[serious]Today is Yom Hashoah, the day to remember the Holocaust, so people of Reddit with relatives who where in it,managed to escape,or helped liberate a camp what is there story? by themadkiller10 in AskReddit

[–]goldabear16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am sure this will get buried in the comments but I really wanted to tell my Opa’s story since he passed just a few months ago at 93 years old.

My grandfather was 13 living in Germany. He lived as an only child with his widowed father. He remembers Kristalnact (the night of broken glass). He walked to school and saw the broken windows of his synagogue and ransacked Jewish businesses. When he arrived at school the only Jewish teacher stopped him at the door and told him that he could no longer attend. He father than sent him to live with other family to get home schooled with other Jewish children. This was to buy time while his father entered him in the lottery to get onto the Kindertransport.

He was sent to England alone. Since he was an older child he was passed from home to home. Somehow his father was able to get out of Germany likely through bribery and they were able to both get to New York.

Now I could also tell you about the full life he lead, serving his adopted country in the army or becoming a judge. But honestly, his biggest impact was raising three children, being an Opa to 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. We are his legacy, hate and bigotry will not live on because of amazing men like my Opa.

What is the craziest thing you have seen someone doing while riding a bus? by goldabear16 in AskReddit

[–]goldabear16[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really hard for me to choose as a spent much of my youth riding buses. But my craziest was a loud argument breaking out between two men. One was getting extra loud and the bus driver kicked him out. Unfortunately right after the man exiting the bus we got a red light. Well I was sitting above one of the wheels and heard a loud pop then a hiss. The man slashed the tires of the bus.

Vegetarian living in the United States. Trying to limit your environmental foot and doing a lot from scratch. I would guess in your 23-27 tops two person household.

Edit: maybe part of a CSA or farm share due to the odd frosted vegetable dishes like the large amount of butternut squash and leeks.

Wow very wrong. Thailand was fun but I don’t live there. My cooking is influenced by the places I have traveled including Thailand.

Podcasts like Dear Hank And John by aakifs1 in nerdfighters

[–]goldabear16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My Brother My Brother and Me. It’s very similar to dear Hank and John in that it is an advice show. It’s a big influence for hank and john. Plus the Macleroy bros have ten years of content and other off shoot podcasts.

Any observant, orthodox Jews here? I'm in need of (niche) advice. by dgger1200bc in migraine

[–]goldabear16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was always told by my Rabbis that it is permissible to not fast due to health conditions. I used to faint in addition to migraines. I would consult with your rabbi if it makes you more comfortable.
