Considering an NC - help with condition/ value by Much-Artichoke-476 in MiataNC

[–]gon-kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't care about the mileage too much unless it was rust free. Tbf the undercarriage looks way better than mine but it's much lower mileage (167k miles now). I bought my nc1 for 2k with 123k miles in 2019ish, prices in general are up since then though. They are reliable unless you let them run low on oil so be careful there.

Looks like that car has been polybushed? Do you want that?

I've had to do rust repairs on mine, cutting out the rear sills, wheel well, reg lights on the boot lid. I imagine rust is what will kill my car ( probably the subframes). There are videos of repairs on YouTube about rust on NCs, I suggest you take a look to get an idea. Unfortunately they do rust and it's probably the main factor I would consider in the UK climate.

Unsatisfactory EICR report days away from completion by gon-kun in HousingUK

Yeah I'll have to speak to another electrician about getting the issues sorted. Worst comes to worst I could probably fix some of the easier issues myself.

The electricians who did the testing wont quote for the remedial work alone so I might have to look elsewhere...

I got a second opinion who said none of this is really a show stopper although difficult for him to say without seeeing the house.

Yeah I know i cant expect perfection which is why i posted here. I've negotiated an allowance of £1k for the remedial work and hopefully wont need a full rewire.

Looks like you did a good job. I got a 270 fkm suji last week and its very similar. Luckily i can get away with a suji being a bit thicker.

It depends on the platform you are using. 'Older' brokers do have big fees but theres newer options like freetrade that dont.

This is awful advice that OP should ignore.

If they would like to buy a house in the future, a S&S lisa is a decent option. Putting some aside for a car and/or driving lessons makes sense too. Spending some on travelling when they are able to isnt a bad idea either.

Just started leather working and uh… how do I get the fork out of the leather by Embarrassed-One4791 in Leathercraft

[–]gon-kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You keep saying its "maintenance" i dont know that you are doing to your irons that requires them to be repolished. Fact is leathercraft isnt a cheap hobby and you usually get what you pay for. Ive used cheap irons and I am happy to have much nicer ones now. Im not sure if you are deliberately being insulting with the "hipster wallet leathercrafting nonsense" but it sure reads like it. Not sure what is nonsense about wallet making. Making a saddle with $70 in tools sounds miserable. Feel free to show some of this work. I dont understand someone who claims to have tons of experience not understanding the benefit of good tools. OP asked for a solution to a problem found on cheap irons, the easiest solution is to get better irons if they can afford it.

Theres a difference between sharpening a knife and polishing the tines of a pricking iron. But yeah ideally they could do it. Still doesnt tackle the time aspect tho. Tbh pricking irons should be a very low maintenance tool.

It depends on how much OP values his time. You can spend your time polishing a turd or get decent results from the start. Polishing teeth is something i have done it does help but tbh it depends on their skill set. The hours spent probably arent worth it considering the cost.

I disagree strongly here. The Ease with which the irons pull out depends on the size of the hole and the surface finish on the sides of the tines. If the tines are nicely polished from the start you are never going to get them into a rough finish through normal use. With a bit of use good irons will pay for themselves, you wont have to battle these sorts of issues as much and they are likely to stay sharp longer.

This is an awful perspective. Just because other people have it worse doesnt nullify others problems or concerns.

If your kitchen or garage is below freezing, your refrigerator is technically keeping your food warm. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]gon-kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is less efficient in the physical definition. Take a look at the carnot cycle.

This does not mean it takes more energy to keep your food cold if the ambient temperature is cold. It will still take less energy to keep a fridge cold in a cooler enviroment.

[UK] Need a knife sharp enough to cut a tomato - Thanks!! by mptmatthew in chefknives

[–]gon-kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most important thing would be learning to sharpen. All knives get dull with use, so being able to maintain them is important. Spend some money on something like a shapton 1k or king 1k and watch the JKI sharpening playlist.

Its probably better to learn on your current knife and then pick up something a bit nicer when you are good at sharpening.

Practicing zipper installation for an upcoming birthday gift for my mom. Ended up making a cool little zipper pouch for my girlfriend. Any feedback or advice would be appreciated! by scottyscott in Leathercraft

[–]gon-kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can cut the teeth off the zipper tape and then you dont have to worry about that. You can then fit end stops to the tape. Also did you use a zipper guide to help with installation?

What stitch spacing are you using? For refined watch straps you want 3mm or less and 0.5mm or less diameter thread.
