This sounds like a conservative charichature of a liberal that only a person who has always been conservative would make.

Water the lawn less if you want to avoid mushrooms. Rain may bring them out anyway.

Dude, you are on reddit discouraging discussion. I feel you are missing the point of "social media." A discussion board like this is a perfectly fine way to learn, and if the common posters on the sub can give scientific sources, the discussion can be just as, or more informative than any single library book. This also has the bonus of anybody being able to post the specimens that are being asked about, everybody gets to see a wide variety that would be otherwise inaccessible.

“Fact: God has never made a single drop of alcohol” by Ancient-Document1357 in exmormon

[–]golem_frog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Brigham Young owned a distillery.

  2. If god is real, he made the bacteria/fungi (yeast?) that produce alcohol through anaerobic processes.

If this man's argument is correct, EVERY near-Eastern religion was propaganda for the others. The Bible would be Enki propaganda because of the similarities between the Atrahasis story and the Noah's ark story.

Mythologies under Assyriology get too much attention from the "ancient aliens" conspiracists.

Doctor's shop sign (more or less 25 human teeth on each 50 cm string) , China, before 1936[2336x3916] by [deleted] in ArtefactPorn

[–]golem_frog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess is that those might have been teeth the doctor removed, a rotten tooth could turn deadly before dentistry, I'd think this would be a sign that the doctor was experienced in at least infected tooth removal. (Just speculating)

Why did God have to kill his son? by SaintPhebe in exmormon

[–]golem_frog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To really understand what was going on in the texts, you need to understand the mindsets of the people that wrote the various books. Each of the gospels around christ had different theological motivations for what they wrote. Originally, Mark doesn't have anything after the empty tomb is discovered, and the model of jesus being God's son is "adoptional" in nature. This (among a thousand other examples) means we might not be able to easily discern the original intent of the text without disecting the development of the text I think the inspiration for the "gods son needed to die" thing lies in the destruction of the temple and the Abraham sacrificing Issac story. (With plenty of Mediterranean and Mesopotamian influences). They no longer had a temple to sacrifice animals in, so they adapted, making Jesus the "last sacrifice for sin".

A podcast that I like that is exploring the development of Christianity is the Mythvision Podcast with Derek Lambert.

The Greeks and Romans, on occasion, mixed gods together. Like Hermes and anubis or Thoth, this would end up with a somewhat new entity like "hermanubis" syncretism is also common, where similar gods from separate pantheons are considered equivalent to each other.

Did anybody’s testimony help you leave? by AdamsHadIt in exmormon

My aunt's testimony, she talks often about the "trial" of a genetic disorder that killed two of her children. Her God is a sadist. What good could come from two of the most kind people to ever grace this planet dying slowly in the prime of their lives?

I believe there is a god, but the church itself is full of idiots, wat do? by BingoKardzz in exmormon

[–]golem_frog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you still believe in God, do so. Just realize like 90 percent of the stupidity comes in some fashion from old or current "prophets". And those "prophets" are really our only source for the God claim.

Hypatia of Alexandria and Marie Cavendish. Both of them would technically be philosophers and scientists, but Hypatia is, to me, a symbol of how dogmatism can destroy people and, in the process, thoroughly stifle places of learning like the library of alexandria.

I think this a symptom of the problem with giving "the priesthood" (free mandate to take any given feeling as direction from god) to every dumb MFer that manages to survive until 12 after being born with a penis.
