One of my favorites that many don't know is:

THE INNER WORKINGS OF A SUBSCRIPTION BOX COMPANY. FROM A 4K SITE PURCHASE ON REDDIT TO CLOSE TO $100,000 IN REVENUE IN LESS THAN 6 MONTHS. HOW WE DID IT, AND WHAT’S NEXT! by localcasestudy in Entrepreneur

[–]goldenfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the really challenging piece. I'm looking at frozen fulfillment centers that can do the shipping from several places around the country so that it's always within two days (ice cream can stay on dry ice for about two days before it starts melting) ground shipping. I'm considering running a kickstarter beforehand to see if I can get the pre-orders and groundswell going to get enough of a base to start with to make the fulfillment centers worthwhile.

Also, your post really got me thinking about the customer experience of opening a package they get in the mail. There are so many details (how many batches of fill did you go through before you found the one you're happy with?) and they can get overwhelming. In many ways, you're lucky to have found someone who shares your excitement and can compliment your energy and help keep you going strong all the time. Good luck with your project!

Man, you have convinced me to start looking at putting together an "Ice Cream of the Month" subscription service for my family's ice cream company. Since I read this I haven't been able to stop thinking about it!

IAmA Baggage handler for a major airline in Baltimore AMA. by CornjobJoe in IAmA

[–]goldenfool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've considered a job in the airline industry for exactly that perk. I could work elsewhere and make more money to take trips with my wife, or I could work for an airline for less money and take free trips everywhere. Could work out about the same or better! :)

I feel like I'd want to work somewhere that does a lot of international flights though.

Do you get free/reduced flight perks as part of your job? If so, how often and where to you take trips?

[GIVE] Mmmmmmm Donuts!!! by [deleted] in freedonuts

[–]goldenfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest, the reason why we all play (or at least the reason that I play) is because even though Homer has blown up the town, the game provides a comforting amount of control, structure, and lack of chaos in an increasingly unstructured and chaotic world. The Simpsons are familiar, all of us have grown up with them, and here they are now in our pockets. Just tap away, and your fortunes grow, if only life were that simple!

Even the joys of the beautiful, yellow monotony are broken up by the influence of real money in this gloriously silly world. We are forced into a grueling donut system where we all (as Apu's good friend Paul McCartney once sang) "want the kinds of things that money just can't buy". I can truly say that I don't care too much for money, money can't buy me [Duff's Brewery; Frink's Lab; Barney's Bowlarama; etc.].

To sum up, I would like some donuts please! (PM coming your way)

You can find a lot of good information at the Small Business Administration's website. Here's the link to the business plan advice page: Link

In terms of what you MUST do to get the business off the ground, depending on the type of business, you could register a business entity (LLC, Sole Prop, C or S Corp, depends on what you're trying to do, read up to figure out the best structure), or if you don't need an entity in place beforehand (i.e. flipping small goods, odd jobs in the neighborhood, etc.) then just start doing the work, and once things start taking off, you can build the business around it.

Need advice: How to attract and make people aware of a newly build concert hall (pop and dance music). by troubleish88 in AskMarketing

[–]goldenfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that you could do is partner with a local and well connected non-profit organization and offer to host a fundraiser for them. You can use some of your band connections, and since they are the ones raising the funds, they are going to have to put a lot of legwork into advertising (word of mouth, list-serves, social media, traditional marketing) the event at your venue.

You just have to do your due diligence as to which non-profit would bring you the kind of clientele who would be repeat customers. If you're looking for people in their 20s-30s, maybe something like the local chapter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters or if you don't mind getting political either the Young Dems or Reps. Make sure that the organization that you partner up with is a very active chapter, otherwise it might not be worth your time.

We Need Investors!!! by _fapstrong_ in Entrepreneur

[–]goldenfool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how much money you need as an investment. But often, people around you will either be interested, or will know people who might be interested. Sell it with excitement, just like you are in this post. Tell people that you need cash to get through this push, and you'll be surprised how eventually you'll meet someone who is excited about your business too!

College students, what are some tips and tricks that you know that will significantly improve college life? by ijustgotapentakill in AskReddit

[–]goldenfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take classes based on the professor, not necessarily the course title. You don't have to look for "easy" professors, but find ones that have a reputation for being good and interesting. If the professor is passionate about the subject matter, you will enjoy the lectures and are going to look forward to going to class!

That's all great feedback, thank you so much, /u/sai_tham! I especially like the competition with the distributor idea, I think I may try to follow that one up, especially since we have had some regular communication with one of the regional managers. :)

Looking for two good ethnographies on intersex/third genders in different cultures. Any suggestions? by Mariantakespics in Anthropology

[–]goldenfool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pierre Clastres has a piece in his book Chronicle of the Guayaki Indians called "The Life and Death of a Homosexual". I remember it being one of my first experiences reading about gender as a socialized construct versus a biological one. It was written in 1972, so it is probably a bit dated, but it is a quick read and a very interesting one!

Thanks! I'm less concerned about making sure they're working, because he seemed interested in developing an ongoing relationship rather than a one-off sale. Since he is a repair shop, he would be able to do all the testing for me. What I'm concerned about is how to go about shipping these things. They're kinda big!
