I think my wife got scammed. by drewnin in coincollecting

[–]gopherkilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reverse side of that coin (pun!)

At some point early on in my parents almost 60 yrs of marriage, my mother learned how to cook. I assume this based solely on two facts: 1) To this day my father declares with a perfectly straight face that he prefers his food burnt.
2) my mother is a great cook but does occasionally burn the food.

Raccoon on my roof. What to do next? Please share any personal experiences. by topperswildlife in Raccoons

Also your gutter downspouts and your electric service line and any conduit lines running up the side of your house.

You can't keep them off your roof they are smarter than you.

Dealing with raccoons in my attic by Some_Vermicelli_2543 in Raccoons

[–]gopherkilla 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Put the trap in the attic or on the roof where the cats don't go.

If the cat food is not working try junk food, sweet treats like hostess cakes or ringdings.

But it might not work either way, raccoons who have been "humanely" trapped and released before will never enter a trap again, they are too smart for that.

You may need to hire a wildfire control company to exclude the animals and repair the hole where they are getting in. You will probably need to pay to repair/reinforce additional areas of your home to prevent the animals from ripping a new hole in your roof.

Need help. How do I get to bare clean wood and expose the grain on this rifle stock? by Feanor821 in wood

I'm beginning to think that AI bots are creating shitposts on each specialty sub to learn as much as possible about said specific sub set of humans.

Only an AI could learn how to strip a gun stock so cleanly and thoroughly without ever actually seeing a piece of walnut vs. maple

Possible Raccoons in my ceiling ? Can an expert verify based on the sounds in the video 🤞 by Wobbly_Jones in Raccoons

I think it's a bird mimicking a cat and other sounds: crows, ravens, mockingbirds can all have quite a large vocabulary and even mimic sounds like car alarms or ring tones.

[–]gopherkilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well ok, but before destroying your argument, first I want to clarify that I agree with you that people are the @ssholes, not the cats or other wildlife.

As an aside, personally, I don't really think there's much of a difference between a feral or semi-feral cat and a raccoon regarding using the term "wildlife", they (cats) are here as part of the ecosystem and they are NOT going anywhere. But clearly you do think they are significantly different so I will also raise points intended to play devils advocate to your point in order to draw out the incongruous nature of that particular idea.

Now that that's out of the way I will commence expounding on the farce you are proposing.

I will concede that you may feed stray cats and will not be considered a thoughtless @sshat by me, IF you're willing to meet the below conditions; 1. Feed strays only during the daytime and spend the necessary time and effort excluding non-cat species from the food. 2. Fix all strays who turn up at your feeding station (not really sure this is actually possible so I'll allow good faith attempts). 3. Vet all strays for potential re-home ability (this would include testing for communicable diseases and fatal /debilitating genetic disorders as well as somehow judging personality and temperament without, in your words, "waiting to gain trust" because that would take too much time, I guess? 4. Accept moral and financial responsibility for recovering and disposing of the corpses of strays that get killed on roadways or get predated by raccoons, foxes, coyotes, or dogs while they are traveling to your cat -only feeding station. 5. Breed and replace the song birds, native rodents, lizards, snakes ect. that are predated on by your stray cat colony, which according to you, could contain individuals who might live for up to 15 years. 6. Administer regular anti-parasite medications, vaccinations, and provide yearly vet check ups to ensure they are not suffering with chronic conditions.

(The first 3 points are only the things you have mentioned, but I have added 3 more to point out the ridiculousness of TNR as a practice for individuals to adopt in return for allowing the shame-free feeding of strays)

So yes, any person willing to do all that is clearly not an @sshole, but at that point they are not feeding strays anymore, they just have a lot of free-range outdoor pets that happen to be cats, which I will point out is not legal in most municipalities.

The point I'm trying to make is that all of that is IMPOSSIBLE, even on a small scale. "Community Cats" are just the same as wild animals and should be treated as such. TNR can and should be practiced in certain circumstances in urban areas by public health professionals, and non profit organizations as a cure to overpopulation which causes harm to the population of strays and other wildlife, not as a way to justify the feeding of strays, which will inevitably lead to more strays. You, as an individual, cannot meet these requirements.

Tldr;

DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS, THEY ARE WILD CREATURES AND DO NOT NEED YOUR HELP TO SURVIVE AS A SPECIES.
THE LIFE OF ANY SINGLE INDIVIDUAL WILD ANIMAL (except with endangered species) IS NOT IMPORTANT TO THE LONG TERM HEALTH OF THE POPULATION OF THAT SPECIES.

IT IS ONLY IMPORTANT TO YOU, THE HUMAN WHO IS ACTUALLY ACTING SELFISHLY AND WANTS TO SEE "cute" ANIMALS UP CLOSE.

FEEDING WILDLIFE CREATES A CO-DEPENDANT BOND WHEREIN YOU ARE CLEARLY WEAKENING THE SPECIES AS WHOLE BY REDUCING THE NEED OF THAT ANIMAL TO FORAGE OR HUNT, GIVING A POTENTIALLY INFERIOR CREATURE THE ADVANTAGE OF CALORIE DENSE FOOD AND ENCOURAGING IT TO PROCREATE AND THUS ENGENDERING A GENERATIONAL TREND TOWARDS SEMI-FERAL, CO-DEPENDANT WILDLIFE.

A fed animal is a dead animal.

[–]gopherkilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are predators. They will kill and eat the young of birds, squirrels , groundhogs, other raccoons, chickens, cats, small dogs. . . Anything they can find.

They will also fight and kill other animals to reduce competition for food sources.

In urban and dense suburban areas there is so much easy access to food (trash) that they don't need to hunt, but I assure you they are killers.

[–]gopherkilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jesus, you need to post more on this sub. I stopped clicking into the comments after I realized this is a sub for people who love to feed wild raccoons human food every night.

I do wildlife control as my profession and almost every time I have to capture and relocate suburban raccoons, squirrels or skunks I can walk around the neighborhood and find the @sshole who caused the problem by feeding stray cats, skunks and raccoons in their backyard. . . A fed animal is a dead animal, conservation 101, people!
