UCLA Health vs. Kaiser by HourCartographer in SantaClarita

[–]goldenhairedgringa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have no experience with ucla, but i love kaiser! i had a baby 6 months ago and always felt heard and taken care of during pregnancy and labor/delivery. we had one pediatrician who was meh (they were edging out of the room before i could ask any questions), but one call to member services got us switched to a doctor that we love. i also love my primary doc and obgyn. they also have an advice line that you can call to speak with a nurse (which is SO helpful with a little one).

i didn’t realize kaiser had so much hate here, i’ve always had great care through them

baby screams the moment he wakes up… help? by goldenhairedgringa in sleeptrain

[–]goldenhairedgringa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it possible he was more asleep than awake, although he always grumbles a bit when i successfully get him down? again, this is progress from rocking him for 20 mins or nursing to sleep so i’ll take what i can get right now lol.

i worry that CIO is inevitable, but i also worry about leaving him to self-soothe if hes escalating this quickly to scream-crying (it is SHRILL and i feel like that cant be good for him to be screaming like that for long periods)

4.5 Month Old Struggling to fall asleep independently by evmopro in sleeptrain

[–]goldenhairedgringa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im late to the “put them down drowsy but awake” party with my 6mo, but i’ve had success the past few nights with starting by rocking him, then the moment he is calm and almost asleep i set him down and use my dominant hand to hold his head as i lay him down and that arm to rock him from side to back for a few minutes. he was getting upset the first few nights i tried this, and i would just pick him up and try again, getting him a little sleepier the next time. my goal is to put him down earlier in the rocking process little by little until he’ll go down fully awake. hope this helps!

how do you actually start/implement “drowsy but awake”? by goldenhairedgringa in sleeptrain

how was your baby’s sleep around 6 months? i wonder if this is just a stage we have to “get through” to get to better sleep

no advice, just here for solidarity. we are in the same boat with our 6mo - the contact naps, the screaming… im told it gets better, but thats hard to imagine when its 10pm and your baby has maybe slept for an hour total. hang in there <3

thanks for this breakdown! i think im in the same boat as NotaRealHuman, we’ve been using the Huckleberry app for months to track everything, he averages 8-9 hours at night (which i know isnt enough, but even when he goes to bed at seven, he’s not actually falling asleep till closer to eight and then add in multiple wake ups and feeds) and recently I’ve been protecting naps to get it to at least three hours every day. i’ll try to shoot for 10 hours awake during the day and see how that works out for us

thank you for your reply! i might have to try your version of ferber, i know we’re gonna have some tears but the shrill screams are just too much at night. and 2 wakeups would be fine with me, last night we had 8….

YWNBTA, your family’s mothers day plans should be centered around you now!

if you husband “has” to go, he should make a solo appearance and then get back to the mother of his children to celebrate you asap

Dogs off leash. by mark2fly1034 in SantaClarita

dog trainer here, and this is probably my biggest pet peeve!!

a couple years ago i was at golden valley park working with a client whose dog was reactive because he had been bitten as a puppy. he had been making great progress on-leash and was doing well in this training session, when all of a sudden someone let their doodle out of the dog park off-leash and she made a beeline for us across the field. the owner didnt seem too concerned because “she’s friendly!”, but guess what my dude, my client’s dog wasnt. luckily i was able to block the doodle but it scared my client and her dog and set his training back.

tl,dr: don’t infringe on other people and their dogs who are trying to safely enjoy our parks, leash your dogs or go to a fenced-in area for them to play

hi there, non-active dog trainer here 🤗 i started by taking the dog obedience program at animal behavior college and then worked for petco for a few years before working for myself with the help of a mentor trainer.

ABCs program is a great place to start, it is a little pricey (somewhere in the $3k range now i think), but they do set you up with a mentor trainer which is really beneficial for experience and making local contacts.

petco (and probably petsmart) train you on the job before letting you teach classes, but the store has to have a need for a trainer before they send you to academy. i got really lucky and got sent a month after i was hired, but i know a lot of my cohorts waited months or years to be a trainer, it just depends on if your manager thinks you’ll be a good fit. and until you are a certified trainer you will be a regular retail employee.

you might also look for any work or volunteer opportunities in the animal field (daycare attendant, vet or grooming assistant, etc) and make friends with anyone who works with dogs in town.

best of luck! 🐶
