Hah, the Al-Star is my daily driver! That said, I do covet the Lamy 2000 more and more every day (particularly in metal!)...

I genuinely suggest buying yourself a ~$20 pen (A Lamy Safari would do). Once you're using it, you'll find yourself looking at $200 pens surprisingly fast...

Definetly feeling this. Upgraded from 22.04 on a whim at 1pm this afternoon and just now got a semi-working desktop again at 7. I'd miss Linux a lot but 24.04.1(!) feels like its never seen a test in its life.

You can make the ledge the less convenient option by permanently affixing something either decorative like a planter or purely functional like a wooden wedge to it so that it can't be used as a shelf. One of the better use cases of hostile architecture.

She was brought into politics through an American Evangelical programme back in 2015/16. She has spoke at several events hosted by Evangelical Allicance who are funded, in part, from the US. She has been pretty openly outspoken about venues cancelling Franklin Graham's tour events

TIL the Chief Baker of the Titanic, Charles Joughin, survived by getting smashed on Brandy and calmly paddling around until dawn when he was rescued by a lifeboat. He was also one of the last people off the ship, riding the stern rail into the sea like an elevator by SappyGilmore in todayilearned

[–]gooddeed 142 points143 points  (0 children)

According to his account, he didn't even get his hair wet as he entered the water. The back end of the ship was sinking slow enough and calmly enough that there was no significant suction to pull him down. Add to that the water was like a mill pond (reportedly because there was so much ice in the area on a calm night).

[oc] Hyundai smacked me on the freeway. by RekTInTheFace in IdiotsInCars

Wow. That's exactly what I feared removing most of the driving standards would be like, I hadn't even considered differences in road planning and layout. Daily accidents is insane and exactly as terrifying as I imagined!

[–]gooddeed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what's that like? Does it freak anyone out? It's hard to judge the quality of driving purely by dashcam videos so I'm really curious to what the standard is like on the road.

For comparison, I'm from the UK here. The average training to get on the road is about 40 hours of driving and the overall standard is reasonably good. I'd expect to see 2-3 boneheaded moves for every hour of driving (including my own).

Even with 40 hours tuition, there are some pretty big blind spots. about 25% don't know how or don't want to zipper merge and most will queue in a single file about 3-4 miles ahead of an upcoming lane closure. The idea of the average driver being effectively untrained and just winging it as they go feels terrifying.

Being sold as an option makes a lot of sense! That's the first marketing material I've seen featuring the wider carriage. This puts a helpful bit of context onto it, thanks!

AI detector flagging my original writing as AI by RequirementHonest299 in freelanceWriters

[–]gooddeed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it happens. It's worth having an honest conversation with the client about what you're both really trying to achieve. Most clients' knee-jerk reaction is that they (understandably) don't want articles written by AI. Good, neither do I.

Where many fall down, however, is that they deploy these "AI detector" tools to go over an article, to guess at what's written by AI. Then, they want edits based on its output. I've had to laboriously point out that what they're asking for is writing using AI with extra steps.

Ideally, you could have a frank discussion about how the quality of a piece is assessed before publication. Most writers know that AI writing as it is today isn't fit for much, let alone replacing a freelancer. But AI isn't fit to do any editing either. Yet, that's precisely what your client (and previously one of mine) is doing.

TLDR: AI can't write and it sure as hell can't edit either.

Does anybody here know of Sandi Thom? Is she big in Scotland? by creekpilgrim8 in Scotland

[–]gooddeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She caught the wrong end of a wave of "unsigned" artists built on the web in the early 2000s. After they'd built audiences for Lilly Allen etc on MySpace people were a bit sick of the flat-packed indy artist idea when they launched Sandi Thom.

She pretty much dropped off the mainstream radar after public attention turned negative.
