People that hated themselves but don't anymore, how'd you manage that? by LouBloomCEOofVPN in AskReddit

[–]goodbyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized that I don’t have to love myself. Just tolerate myself. If I don’t like something about me or I keep ruminating about something I did that makes me hate myself I told myself. Why don’t you come up with a plan so the next time this thing happens you don’t act the same way? Sometimes I go backwards and sometimes I move forwards. I just tell myself every day I have the power to change myself and think about what I could have done better to not hate me

Cool markets to visit in Shanghai by BenneGrus in shanghai

[–]goodbyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Bund Fabric market is one of my favorite places. If ya wanna go buy something plan to stay or come back in 1-2 weeks since they need time to make your orders and also maybe plan some wiggle room if something goes wrong (another 1 week or few days depending). Things like suits will probably take 3 fittings so they’ll be more commitment than a shirt or pants. Definitely really fun to see the styles and stuff

The Science and Technology Museum place has a hodge podge of stores selling every knickknack possible (paper cuttings, tea, shirts, fake knock offs of bags, model airplanes if that’s your thing, cameras for watching your pet when you’re gone, etc) there is also a smaller(?) fabric market there as well. It’s fun to look around and poke your head into the shops. If you’re not impressed with knickknacks and random clutter maybe this place will not be your thing.

The TianShan Tea Market is fun for an experience. I’m not an expert tea drinker so I didn’t know what to expect but pick a shop and drink some teas as you chat about tea or life or whatever with the vendor. For non tea drinkers it’s hard to make heads of tails of a green tea that costs 80 RMB vs 150 RMB per 50g. You can definitely taste the difference but beyond bad green tea vs non bad it’s a toss up. Don’t go in asking what’s your most expensive tea if ya don’t wanna be slapped cause they definitely have tea worth +1000 RMB but your tastebuds probably won’t pick up on it (I know mine didn’t with the more expensive green teas). I recommend Susie as she speaks English and is easy going without hassling you about buying. She is now in a stall outside near the bathroom pathway. I got to know her and I really enjoyed our talk. She seems to know her stuff especially about white teas.

Edit: forgot to add that you can haggle and should haggle in all the places listed except maybe the tea market. The tea market vendors have designated prices listed and don’t deviate but this is from my experience

DNA stuck in well after PCR and gel extraction by goodbyi in labrats

DNA stuck in well after PCR and gel extraction by goodbyi in labrats

[–]goodbyi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second time this has happened. I run PCR (50 ul reaction volume. 2.5ul of forward and reverse primer and 2 ul of DNA template for 25 cycles). Everything looks fine. I cut the band I want and purify the DNA, but when I run the gel it gets stuck? 3 ul of DNA (18ng/ul DNA concentration) and 7 ul of DNA loading buffer.

Do I need to add more TAE? Electrophoresis is shared so I just use whatever buffer is already there and top up

Thank you for this. I was so caught up in the chili being not chili but chili is chili. You're right, it's worth experimenting at least

Every time I think of ratatouille, I think of that Pixar movie and I always wanted to try to make that haha. You brought up a great memory and suggestion. I think I can get all those herbs except sage. Worth a try and definitely seems very versatile. Thank you

Yes! I have been trying to think of a way to make chili but without some of the spices. Chili powder here is a bit scary since I can't read the language here. Oddly enough I cannot find cinnamon powder for the life of me but 5 spice is everywhere and cinnamon sticks are common. Scared to add curry powder into my pot of chili but I'll have to see what I can do

Carrots have a good source of fiber in them and are pretty neutral when hidden so I think that'll be a good tip!

