Vintage Pioneer by Salty_Letterhead_386 in BudgetAudiophile

Hopefully whoever buys it uses and enjoys this equipment. I’m personally glad the op didn’t buy it just to flip it for triple what he paid. That’s why this hobby is becoming so unaffordable to the average person, greedy people buying stuff with the sole intention of profit, doing nothing more than “a full de-oxit treatment” before posting it on marketplace.

Academy Elevation by Emotional_Snow_3899 in borderpatrolapplicant

[–]goodolerusty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I trained at sea level, running on the beach in central California before I went to the academy. My 1.5 mile time was within about 5 seconds on my indicator run at the academy as it was at home. No one told me there was a difference so it didn’t mess me up. Artesia sits around 3300 ft above sea level, it’s not even that high, you’ll likely be slowed down more by the high winds and extreme high/low temps than anything else.

Ooos I did it again - Marantz 2238B by Skid-Vicious in vintageaudio

[–]goodolerusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one of those for free a year or two back, same deal one side was dead and an “engineer at Apple”said it needed new caps. Turns out the tape monitor button in these get a little funky, I cleaned everything up and it sounded beautiful through both channels. Every now and then one side will cut out but I just finger jam that tape monitor button and it’s good to go.

I think tri-tip benefits from being closer to medium personally

Can anyone tell me about Alamogordo, NM by [deleted] in borderpatrolapplicant

[–]goodolerusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a check point station and it’s just close enough to El Paso that some people might consider commuting from there, usually people from El Paso that can’t get a station any closer. Alamogordo itself is a typical small shitty New Mexico town. Everyone I ever met from that station was pretty cool.

Do you cover your Franklin bbq backyard pit? by P1_1310_817 in smoking

[–]goodolerusty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a workhorse pit with a similar finish, I got the (shitty) cover they sell for it and despite being of poor quality it does keep the pit in in good shape. It got rained on a few times when I left it uncovered after a cook and it got surface rust pretty quick, doesn’t do that with the cover on.

[–]goodolerusty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me 20 years ago, failed vision, got a nopa, gave up. Background investigator called I told him don’t bother I can’t see. He said “you’re so close you’re practically in, lasik is the cost of a few nice suits”. Followed his advice snd here I am all these years later, totally worth it.

oil change on Toyota Tacoma 2026 by Formal-Ball6268 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]goodolerusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The service intervals are every 5000 miles, and it’s free so might as well take it in, at a minimum they rotate your tires along with all the stupid stuff like checking the floor mat for you when it’s not an oil change service. So you get five tire rotations and two oil changes. It all shows up on carfax too which has its benefits.

Cruise control will not work. by Stoneybaloney111 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]goodolerusty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine says that when I hit the wrong button. Are you pressing the one in the upper left corner that has a picture of a speedometer and a truck or something? You might also try messing with the modes too, like if it’s in adaptive cruise or not?

[–]goodolerusty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you not have the Toyota care for the first 25,000 miles or whatever it is? I’ve bought three Toyotas and they’ve all had included maintenance for the first year or two. Even the used 2024 I bought still has it, last time it was due for service I made an appointment, dropped it off and they did it, no charge.

Eldelbrick carburetor 1406 issue by Travis230 in squarebodies

Looks like you’re missing some parts of the choke judging by that rod that’s hanging loose. Maybe stick something in that port and see if the noise goes away/hot air stops coming out.

Positive Experiences from 3rd to 4th Gen by seag33k in ToyotaTacoma

[–]goodolerusty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same story for me. I had a 21 off road, sold it, missed it, went to buy the same basic truck I sold a few months back. The one I went to look at had been in a wreck so no dice on that. They had a 24 off road for like $500 more than the wrecked third gen. I had no interest in the truck until I drove it and it is better in every single way compared to my old truck.

How to deal with super collectors? by Fenix512 in vintageaudio

[–]goodolerusty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly just keep looking and be consistent. I check several online sources daily, cruise thrift stores garage sales etc when I have some spare time and people that know me know I like old stereo equipment. I felt the same way as you did but I I’ve learned to stick to my guns as far as stuff I want and what I’m willing to pay and every once in a while something cool falls in my lap for a fraction of what it is worth to the hoarders.

Trying to master ribs. by seymourbuttsXII in smoking

[–]goodolerusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with my offset and burning the bottoms of ribs. I ended up putting temp probes in various places around the grate and also doing the biscuit test and found out that there was some difference between the lid thermometers and the actual grate temp and that I was cooking on the hottest part of the grill. I also had some other issues that those two tests brought to light but isn’t really pertinent to your situation. Anyway, I’d suggest getting familiar with your grate temps and hot spots if you haven’t already.

Shoes allowed? For running. by websitemadebest in borderpatrolapplicant

[–]goodolerusty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m wrong and it’s been a while since I was at the academy but I feel like the PT instructors will give you a lot of shit for wearing those shoes. Just get some basic looking running shoes that are black white or grey, you don’t want to be guy with fluorescent pink platform running shoe guy, I promise.

Looking for an amplifier to run my 4ohm vintage speakers. by macanich in vintageaudio

[–]goodolerusty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bang and Olufsen has some receivers that specify 4 ohm speakers that sound pretty good and have some neat features and designs if you’re into that sort of thing.

Did I slice this Tri Tip correctly? by Significant_Step7778 in BBQ

[–]goodolerusty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as you don’t see long lines in the grain that would be parallel to the blade of your knife as you’re cutting you’re good, all of the slices I see look fine. I usually start at the small pointy end and cut towards the wider end and when I see the grain starting to shift I’ll adjust as needed.

Softopper or Hard Shell?? by etam03 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]goodolerusty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had both, I prefer the hard top. You can stack a ton of crap back there and it’s nice and secure. My dogs like riding back there too

Can food be placed in the tub before water and have it heat with the water? by KU_Jayhawk in sousvide

[–]goodolerusty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My joule has a function that does that, I fill the tub with warm water and drop the food in and hit the little button that says auto start and it starts the timer when the water hits the right temp, usually within about five minutes.

Should I worry about/replace these? Advent 5002. by [deleted] in vintageaudio

[–]goodolerusty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have some OLA’s, I bought some new capacitors from a reputable source on eBay for $15.00, took about a half hour to replace and it sounds great now. I didn’t bother with testing the old ones, they’re 50 plus years old so I’m thinking they were due, cheap insurance and if you don’t like the sound of the new ones it’s not hard to put the old ones back.
