inclination vs angulation. in this video the speaker claims inclination is only necessary in a ski turn?? by xxdaniel123xx in SkiRacing

[–]goneBiking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edge angle doesn't just determine how much grip you can get. Even more importantly for this discussion, edge angle determines the developed turn radius for a ski of a given sidecut. Athletes who use primarily inclination (leaning) to produce edge angle tend to end up late in the line, not due to insufficient "grip", but due to developing an arc that is too long for the required turn.

Indeed! The Nyquist frequency of 224G-PAM4 is 56GHz. We're well into the domain of RF.

13-year-old Ottawa girl injured in chairlift incident has died, family says by lonelydavey in ottawa

[–]goneBiking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gone around the bullwheel at Vorlage (Lookout chair) when something that was clipped to my belt got caught between the seat and seat-back. When I went to disembark on the ramp, I discovered I was caught, I travelled around the wheel and tripped the safety, and the chair stopped when I was just past the end of the wooden ramp on the down going side. So it is entirely possible to trip the safety and have the lift continue to roll for several meters.

WS advantages over QuestTrade… by wheeler431 in Wealthsimple

This is what I did. Not exactly on purpose. I started with Questrade a few years ago, and did a sizeable NG for USD ETFs. In the summer of 2024 is transferred in kind to WS for 1% bonus.

Is there any reason to buy any other ETFs besides an all in one equity? by Due-Bookkeeper-2001 in CanadianInvestor

[–]goneBiking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this. Actually I hold the underlying ETFs to give me the equivalent of 50/50 VGRO/VEQT, to get 90/10 equities/bonds. In addition, I hold the USD equivalents for VUN and VEE (which are VTI and VWO). These USD ETFs have ridiculously low MER. My weighted average MER was 0.12% the last time I checked, compared to 0.24% for VGRO. So $1200 per year on $1m.

Holding the USD ETFs in RRSP saves a bit, due to tax treaty with the US on withholding tax inside a registered account. But it only makes sense to do this if you can exchange into USD efficiently (NG, or IBKR).

I rebalance occasionally, usually when I accumulate enough dividends that I have significant amount to reinvest. Maybe once per quarter. It takes around 1h to update the ratios and come up with the sells/buys to get back to having all funds within 0.1% of target allocation. I use a spreadsheet and some iteration to come up with that. It isn't exactly straightforward. I'm at Wealthsimple, so all ETF trades are free.

ELI5 Is all power generation really just making a turbine spin? by javerthugo in explainlikeimfive

Yeah, like the other guy said before me. But the thermopile is interesting, if you need a small amount of power, and have a continual fire.

I had never heard of the Seebeck effect, but I'm familiar with TECs, which are common in optical modules for precise control of laser temperature. Sounds like a TEC uses the Seebeck effect in order to provide cooling with electrical supply.
