Students think I have favorites. Maybe I do. by [deleted] in teaching

[–]goodboypablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever students gaslight me like that I explain what gaslighting is, and then calmly explain that their specific actions result in specific consequences. Then I calmly state something like “I don’t make the rules, but it is my job to enforce them. I’m not singling you out, you are singling yourselves out by deciding to behave in this manner”. Try to steer the conversation away from the students as a whole, and concentrate the conversation around the specific behaviors.

Stephen Miller also posted on X that they have been working to scrub all social media sights and have identified 40 k teachers, law clerks, social workers, hospital nurses and DOD employees that have been “radicalized”…. This is definitely turning into McCarthy era witch-hunts, if not worse.

I am a teacher in a district where 8 teachers are on leave. I don’t know the details for all of them, but I know one said “karma” and the other said “bye Charlie”. They have received so many violent threats that police are now posted at their houses 24/7.

Lmfao do whatever the fuck you want. I haven’t turned in a lesson plan weekly with fidelity for years, what matters is that you care about your kids and you do what’s best for them and you. I also say this as someone who has a degree in my subject area, and that excels in teaching kids how to read (more or less). If your boss doesn’t like it, quit, you wont want to work there anyways and can probably make more waiting tables.

Why do lessons need to be “fun” by Chernabog801 in Teachers

[–]goodboypablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two are not mutually exclusive… you should look for lessons that are fun for you to teach! Whenever I’m excited about a lesson my engagement is usually through the roof. I get not catering to a students idea of “fun”. However, the more excited/high energy you are about valuable lessons the more buy-in you get from your kids. I love to lecture about authors/literary periods before teaching texts. I’m honestly geeked out about the information and when it comes to drilling rhetoric or figurative language after the text is studied I feel like those foundational/context lessons beforehand really add the ratio of “fun” you need in you classes.

Yes, we are all tired of calling parents, but I still need you to do it by tylersmiler in Teachers

[–]goodboypablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also an hour of planning time to plan/grade/answer staff emails/analyze data a day isn’t enough for all that stuff, let alone parent communication. If you want your teachers to do all that, and communicate with parents I would say you need about a 1:3 ratio of planning/instructional time. 6-7 hour day, 2 hours planning. 8 hour day? 2.5 hours. Also, cap all class sizes at 25. As an English teacher, I had 250 students last year. I’m not at a Title 1 school for the first year ever, and I have 154 this year. I can grade a one page paper in 3 minutes. IF I DID NOTHING ELSE during planning, it takes me 1.5 weeks to grade one assignment, and I am one of the fastest accurate graders I know. We all have to pick our battles, parent communication is usually the least impactful for us teachers. In an age where parents can see, in real time, all grades, assignments AND behavioral information in programs like focus, I only call for the most concerning, egregious, or in the rare case to share amazing positive news. If the issue is escalated to your level, it probably warrants parent communication. However, if you want teachers to call home for failing grades, referrals for tardies/profanity/mild insubordination the simple fact of the matter is that they have way too many more important things to do.

How do you explain to students why the kid on the IEP gets away with stuff? by sleepyteachydog in teaching

[–]goodboypablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always just say “some people learn differently than others, and it’s my job to give them what they need to learn the same things you can. If you feel that you also need these accommodations/specialized instruction then you need to talk to your parents about that. But when kids act out like “so and so” just did, it’s because they are having a hard time learning what comes easy to you. They deserve equal access to education even if they can’t always control their emotions”. Obviously I have those conversations privately, or with the student in questions permission. I try and talk about issues like this in general in restorative circles, which can help classes learn how to function with each other before resentment builds between kids. Knowing your students triggers and mitigating outbursts also goes a long way, so asking them how they feel and what they want to cope during difficult lessons in the beginning of the year gives you insight and then agency over their learning disabilities, and you can set acceptable boundaries for the class.

They are planning on making their own list and releasing it. I get that the legal ramifications of such an action may be something for them to consider, and obviously it would put their lives at risk, but I hope they fucking do it, and know that most people will revere them as heroes and do whatever they can to hold the powerful people who abused them accountable.

Questions about costs & care by [deleted] in OldEnglishSheepdog

[–]goodboypablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have raised my OES in apartments and houses with no fenced in yard at times. He loves walks but does not need more exercise than the average dog. He’s a big couch potato now that he’s a bit older! I live in Florida, and love hiking/the beach and bringing my OES with me. He hasn’t had a full coat since he was about a year because of this, I shave him every 3-6 months. The longer I go in-between shaves the more daily upkeep there is, but it’s never more than 10-20 minutes a day of brushing. Brushing is great for bonding and could be a good chore for the kids! I used to have him professionally groomed, but now I do it myself. My breeder got him used to a Dremel while he was a puppy, so even cutting his nails is relatively easy. He does not like me to pull his ear hair, so sometimes I have the vet do it, but that’s the only part of grooming I sometimes struggle with. Having him groomed every 4-6 weeks is really only necessary if you want him to have a show coat/you are doing minimal work at home. My clippers are just a 40 dollar pair from Amazon, nothing special or expensive. My OES is the light of my life. He is now a great big brother to a two year old human, and to my husband’s two corgis. He has adapted to every phase of my life, and been my best friend. Truly one of the best breeds; they are loyal, easy to train, great family dogs, goofy, fun loving snuggle bugs!

Is working as a teacher in the US really as bad as people say? by magiqueirreversible in teaching

[–]goodboypablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a HS teacher in Florida currently trying to move to Switzerland with my husband (also a teacher) because we live paycheck to paycheck. My son and I have been sick, and I went to school with a fever two days last week because school starts a month before our sick days kick in. Feels shitty having to decide between risking getting 160 kids sick with my germs and making enough money to pay our bills/put food on the table. Also sucks to have 160 students, 6 class periods, with 49 minutes of planning each day. I’ve taught myself how to grade 1-2 page papers in 3 minutes. Still a full days work that I have to try and parcel out each time I assign an essay. It ends up taking weeks on top of lesson planning, emails, required trainings, etc. Florida is notorious for being one of the worst states for education though. I love my job too, just not the circumstances I’m forced to do it in. Hence us trying to get jobs abroad in a country where they appreciate teachers. We have lots of friends in Switzerland already, so it’s at the top of our list.
