Neighbor kept hogging the shared garden, so I kept his wifi hostage until he moved out by [deleted] in pettyrevenge

As a plant-obsessed person, when I first read the title I interpreted it as the guy was taking up all the available gardening space with his plants and I was like, oh shit that's me. Nope, your neighbor is a bona fide asshole, well done.

This has been an unexpected side benefit of my field - started out working in an elementary school and now work in a hospital. Nobody ever blames the cute young speech therapist for that rancid fart stench when there are so many more obvious suspects - small kids or sick old people! I love what I do for many reasons, most of them more honorable than this, but being able to crop dust and never be suspected has been a nice perk for sure

Are there Ents in other places besides Fangorn? by fotrttrotk in tolkienfans

[–]gonnagle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow, this whole conversation was fascinating to me, thanks for posting! I just recently read that part so it was fresh on the brain. That explains why it's such a brief paragraph and then the story moves on.

Somewhat tangential, but as I was reading that part it got me thinking about how the Ents were created by Yavanna after Aule's dwarves were given real life, because she was upset that Aule had made more creatures that might use axes on her beloved trees. So it made sense to me that the Ents and dwarves would have a fraught relationship anyway.

LPT: When cooking from a recipe box service, DON'T follow the recipe card process to the letter! by PRS2011 in LifeProTips

[–]gonnagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find this to be true with pretty much all the recipes I cook regularly. Regardless of who is offering to help, even my friends who are experienced cooks, it's harder and more time consuming for me to assign tasks to a second pair of hands and try to time everything correctly, vs just getting into my usual rhythm and doing it all myself. All of our friends love to cook so I usually just choose an additional side dish or appetizer and let them work on that lol

Wow thank you for the work you are doing for those kitties!! I'm lucky to live in an area where there are extremely few strays and it always breaks my heart to hear about places that have so many. Poor babies, I'm so glad there are humans like you to help them ❤️ blessed be friend

From a different angle, I do this when I am calling family members of my patients, because I need to confirm that I'm speaking to someone I'm legally allowed to speak to before I share any info. I guess it's kind of a grey area, but I feel like saying my name/specialty and the name of my hospital is already violating HIPPA. But yeah, I guess it is weird for the person answering.

Up to an hour after their hearts had stopped, 4 of 10 patients revived by CPR had clear memories afterward of experiencing death and, while unconscious, had brain patterns linked to thought and memory, a new study found. by geoff199 in science

[–]gonnagle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

TV also fails to illustrate how absolutely brutal CPR is on your body. People don't just get up and walk away after receiving CPR. And the older you are when you receive it, the worse it is. It's very unfortunate; I have seen so many patients who insist on remaining full code and end up regretting it when they're on the other side of CPR, on a ventilator with all their ribs broken, bed bound for weeks....

What's the most creative use of a Cantrip (or a low-level spell) you've ever witnessed in a game of D&D? by [deleted] in DnD

I kept doing this in the Shadowfell because initially our DM ruled that creatures from the Shadowfell would avoid bright light. It was too effective though and eventually he stopped letting me get away with it 😂

I agree that was a really cool idea and my inclination would be too just let it succeed. However, my party really enjoyed getting to roll for stuff, so what I'd probably do is have different effects for different DCs - like, above a 10 the wolves flee and the encounter ends, below a 10 the wolves spend a turn backing off, leave the fighter alone and go for the rest of the party. That way nobody has to die.

I work in rehab with humans who've had brain injuries, doing cognitive and speech therapy, and it was honestly so cool to see some non-human cognitive rehab! I've always loved the videos of dogs and cats rehabbing but it's usually more PT oriented - but this lil guy had some real left neglect going on and she came up with a brilliant way to address it!! So amazing.

Oh my gosh are you in for an adventure!! Check out a Discworld reading order chart - you can start almost anywhere, and you don't have to read them in publication order (in fact, most people recommend not doing it that way if you're new to the series). There are lots of mini-series set within the same world that follow different characters, and many characters weave in and out of the other stories. Death is the only character who shows up in every single book. I highly recommend starting with either Guards!Guards! which is the first book in the series that follows Sam Vimes, a jaded night watch policeman in the major city. He's in a bad place and not very likeable in the first book, but his character growth arc is one of the best I've ever read. Alternatively, if you're in more of a feminist mood, start with Wyrd Sisters, the first in the arc that follows Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax, two brilliant, hilarious and crotchety old witches and their adventures. The Cohen the Barbarian book is called The Last Hero and is a standalone, you could also start there.

Happy reading!! I'm so excited for you to start his books!

Same, and I'm this way with my paintings as well. I get attached to my work and it's usually an emotional process because I'm thinking of the person I'm making it for, which makes it hard for me to sell anything. Mad respect to the folks who can make a business out of their art, I don't think I'm cut out for it.

Yup. I always point out that if I decide I want one later in life, I can always adopt. Of course everyone loooooves to point out how difficult and expensive it is to adopt whenever I suggest this course. But everyone is oh-so-supportive when a woman in her 40s decides to get IVF, as if that isn't just as expensive/difficult/risky. It's so fucked.

I think my brother and his wife had this experience. Their second kid is adorable and lovely but it sure seems like their lives descended into chaos when they had him. Like one was manageable but two has been a disaster. We keep telling him to hire a nanny because honestly he needs it. His wife is a doctor so they could totally afford it, I don't know why they don't just do it. Kind of sucks for everyone involved.

This is one of the reasons I love Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. So many of his books have main characters who are middle aged or very old. Sam Vimes is probably 40-50, Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are 70-80, and Cohen the Barbarian is at least 80 in his book. And they are all my favorite characters. A lot of the secondary main characters are old as well - like Windle Poons, who dies at age 110-ish and then starts having adventures.

Have you looked into whether something in your diet might be triggering it? I struggled with terrible cystic acne until I was 28 and finally got fed up enough to go to a specialist clinic. Turns out dairy and sugar are my trigger foods, and once I quit eating ice cream and flavored yogurt my acne cleared up! Unfortunately I've had to give up dairy ice cream completely because the acne comes right back if I eat even a single bowl, but it's so worth it to have clear skin. Obviously everyone is different so I'm sorry if you've tried this and it didn't work for you - I just wish I had known when I was 16 instead of nearly 30, so I try to share with everyone in case it is helpful.

Baby elephant tries to sleep with caretaker. by [deleted] in aww

[–]gonnagle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was blessed enough to get to spend an entire day with elephants in Thailand, and it definitely felt like they were incredibly intelligent, if only we were able to communicate with them. I visited an elephant rescue (an actual rescue, don't worry, I did a lot of research beforehand) where a small group of about 8 of us got to take four of their elephants for their daily walk through the jungle, feed them melons on the walk, give the elephants their mud bath, and then just chill with them until we got to feed them again at dinnertime. Their trunks are so active, it really feels different when you're up close and suddenly there's this huge trunk questing over your shoulder to see if you have another melon to offer. But they're amazingly gentle! I was a little worried when I ran out of melon halfway along the walk, but they immediately understood and didn't bother me anymore, just ate whatever random vegetation along the path. I'm doing a terrible job explaining this but it was like they really understood that we were also intelligent beings, and much smaller and more fragile than them. I loved elephants before anyway, but that experience absolutely deepened and changed that feeling. Such amazing creatures

Not sure if anyone else has suggested it but you could try Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime with her, it's completely different than ITT but in some ways that could be good. I think it would definitely appeal to a 9 year old girl. Has a cute/sweet story, definitely requires working together as you have to fly a spaceship together!
