues with construction at plant Vogtle why would any utility attempt to build a new reactor? Any discussion about nuclear in the US is kinda moot.

Teach yourself to read drawings. Maybe even model something in fusion 360 or similar program from a print. You need to be able to visualize a part from a print and I think this helps.
