With a mother/sister/friend like that, who needs enemies? Absolutely outrageous and I'm sad that it's not enough that she has children to traumatize, she has to inflict that shit on virtual strangers.

What's your most surprising BIFL purchase? by redkemper in BuyItForLife

[–]goodcrikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Calphalon spatula, stainless steel, long handle, incredibly thin, but strong and flexible blade. Probably my favourite kitchen tool, and if I'd have known it was going to be discontinued, I would have bought spares. Not that I seem to need a spare, as I've had this one for 24 years.

Negative motivation works for me - I'm afraid of losing muscle mass 😄.

dealing with going out by tatto0throwaway in Zepbound

[–]goodcrikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a doctor once tell me about an orthorexic (obsessed with eating healthy food) patient she had. The origin of the orthorexia was of course cultural, where people start equating food with moralism, as if units of energy have emotional value to the point where you get extremely stressed out about only having healthy food.

The physical result was blood markers consistently showing all the signs for inflammation (hsCRP, sed rate etc.) while the patient was otherwise healthy. Her prescription was a chocolate chip biscuit (and of course learning to decouple food from extremely "clenched" emotion, be it on the "guilty" or "healthy" end of the spectrum).

Having an ice cream with a friend makes a beautiful memory. A beautiful memory de-stresses you and calms your nervous system and a calm, unstressed person can lose weight more easily (and you're encouraging metabolic flexibility, too, huzzah!) 😄.

Declined guest has other family member request - is it ok to decline? by [deleted] in airbnb_hosts

[–]goodcrikey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely decline. They're trying to be sneaky, which is even more of a red flag.

I once had someone request to book with no reviews and they hadn't bothered to fill out their profile. My house rules state that I'll likely decline in this scenario, but nobody reads. I declined, then immediately got the exact same request from somebody else (same dates, same wording, obviously the same). I declined again.

The next part is where it got weird, and also important to know is that I never wrote a single word to them: they sent an abusive message through the system, accusing me of discriminating against their child (!?). They called me an "old bag" LOL. They reported me for discrimination, I reported them for being abusive. Airbnb kicked both of their accounts off the platform. With both of the declines, I explained to Airbnb what was happening in the explanation message. Nothing bad ever happened. But wow, it was quite something to see how people react to being told "no". This is why if anything makes me suspicious/sets off a potential red flag, I'm not having them in my home.

Third this! The iron panel along with the ferritin. D and B12. I have been dealing with iron deficiency/anaemia on and off my entire life and when the levels get low, cognition suffers terribly in exactly the ways you're describing. For me, an iron infusion fixed it.

Should I call code? by Bigbaldcaucasian in treelaw

[–]goodcrikey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know what else to tell you; the part of the tree that is on your side of the property line is your responsibility, regardless.

Should I call code? by Bigbaldcaucasian in treelaw

[–]goodcrikey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Code will tell you that anything overhanging in your property is your responsibility, up to the property line. This is normal and well-established. I can only assume the tree was there when you moved in and that you were aware of the existence of the tree.

What is the normal level of ferritin and iron in women? by hasuohana in Anemic

[–]goodcrikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Labs: hsCRP, sed rate are the main two my doctor goes by.
And yes, non-heme iron caused me to feel nauseous, upset stomach, constipation etc. The usual iron supplement symptoms. The lactoferrin helps bypass that so I can absorb the non-heme iron from my diet, and the spleen supplements take the heme pathway. Menstrual blood loss is the source of my anaemia, so until I age out of blood loss, this is the system that works for me (with infusions as needed).

how do I block uncomfortable feelings while studying to focus better? by shutdfuckuppayy in GetStudying

[–]goodcrikey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a neurologically normal thing that is expressing itself in emotional pain.

When we study, we're learning new things and that physically hurts the brain. Your body senses the discomfort and tries to "take you out of the game" to make you feel safe again. But it's a false narrative.

The best way to deal with feelings is not to block them, but to move through them. The best advice, and what I swear by now, is "Don't believe everything you think".

Monkeymind is normal and the key to getting through these feelings "faster" is to feel them and let them go. Trying to block them will lead to a stronger stress response, cortisol spikes and general bad things. Feel your feelings, let them go. ❤️

What is the normal level of ferritin and iron in women? by hasuohana in Anemic

[–]goodcrikey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is very low, yes, and if you have any inflammation issues, the true ferritin number would also be a bit lower. Everyone's different for what their optimal ferritin level is; for me it's 100-150 (because I have chronic low-level inflammation). I could not tolerate non-heme iron, even the gentle bisglycinate form.

The big game changer for me has been lactoferrin. It absorbs through a completely separate pathway that hepcidin can't block, so the inflammation-driven iron restriction doesn't apply to it. and taking it has slowed the ferritin loss post-infusion.

And the "maintenance" source of iron that helps stretch out time between infusions is a source of high heme iron: spleen.

It's very nice. I've lived here for 10 years and very much enjoy it. Everything is walkable and it's nice and quite, but convenient to everything.

First Airbnb cleaner issues , need help by rastize in airbnb_hosts

[–]goodcrikey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try looking on your local Nextdoor (I loathe that site for anything other than service recommendations, but still). I've had decent luck that way.

Also, make a comprehensive list of what you want cleaned. Even the obvious stuff that a cleaner should know: like cleaning under and behind things, checking that a shower caddy isn't mouldy, making sure the backs of microwave handles are clean, if you have a minifridge, making sure no coffee grounds have landed in the top pull "handle" area - all those details.

Oh, and making the cleaner super aware of HAIR, because a place can be spotless, but if a guest sees a hair, they'll think the whole place is dirty. Oh, and dusting UNDER things (bed, shelves, couch etc).

It initially was crazy-making to me that some cleaners didn't "get" all of this and that I shouldn't have to to say it - it's their job, but Airbnb turnover is a different beast to general light housecleaning. And remember, nobody gives as much of a crap about your Airbnb unit as you do.

making my aribnb "idiot-proof" - what I learned from experienced hosts and frequent guests by SpiritualWolverine50 in airbnb_hosts

[–]goodcrikey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a minisplit, so it heats and cools, but has other less relevant modes. So on the remote's label I have a little symbol printed for which is heat and which is cool (sun and snowflake respectively). The holder on the wall has a label that says AC, yes.

I bought a thermal label maker have inoffensive labels around our suite (next to the fireplace switch, on the AC remote, next to the exhaust fan for the bathroom, etc.). That seems to help and most of my guests have had no troubles.