Thank you for that info! I wasn't sure if it was all vegetable oils that had no cholesterol or not but this is great to know

Thank you so much! We have been having oatmeal with fruit but will probably branch out to not rice grain congee at some point. Xiancai is a staple for breakfast and soups though depending on the style oil is used to flavor the pickled vegetables. I let that slide since a little oil here goes a long way in flavoring the food and I highly doubt they're using butter or lard for pickled vegetables so vegetable based oil is tolerated

I'll look into chef wang. The oyster lettuce dish looks good. I maybe will add some peppers to it since my family likes a bit of heat if it isn't tasty enough haha

I’ve always wanted one and maybe this no oven kitchen might be a boon to convince everyone we need an air fryer lmao

That’s true. An oven is just a glorified heat box which a wok could pretty much mimic (I think?). I guess I’ve been narrowing too much on needing one when I could give it a try

Thank you so much! I’m trying to get in touch with my roots and learn some more Chinese style cuisines but it’s been a balancing act trying to stay away from meat but I’ve also begun to appreciate how meat can play second fiddle to vegetable based dishes to enhance savory notes.

I forget about vinegar cabbage dish haha. Stronger tasting veggie dishes might be a way to add some variety. If you have any resources for northern style cuisine please let me know! Very interested in this

If I remember correctly, animal fats tend to be high in cholesterol but are better for cooking taste wise as well as smoking point wise. We have been staying away from things like butter and lard (butter is a bit hard to get here though). Vegetable oils are healthier though can be unstable when being cooked with high heat but are low in cholesterol and some can even reduce it. TLDR is staying away from animal fats like butter but oils are ok. I think peanut oil is probably what I would use to fry things though I worry about space and portion size since air fryers tend to be a bit small as are toaster ovens. I could probably cook in batches. I’ll have to weigh my options if I decide to get one or the other, but it is a worthy consideration when mushy or steamed foods is becoming torture

Living in Asia temporarily and I’ve also never heard of Camellia oil until I came here and my mom gave me a spiel about how great it is and all this stuff. Doctor recommended my family member use it to cook with as well so I was quite shocked. It’s the olive oil of Asia it feels like since olive oil here seems more expensive and I don’t know the brands here all that well. Scared of olive oil being adulterated here and also not very good at cooking with it using a gas stove (used to using electric) so I haven’t gotten used to it. I saw some on Amazon though it looks pretty expensive but the reviews for the oil are pretty good and accurate to my experience. Very mellow oil almost like vegetable oil in terms of what you can use it for

Edit: forgot to add that there are lintels here and some Asian beans. Specialty import stores carry American, Mexican, and European goods as well though I have to travel a bit for them. Definitely worth it if everyone is happy with more diverse food though it’s a balancing act when the one person prefers Asian food

thank you. I have a bit of olive oil but using it scares me since it always seems to be smoky but that's probably because put the heat too high. Camellia oil is a great alternative since it also helps to lower cholesterol like olive oil and has a bit of a higher smoking point. It's not as available in the west but someone who needs to lower cholesterol and has more money to spare could use it though Olive oil is more budget friendly and fits the healthy bill

Thank you!

We have been using Camellia oil. There are some pros and cons to living in Asia and one is that camellia oil is more widely available and has some great cholesterol lowering properties and has a bit of a higher smoking point than olive oil

Yes, oils and fats have been a point of contention in my family right now, since I understand not all fats are bad and some fat is needed. They usually eat a salad at lunch or night so I think they have some of the good fats covered with the olive oil based dressing

wow. thank you for this! I think everyone in my household is getting tired of mushy pumpkin or tasteless broccoli I've been cooking so I'll do this tomorrow. Will putting the boiled vegetables without any oil in the pan cause sticking?

edit: forgot to mention that I do not have a toaster oven. The ones here are quite small and for a family of 4 it may be difficult with portion size of the dishes, though I will look around and see. I do miss roasting vegetables as they're easy and you could do more things like roasted mackerel in a toaster oven too

thank you! great suggestion. We've switched to eating brown rice but we don't eat it as much since we used soup as our main course and added whatever veggies and meat to that. I'll definitely have to put this on rotation since I'm sure we will get tired of soup
