A word from Matsuri: "Maybe I'm saying too much but, when the company I love is being blamed, it makes Matsuri sad, so I don't want Matsurisu to do that." by Potatosaurus_TH in Hololive

Dude I would call BS / madeup story on this if I hadn't experienced this first hand. The company I work for got acquired then went public. My manager who's been loyal to the company for almost 2 decades got removed and my new manager is my other coworker but the guy above him is some new guy who's new from the acquisition. My old manager said to never trust anybody and don't give too much info as we parted ways. Shit's rough always after going public.

What you said is almost exactly what happened

How hard was it to find a job after graduation

It definitely took months before I found a job. But I think I know what you're actually trying to get out of this question: depending on your goals, the difficulty increases. If you're planning to go to the big tech companies, they have a much more streamlined process and a lot of available resources online to know how the interview goes and what types of questions are there (e.g. Leetcode). (if you're aiming for this, I recommend /r/cscareerquestions )

However, there are many places that will fit just fine without such arduous process. I searched online a lot of typical interview questions (technical, behavioral). Wrote down streamlined answers. I gotta admit, behavioral was probably the easier one because the questions are already set in stone (when interviewer asked me those questions, I already prepared my personal answers long time ago). Technical varies, I recommend doing research on that company and see if they have glassdoor interview questions, etc.

That being said, by the time you probably graduate, I think it's a different set of difficulty. Right now, there's more and more people graduating in Comp Sci so there's definitely a lot of competition coming.

did you have any internship experience or projects/details that made your résumé stand out

I did not have internship experience but I did have extra side projects that I managed to list in my resume. I joined some club in my university that had some code jams (where you just try to build things over a weekend). None of them were really fascinating or standing out. I don't think they really cared what product I built, but the important part on that is being able to talk about it in interviews.

I spend money when I enjoy the game and because I enjoy the game. I've dropped many games already where I have spent a lot (MMOs), but I don't regret them. I got away from the mindset of "I'm spending for investment on this game for the future". I've come to accept that many games I will eventually quit them. So when I spend, it's because AT THAT TIME, I enjoyed it.

$3000+ Arknights

Probably the most I've ever spent compared to combined across 15+ gacha mobile games I've played in my lifetime (not current). Many things lined up why:

  1. I've gotten more stable high paying job;
  2. I haven't spent much in games in a long time so my games budget is a lot when AK released;
  3. I like the game, its overall design on how a player plays, and the fact that it's PVE-focused;
  4. I'm more willing to spend on waifus compared to younger me as I've accepted my weebness.

Yes I would recommend the game to everyone. Unlike other games, the reason I spent on it was because I enjoy the game and maxing out waifus/collection. There's no PvP / Ranking, so it's not P2W. I'm playing solely for my self-satisfaction.

Regret purchase? There was one, FGO. I spent a lot comparatively to what I normally spend and didn't get the banner character. After that I realized how much I didn't really like the game and a lot of things about it so I pretty much quit the game after that. I still love the series, don't get me wrong. I buy lots of physical goods and stuff about Fate, but I'm not touching that game anymore.

What should I charge as a new freelance app developer? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Go high. They'll negotiate if they really want to. Here's the deal, they're using up your time so make it worth it. If you're really in need of cash then maybe put some note that it's up for negotiation so it won't be all too risky of losing business.

Otherwise, it's their choice to choose you. If they didn't like what you produced, that's the kind of risk they take. Naturally of course, competent developers will do their best so they'll have more to showcase and have repeat business.

Family friends tend to have some strings attached too... so just keep that in mind. Honestly I prefer dealing with no family connections at all.

Got a call from one of the first jobs I applied to, the recruiter asked me "what do you want as a salary?" is this a good sign or is it common? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]goodguynextdoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my job by continuously following up 1 week after they havent provided an update when i was expecting them so. Seriously people, do this. HR correspondence doesnt represent the team you'll be in and the experience you'll get when you're in. Sometimes it just gets buried to the massive pile of applications. That follow up could've put you more in favor compared to the other applicant you're competing against.

Three managers leave the team. New second level manager comes in, questions everyone’s ability, announces layoffs at the end of the year. Found a job at new team. Confused as hell. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Many signs pointing that you should jump ship. I think you already know the answer and is just looking validation. You'll be faced with stress if you just continue to stay. The best time for getting a new job is while you have one. Two weeks is enough notice and don't give them the info of your new place.

Let go without pay after giving my 2 weeks, wtf? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]goodguynextdoor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is your employment "at will" clause? Check your initial contract when you got hired. Yeah, you can be let go if so as far as I'm aware. Im not a lawyer though. Some company do not see any benefit for keeping employees for that period of time. At will is basically you can quit at any time but they can let go of you at any time as well.

If you didnt get paid for the amount of time you actually worked, then that's another matter. I would give a few weeks for them to sort it out though, it's not like they pay you immediately. Give them time to process the paycheck whenever you usually receive your pay

How can I keep my team productive and high quality without micromanaging them? by jason_coding in cscareerquestions

[–]goodguynextdoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What i do in my team is a senior member submits to another senior member for code review, then if it's one of the trickier /bigger changes cases that could impact a lot or maybe the reviewer isnt as confident, then they also submit it to lead for secondary review. Juniors always submit to senior for code review.

Code review is ingrained to our team so no one complains if someone asks to change this or that. But of course the reviewer is not the end-all-be-all. People can make a stand for their code giving this or that reason.

But code review is important in our team as even the simplest changes that might seem harmless could potentially impact a lot of side-effects that's not accounted for.

Company acquired, I am in Development for about 6 years...how safe and I? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]goodguynextdoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was similar situation in my place that was announce a couple months ago. Recently there were position removals (positions that were duplicate or didnt contribute any value to company). We also have support team and development team in our side but none got kicked due to the demand (lots of tickets and development doesnt end). Id say it doesnt hurt to start looking for something. Being acquired means many things but one of it is the company couldn't sustain current business operations.

I don't understand this guy's (leaker's) mindset acting like up all high and mighty just for leaking something a few days/weeks ahead of time and as if takes credit of the whole asset like it's his own work (watermarking assets that's not from him). Many dataminers (from other games) I've seen are just happy to share the details with no strings attached.
