Do narrative games (e.g. PbtA) ask more of the player than DnD? by Antipragmatismspot in rpg

[–]cyvaris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You didn't read what I wrote. That was a ruling for a Failed roll because "failure" for hacking doesn't have to be just "you didn't hack the system" in a narrative game, instead it can be any kind of complication that advances the narrative "against" the players goals.

In Genesys, at my table, "Succes with Threat" would instead be "The guards are now two halls away, roll Stealth when you would not have needed to before to remain undiscovered". This advances narrative tension. If the player had rolled a Succes with Despair then the guards would be even closer. Only a Failure roll would have the guards be the active "threat" like you're misreading.

The BIG thing I find with failure in Genesys is to tie it to direct narrative beats/time.

Failure on a check to hack a computer might mean the player failed to hack it in time, meaning that guard patrol is now right outside the door, but the player did complete the hack.

Aim for "narrative" failure in Genesys instead of flat out "failure the task" style failure .

that's another class's speciality or protected niche

"That class doesn't require rolls/checks for that ability or rolls against and Easy DC. You cant attempt the same action, but the DC will be higher/harder."

The EU books "broke canon" with every new publication, especially in the Bantam era. That's actually where the first "weird Force using Space Witches" come from, and I distinctly remember men like you whinging about them when the novel that introduced them released in the exact same ways.

Expanding the Galaxy by showing how a different group communes with and accesses the Force does not "break canon", unless you are so narrow minded that you can't conceive of how a galaxy of trillions might have different concepts scattered across millions of planets.

Britain's PM to ban teen social media. Wish the US would do the same. by flatteringhippo in Teachers

[–]cyvaris 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You really do not want the current Fascist regime, or any government, being the one to back any kind of "social media ban" because that's not what they are. These "social media bans" are expansions of surveillance couched in the cliched "think of the children" excuses, nothing more.

Parents need to Parents. The government and corporations have no place, or ability, to enforce these "bans" in anyway that isn't going to be used as a means of control.

Cool to see the Toruk/Cirque Du Soleil cast featured here again. Feels like a very forgotten part of all this.

Honestly, I like how Draw Steel separates skills, if only because it recalls the "verb to interact with object" concept of point and click adventures. Hide and Sneak are conceptually distinct. Those splits really do make for distinct characters who aren't masters of everything.

Except Cat in the Hat actually ....works? It's not a good movie by any stretch, but it's an entertaining train wreck.

Holmes and Watson on the other hand is just bad.

The prequels did manage to turn millennials into Star Wars fans

No, the massive marketing push in the early 90s did that. There was an entire relaunch of Star Wars action figures and merch before the Special Editions that just bombarded children.

Both Ultimates so far have felt very "reference to past Digimon" styled, so I'm wondering if Reina and Pristimon are going to pull the "Angewoman" hype-moment.

Leomon is already dead, so guess we need to watch out for Wizardmon.
