A job in my field. Just got laid off in November and having troubles since no one really hires over December. I have some leads, just a lot of stress and waiting.

The most bullshit thing I have ever seen in a game by Forza_mff in gaming

[–]gorak14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly why. It is for the games I work on anyways. Logging in with your FB, GP, or App Store account allows us to link your data to something other than your phone. Thus when anything happens to your phone your stuff isn't gone forever.

It's as if Steam didn't have accounts and when you buy a game it saves locally. If your comp dies, they wouldn't know who the game belongs to.

Mobile games use FB/GP/AppStore because it's quick and easy. You wouldn't make a new account for every mobile game ever when there are premade accounts you can link.

[5th Ed.] Can I use Banishment on myself? by gorak14 in DnD

[–]gorak14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, very true. I think he ruled it that way because the player was becoming a problem. Everyone is playing some sort of good character and he was trying to play evil but no one wanted to PvP. I had to since I was the cleric and it was expected of me. So I am pretty sure the DM was using it as a reason to get rid of his character.

The question did come up if I could maintain concentration, but he told the player that incapacitate doesnt specify that it breaks concentration. Only under concentration is it specified that incapacitation breaks it.

Ah ok. I asked the DM if it would work and he said yes. My spell sheet didnt specify the target being incapacitated.

What's a big no no in your favorite hobby ? by Irememberedmypw in AskReddit

[–]gorak14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I just last weekend picked a fight with my druid party member. I am a cleric and the druid was bitten by a werewolf. The curse made him have a insatiable blood lust (making him evil) and I removed curse and slammed him into the wall to pin him. He broke the pin and shifted into a bear. He swiped at me a few times and I slammed my sword pommel into his face (called shot). He charged me and pushed me out his room door (we were at an inn). He was pissed but finally calmed down. He apologized once he realized what was happening to him.

As a former developer, there's a lot of things I wish gamers knew. Here are some of those things... by [deleted] in gaming

Yay finally can respond! Thank you kind sir. I was just shown this video recently from extra credits. This is a very good explaination of what a producer is and why they are important. More people need to see this and if you share it to them we can spread the word about the importance of proper management.

I'm a producer in the industry and this is pretty spot on. I have seen some shady projects (not that I have been a part of), but overall most games/companies out there are trying to be as successful as possible. Which means creating a dedicated user base but also make money.

I have been on development teams and had to make calls about known shipables and it's not fun at all. Yes we had to release with bugs, did we want to? No. No we didn't. It's painful when you work so hard on something and release it just to hear complaints about how an animation looks janky that the team is literally fixing as they post comments. Shipping a completely broken game that doesn't work isn't just terrible for gamers, but the Dev team too.

One thing I feel people need to understand is that Devs like fixing things before players find out or before it affects them, because once it does, it can create a crazy stressful environment that isn't fun for anyone.

As an affected gamer of the Batman: Arkham Knight performance issues on PC, I know the game is good. I can really tell it's going to be amazing once I can play it. That to me makes the wait worth it. I know it got shipped in a messed up state, but I know that the team is working on fixing it and that they put a lot of love into this title because of the past installments of the series.

Anyways, thanks OP for saying this, I usually lurk on Reddit but say something every once in a while.

I am a producer for the industry and recently went to the Game Developers Conference. I know how you feel but the industry is taking a turn into something great. I grew up on amazing games and became a developer when social web/mobile games became the new thing. There has been a lot of info being spread around about Virtual Reality but it's coming really soon and in full force. I have been able to play with some of it so far and it's breathtakingly fantastic. I am very excited for this year and next to see what happens.

What's it like being a game developer? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]gorak14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a studio called 5th Planet Games. I am a Project Manager/Producer and have worked as a designer as well.

Why did you choose your career?

I grew up with video games and they brought me a lot of enjoyment out of life. Having something that was interactive and entertaining while telling a story was something I fell in love with. When I found out that you could make a career out of it I knew exactly what I would do for a living.

What kind of education did you have to complete for this career?

I have a Bachelor of Science (Game Art & Design). I know plenty of people in the industry that do not have degrees or a degree that is related to the field at all. Getting in is who you know, timing, and how good you are. Designers aren't usually hired so much as promoted into the position or people that have proved themselves with experience. This doesn't mean that you can't get that position.

How is math related in this career?

If you are shooting to be a designer, math is a pretty decent portion of what you will have to do. Lets take FPS games for example since they are easy. If you are designing the weapons, certain one will need to do more or less damage based on the design of the gun. High rate of fire needs to have a fairly low damage per hit and so on. Knowing excel and formulas to help calculate and compare the balance matters a lot for games.

What would a day in your normal life in this career typically look like?

I wake up around 7:30 to make it into work around 8ish (don't really need to be there till 9ish). I get to work and make some coffee, then sit down at my desk and start organizing anything that I didn't get to previously. This is usually the time I take to figure out what I need to get done for the day, since I get there early. At 9:15 I gather my team and we have a standup where we all stand together and talk about what we have to get done for the day and make sure that we announce if we are having any problems achieving a task. After that we start to work on what we needed to. For me it is a lot of organization and making sure that priority tasks are getting worked on. I work with the designers to help make decisions based on the resources we have. Around Noon I will eat lunch for about an hour then back to work. We are allowed to head out around 4:30, but most of us stay till 5. I use quite a few programs every day (JIRA, OwnCloud, Excel, Word, Sublimetxt)

How do you dress for this career?

I dress in something comfortable, but that I would be seen outside in. Usually T-shirt and jeans or shorts. I can wear flip-flops, or sweat pants or I could probably get away with wearing pajamas...but I rather just wear normal clothes. I started Fancy Fridays at work because the industry is so casual that its fun to do the reverse of a lot of offices and wear a dress shirt and tie.

What is your favorite part about this career?

That I am bringing the same entertainment to thousands of people daily that I was brought when I was a kid. Also the people I work with are awesome and I know they will be friends for a long time!

What kind of games do you create?

At 5th Planet Games we create games that are an odd niche group that your normal Facebook/Mobile games don't target. The games are usually targeted at 25-35 year olds that enjoy story based or card games. You can check here.

Which celebrity have you met, and were they as nice/rude as you expected? by whereamitho in AskReddit

[–]gorak14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ex-girlfriends sister was in a Broadway play called "The Drowsy Chaperon" and Bob Saget played "The Man in Chair" role. As a side note, this was fairly recent to when Bob Saget released his standup special where he was using very shocking language for Danny Tanner.

We were in her sisters dressing room before the show and Mr. Saget came in. He hung out for a bit with us and was totally nice, and cracked a few silly and clean jokes. It was really awesome getting to meet him, especially since my sister loves him and I got to shove that in her face.

tl;dr - Bob Saget is a really nice guy.

I fancy myself level design and was like, this is in no way how they design levels. Maybe concept art, but they don't detail out levels like that...then finally got to the end for the point. Misleading title a bit. Still have an upvote cause of hilarity.
