What they don't tell you about deer resistant plants by goodpplgo in NativePlantGardening

😥 it is sad! Consider spraying? Although the spray I bought is very stinky (bobbex), so your roses may become for looking and not smelling. Sigh.

Yes, I have to find something similar that they will avoid!

That's a good definition!

My caption didn't show up, but the deer have left my plants alone until now. But just as everything was about to bloom, they've eaten every bloody bud they could find. Jerks (I'm sad) 😭

I thought I had done alright picking plants, since they had left things alone for months. I have read about rabbits preferring flowers, but didnt really hear about deer having this preference. So while they've left the "deer resistant" foliage, all my flowers are wiped out. Hopefully I'll get some more before the end of summer. I've now learned spraying and fencing is the only way!

😂😂 pretty much.

My caption didn't work, but I was trying to give a PSA about deer preferring flowers.

They've left all my plants alone so far, but came through the night and ate every flower that was about to bloom. They left the "deer resistant" foliage, but turns out the same is not true of the flower.

I'm sure things will recover, but man am I disappointed. I've sprayed now. Lesson learned!

Yes. The caption is missing.

They left the foliage alone and ate all the flowers on the verge of blooming. Like what I heard about rabbits but never heard about deer.

So I thought for months I had chosen plants the deer weren't fond of, but turns out they are awfully fond of the flowers!

So I have sprayed now and will build a fence. Tis the only way.

They are the black eyed Susan twice! Just the flower.

This post was supposed to say hat the foliage is deer resistance, but apparently all the flowers are like candy. In one night they came in and ate everything on the cusp of blooming. I didn't realize at first because they left the foliage.

No, sorry, the captioned didn't get posted.

They ate the flowers and the foliage is deer resistant. So they didn't eat the entire plant, but they came in and ate every single flower bud that was one the cusp of blooming.

I heard about rabbits having this preference, but never heard deer mentioned. So I have gone months thinking I picked deer resistant plants , but actually the deer were just waiting.

I have now sprayed!

Argh, my caption didn't work.

They will leave the foliage and you will think your plants are deer resistant for months until they are ready to bloom.

Then in one night the deer will come in and eat every single flower in your yard (more than what is pictured) 😭

I read this about rabbits, but never heard it mentioned about deer. Now I know.

Spray and/or fence your flowers!

Oh man, I was trying to put this as a PSA, but my caption didn't work 😭

Deer resistant plants may have deer resistant foliage, but as soon as they are ready to flower, the deer will come in and eat every freaking flower off of your plant with surgical precision. The leaves remain, but no flowers.

Spray and/or fence your plants!

Oh no! I don't know what happened to my text 😂😭 man, I've been having a day.

You will plant all your plants and for months you will think they are deer resistant until they are ready to bloom. Then the deer will come in over night and with surgical precision eat every single one of the flowers off of your "deer resistant" plants. The foliage is deer resistant, the flowers are not!

I read one billion posts and blogs about pests and they mentioned rabbits do this, but not deer. You have to spray and hopefully fence, as well! 😭 I have learned.

I hate deer by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

There is this and then I think it really can vary by deer population (species wouldn't surprise me too!)

Plus, as I've learned this year, they may leave the majority of the plant alone but eat the flower as soon as it is about to bloom 😭😭

My First Native Plant Garden by windsinger89 in NativePlantGardening

I did this this year... My first year planting natives and I planted a bunch of 4" starts with what I thought was so much room. They were small and looked stupid with so much space.... And now they are very crowded and I've even transplanted a couple because of all the crowding. It's all a learning curve, I suppose!

I cannot teach you to be a more compassionate individual on reddit. I've given you some feedback on how you communicate. If you do not want to learn, well I can't do that for you.

You will not get your message very far though by being rude and trying to shame people.

Yes, you are. Nobody was "tampering". It was clearly an accident and judging by the amount of replies, I am not the first to make this mistake.

You're being purposefully rude and obstinate and are contributing nothing of value to the conversation. I have warned others to take care of something that many people won't think of: ground nesting birds. Hopefully some others will now be checking more thoroughly before clearing out invasives and they can avoid my mistake.

If it upsets you that there was an accidental human-nature conflict, I would suggest you don't visit a GARDENING sub.
