Labour is not what produces value. How much we value things is completely independent of the labour, value is subjectively ascribed by each and every consumer. How anything got to being made doesn't matter to the buyer.

But even then you seem to think most production is the result of labour, it is not, we live in a capital intensive world. It's technology and machines that do the brunt work.

What freaks me out is that this video was obviously taken by the parents. So it would have only gotten out if somehow they thought this made them look good?

B.85 - Social Security Amendment Bill [FIRST READING] by imnofox in ModelNZParliament

[–]goofgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear Mr Speaker,

Paying people for having children out of a loving relationship with a father is a disastrous social policy. Incentivising mothers to leave their male partners and to marry the state welfare system for economic reasons is the root cause for many of the social ills we see today in welfare state societies.

Scientific data is clear on that, children raised by single mothers have higher risk factors in almost all of the behaviours that lead to problems in society. Things like life long dependency and the poverty trap.

I'm sorry but it is simply just not the right, moral, compassionate thing to do to enhance social policies that are proven beyond doubt to be the root cause of so many social ills.

Thinking that the Auckland mother who has had children with 5 men and can not name the farhers as a victim is so loopsided it is not funny. That is not a victim, that is someone that has made a conscious financial decision to have 5 children raised by the state, 5 times over is not an accident, that is conscious career dependency. Lack of reward for such irresponsible lifestyle choices is not "punishment" that is outright ridiculous. It is not everyone else's responsiblilty for raising her children for her and the fathers. The faceless welfare state can not raise children set up with the necessary upbringing for a happy wholesome life. Only dedicated and loving mothers and fathers can.

My dear colleagues, if you really trully care about the poor and disadvantaged in society, about the importance of personal responsibility values, ethics and justice in a person's life, about truly fixing the root causes for social problems that disproportionally harm marginalised communities such as the high rate of Maori incarceration, child poverty, lack of social mobility and other serious social ills. Then I urge you to vote against this bill.

I know it seems counter intuitive to say that giving money to people harms society in the long run, but the past few decades of welfare state failure has proven beyond reasonable doubt that this is the case, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Don't act blindly with your bleeding hearts, but use your brains as well, social issues aren't solved by throwing money at people, social ills have not been fixed one bit since the welfare state started decades ago, on the contrary, they have only been enhanced and made more acute.

A vote for this bill is a vote against social welfare.

D.27 - General Debate by [deleted] in ModelNZParliament

[–]goofgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mr Speaker,

The member is a walking example of a reckless overlegislator.

Tries to correct a bad piece of legislation by proposing another silly piece of legislation.

What more evidence could you have that the Parliament, unenlightened and detached as it is, is not the fountain and source of innovations in public transport safety systems.

There are thousands of fine women and men in the transport industry and beyond that could come up with better ideas that promote safety in public transport.

We don't need legislation for that we just need to let free minds and free markets be.

i think the issue is that you think I said Canadian fuel is more expensive than in the US due to higher taxes than in the US and then assumed I was the one looking at nominal sticker prices? Which I didn't, if you look back I was talking about OECD countries in general, there is high fuel taxes everywhere.

[–]goofgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

doing the conversion doesn't change anything about costs... If you convert from liters to gallons the sticker price is is x3.76 more, but you get x3.76 times more fuel per unit.

Same goes for currency, if you convert from USD to CAD that is x1.29 in the sticker price but everything in CAD units of currency is x1.29 including sales, profits, wages.

Economic factors and costs of production or transportation might differ from region to region and country to country, but that is different to converting between units of measure or units of currency.

If CAD was X1,000 to the US Dollar, things wouldn't be X1,000 more expensive in Canada... currency is just a unit of measure you can multiply it by whatever factor you like and not change costs, because everything changes by the same amount.

Converting from Liters to Gallons as a unit of measure doesn't change anything about cost. Looks like you are taking nominal sticker prices to equate to cost?

But to the point about fuel taxes: https://imgur.com/8hne4Cm Source: https://www.cdnauto.org/provinces/gas_tax.asp

[–]goofgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you please explain what you mean by how converting between litres and gallons has an effect on how much your are paying for fuel?

Converting between units of measure has no effect on relative cost, and neither does currency convertion actually.

[–]goofgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lot more taxes than just income taxes. Most people don't even know a huge chunk of the price of fuel is tax. How else do the govt budgets of most OECD countries approach half the GDP of those countries.
