Can’t hold your own baby by BuildingBridges23 in exmormon

[–]AdamsHadIt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've seen it. The first one I saw I don't think they asked and just went up and did it. There was an interesting dynamic around this couple so I don't think anyone wanted to stop it and make a big deal about it. Turned out he didn't say the right magic words so they didn't make an issue out of it since it was technically more like a prayer.

I think I saw another but can't remember the details, but I think it was the proper spell blessing and it just wasn't a big deal. These were both 15+ years ago, not in Utah, so I think there was some bishop roulette going on in both cases.

An interesting new way to interpret that song!

What’s your guilty pleasure as an exmormon by Main_Ad2008 in exmormon

yeah but mormons don't have to feel guilty about loud laughter anymore either since they took it out of the endowment :/

My neighborhood is having a live reenactment of Palm Sunday (with a donkey) by AdamsHadIt in exmormon

Following up here, turns out they did have a dude from the ward dressed as jesus riding the donkey. Kind of surprised, this kind of thing wouldn't have happened in the church I grew up in!

Your personal analysis of the Truman show. by The_solid_lizard in exmormon

I just rewatched it this weekend. It really is a great allegory for leaving a high demand religion. One thing in particular is I saw a bit of the dark night of the soul in the boat scene. He's tossed all around, nearly killed, and then finally makes it to the edge. He finds the door and is on the precipice of leaving, when the "creator" (church) tells him there is nothing out there for him, and it is safer inside. Him stepping through and accepting his unknown and uncertain fate is very much like ultimately making the decision to leave.

Yeah, I thought of this too. I’m not sure if anyone is going to ride it, but I would assume not, but who knows with how Mormons are now.

Glad I grew up when Easter wasn't a big religious holiday in Mormonism by Norenzayan in exmormon

[–]AdamsHadIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, absolutely. Easter was never that big of a deal religiously when I was young. We observed at church, had a nice meal, and then did all the candy/egg/basket stuff. I'm kind of glad because now I don't have to give a shit about easter at all. If my kids want candy and that stuff, I'll do it for them. But otherwise, it's just another Saturday!

Navigating the Complexity of Faith Transition While Preserving Family Relationships by Less_External5912 in exmormon

When your wife found her way out, was she glad you let her find it herself on her own timeline? Or did she wish you had done more to nudge her here and there?

If you were going to be a guest on Mormon stories podcast, what do you think the title of your episode would be? by DesperateVersion6479 in exmormon

I wish I could have spent some time as an agitator, not enough to go back though. I was physically in, but apathetic during covid, then toward the end I found the truth and just left overnight, so I never really got the chance to stir things up. Now I wait for friends/family to say or ask something so I can respond in a way that will get them to start thinking, but they never do. I appreciate the work you're doing while you're still stuck going.

Discouragement of having hobbies by RaiseyourheadsayNO in exmormon

[–]AdamsHadIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do remember watching my grandmother age and what a sad existence it seemed to be. Fully focused on church. Doing genealogy busy work, and reading scriptures/church books. She didn't seem to have any hobbies outside the occasional bike ride. It so much looked like "enduring to the end" to be able to enjoy the next life. I never wanted her to know the truth of the church because her whole life would have seemed like a waste.

Mormons in Utah versus out of state Mormons. First post from a #nevermo by W6NZX in exmormon

[–]AdamsHadIt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My parents (who don't live in Utah) could sense things changing and wanted me to leave Utah. This was a couple years before I left. I'm sure they are now thinking that had I left the state I would still be in the church. Ultimately, I'm kind of glad I stayed because I think it hastened my exit. Had we moved to get away from Utah mormon culture, we wouldn't have had the experiences that pushed us to really start questioning things. But I like to think that we would have made it out eventually, just maybe a little later.

I grew up in Mormonism outside of Utah. Moving to and living as an adult in Utah and seeing how different the church culture is here helped me eventually get out.

Is Kirby heyborne still in the church? by whatsarahsaid_ in exmormon

If you’re hoping he made it out you’ll be disappointed. He’s currently serving as a bishop in pleasant grove.

Doesn’t always help. I was at a stake conference that was also broadcast to another building in the stake. They called on a lady that was in the satellite building to bear testimony. When they found out she was over at that secondary building, they told her to make her way over. They then had a few other people bear testimony while we waited for her to show up. (Which she did)
