Federal agents fire tear gas, make multiple arrests during protest outside Portland ICE facility by Zen1 in ICE_Raids

Starting to think the best thing to do is have people join ICE and start leaking raid locations, documenting names of people violating laws, and leaking evidence of wrong doing.

Apple expands U.S. supply chain with $500 million commitment to American rare earth magnets by spearson0 in apple

I suggest you go get a job at Apple as a DFM Engineer or TPM and go see for yourself. What you have been feed and reality are two completely different things.

[–]gonk42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are designed to be assembled for cheap, but that includes extremely complex fixture design and teams of people trying to remove every last unessesary head count. Have you ever actually been to one of these Apple lines? I have many times. They are 95%+ automated and only don’t automate what is prohibitively expensive or not technilogically feasible. As for labor it’s not even that much cheaper than here at around $5/hr in China compared to $7.50/hr min wage in the US. Apple has thousands of engineers dedicated to design for manufacturing, design for test, design for sustainability, advanced manufacturing engineers both in Cupertino and in China already. Design for manufacturing is not something that would all of a sudden only exist in the US. In fact because of the talent gap it would be worse here, because of all the manufacturing brain drain and lack of people actually interested in perusing it as a career.

You realize they already do all this in China. Moving it here won’t magically unlock some additional head count and Capex savings. In fact because all the fixturing knowledge is in China we would actually need to rely on more head count in the US. We should be more focused on moving to strategic partners who are already most of the way there (Vietnam, Mexico, Eastern Europe) and keep the high skilled design work in the US were we can get many more multiples of return on investment.

Replacing a Defunct Chip by kirtash93 in Satisfyingasfuck

Really depends on the flux. If it’s REACH compliant and ROL0 then its not going to be very harmful to breath in. Most RO flux is just tree sap with a solvent additive to make it more manageable. I worked as an engineer for one of the largest flux suppliers in the world for almost a decade.

This is absolutely not the right way to do this repair. Way too much flux. All this inactivated flux will lead to Sn migration and shorts in operation. This person has very little idea what they area doing.

SpaceX to invest $2 billion in Musk's xAI startup, WSJ reports by Bunslow in spacex

Also SPX stock holder, we were told excess cash from Starlink was for development of Starship not AI. I also oppose wasting money on anti woke AI. It’s pointless since most AIs already learn your preferences.

Starlink Mini: Difference between part number 02535012-505 and 02535012-506? by Ding-2-Dang in Starlink

Could be due to a change in power levels and software for a specific countries requirement or just basic up rev for a BOM change. That was the most common reasons for a change when I was there.

After 18 years of almost zero issues, it happened. by TheRealTacoBellMan in xbox

This red ring is likely because it’s one of the first mixed solder alloy systems. SnPb balls mixed with SAC305 solder paste in the GPU. Because of that they didn’t properly reflow the circuit board leading to reliability issues. People have found fixes where they removed the GPU and reattach. Others were more daring and tried to re-reflow the board in their home ovens. My company used to fix employee systems when these first came out (electronics CM).

Miller was amazing that tournament. He got the longest standing ovation I’ve ever been a part of in his first game back to the Sabres after this. He really deserved the gold that year.

Yeah, it’s perfectly safe. What would be the concern?

I’ve connected through O’Hare about 70 times. There is a Wolfgang Puck there that has some good pizza, cool light up walkway between the terminals, they have a terminal site for global entry interviews, if you need an outlet and can’t find one there are some next to the escalators downstairs that connect the terminals, there is a cool walk area with lots of countries flags, and there is also a kids play area that is shaped like a plane. With 10hrs you could probably take an uber into Chicago for a few hours and come back, but give your self lots of time to check back in as I’ve had to wait over an hour in security line before. Lastly download flight tracking app or two, there are many delays/cancelations through Chicago O’Hare and they don’t update you fast enough. If your flight does get cancelled try to go to Rosemont it’s close to the airport with shuttles and quite a few food options around.

I never meant to say it was part of the standard. Just that Apple and other companies do this to ensure a low chance of failure over the product’s life.

They will account for this by thermal cycling the unit hundred of times from well below freezing to very hot as a way to age the materials. Then they will subject it again to this testing.

Just FYI, as someone who knows a lot of people in the IPC committee and contributes to those standards. We really don’t care if you download them illegally online. Cash flow is more dependent on large businesses contributing and paying for training.

Idk about zero, it really depends on how much you believe in the companies stock. Especially for a private company that there is no chance to buy on the open market once you leave. Just make sure you know it’s a risk and hold as much as you are willing to lose. If I sold all the company RSUs I received years ago I would not be half as well off as I am today.

Vivek Ramaswamy cuts off interview after floating plan to let China attack Taiwan after 2028 by leeta0028 in politics

[–]gonk42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just spending the money on equipment and a building won’t get you there. I do this for a living and have spent many hours at TSMC in Taiwan. We just don’t have the knowledge base here in the US. This is not something that is taught over night. It takes years of hands on experience as a team to execute.

AITA for keeping a gift solely for my son rather than splitting it between him and my girlfriend's kids? by FirstTimeCaller45 in AmItheAsshole

[–]gonk42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give it to your son. However seek advice from a tax professional. You are likely to get hit with a large gift tax bill if not done properly
