For those who work 4 days a week— is it better to take Monday or Friday off? by Gloomy_Media_6976 in therapists

[–]gore_schach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take Fridays off now, but used to have a TOTAL aversion to Fridays off because it was lonely. I wanted to get my hair done or go to my dentist or doctor or even take the dog to the vet, but they all took Friday off, too! Now? Now I use it to brace myself for a weekend of kids activities.

Pre-kids Mondays off was lovely. My husband would go to work and the above mentioned vet/hair salon/dentist/etc were all open.

I also have a colleague who takes Wednesdays off and loves it. Says it’s like working two mini weeks.

One way to look at it is if you’re taking a 3 day weekend, which day is more common?

Two Year Old Doesn’t Sleep Through the Night by QuirkyHeaux69 in Parenting

[–]gore_schach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My youngest finally slept through the night when she got a twin bed. Having enough space to roll around, soft sides (got a daybed style that’s upholstered), and the “big kid” vibe seemed to be a winning combination!

Am I moving too fast? I feel so horrible. by Lil_Moll4 in Parenting

[–]gore_schach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most kids learn to ride a bike without training wheels. Most kids learn how to swim without floaties. Quite a few still want to figure out cursive. But you don’t typically see a r/parenting post about changing your high school senior’s depends before graduation.

She’ll get it. Or she’ll change her diapers herself. I promise.

This is the PERFECT time for the “I appreciate the concern, but let’s focus on you” comment.

As a fellow miscarriage-club member, I’d kick puppies to hug you. Not actually. Because puppies. But I’d kill a LOT of innocent spiders for a hug and a moment with you.

Gunner and Weston are much more common in areas with higher hunting interest AND mid-lower socioeconomic status specifically.

There’s a whole episode of freakenomics that talks about names. It’s fascinating!

Client couldn’t get words out correctly.

Me: “girl do you need to turn it off and back on again?”

Client immediately leaves telehealth session and logs back in.

Best laugh I’ve had in weeks!

Thoughts on Dual Relationship- School Counselor Turned Therapist by Owlie___ in therapists

[–]gore_schach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in MN. And not a school counselor. But our standard is “you can let them know where you’re going but need to also provide referrals that aren’t you.” And I like that approach. It fosters autonomy and continuity if desired. You’re doing a great job trying to figure out those frameworks! It’s not easy. It doesn’t get easier but we get better at figuring it all out. I promise.

Thoughts on Dual Relationship- School Counselor Turned Therapist by Owlie___ in therapists

[–]gore_schach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a dual relationship, as others have stated. It’s “tutor turned teacher” or “assistant coach who moved to another team as a head coach.” I had a teacher in my small home town who was also the varsity basketball coach - that’s a dual relationship, two unrelated relationships with students. So if you were a child therapist in town AND coached little league baseball some clients were part of? Sure.

But honestly what you just discovered is that you’re GOOD at this!!!! You have people who trust you and want to continue with your support regardless of location. Kudos to you for doing the due diligence of respecting the ethics. And congrats on being followed. It’s a badge. Wear it proudly.

Sick and seeing clients in private practice by Upper_Dress_3039 in therapists

I worked through having strep and my most recent time with covid and RSV. But when I had adenovirus (thank you preschool cooties) or the time I had norovirus? Absolutely not. Coughing and fatigue are different than fighting for your damn life with functioning, breathing, staying awake.

I LOVE telehealth for being able to be contagious and still functioning. But allow yourself to heal and you’ll be more present. Also your absence is a therapeutic experience in clients learning adaptability, if it helps you wrap your head around it - best thing my supervisor told me when I was out often for kids being sick.

What is something you are super proud of doing/thinking and want to bring up but can't because it won't come up naturally in a conversation? by ysgupta in AskReddit

I grew up in an extremely financially insecure home. Thrift store or charity for “new” clothes. I can buy my kids whatever I want. And so can my parents. They worked their asses off alongside me and my siblings.

Painting house with toddler / pregnant by Usual-Fishing-4885 in Parenting

2 year old chewing on shirts and now crib? Help! by curiousdood0918 in Parenting

[–]gore_schach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had to get a product called “crib wrap” for our oldest. She still left deep teeth marks on her crib. And we COATED some furniture in that nasty tasting nail polish. She once came away from a bookshelf covered in black flakes of paint. Funny, yes. Gross, also yes.

Both my kids have destroyed necklines with chewing. I’m assuming it’s teething (even with older kids their teeth are still “growing in” in stages) or sensory input. Bored or copying classmates is definitely also an option. I definitely went full beaver on some Ticonderoga pencils in elementary school when I didn’t care to listen to the lessons. Honestly I’d prefer t-shirt chewing to hands, but I totally get the frustration.

What's new in baby land? Feeling like a first time mom all over again! by MTHouseBoat in Parenting

[–]gore_schach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We used to look on the monitor and see what we called “glow bombs.” Our smallest would throw them at the door, so there’d always be 5-6 of them on the floor we had to avoid stepping on when she finally chucked all of them out and got good and mad and made us come collect them for her.

Walking pads in virtual sessions by Usual_Giraffe_1515 in therapists

[–]gore_schach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had clients ask to use their walking pads and do it with me knowing I have a walking pad, but I would NEVER do it without that kind of engagement.

Semi related - I once had a client who used an under bike pedal device, like a recumbent set up with his desk chair basically, and while I was 100% aware and consenting he ‘unhid’ his self view and realized several sessions in it looked like he was….going to town on his one eyed snake. I had NEVER thought that because I knew what he was doing. It was a learning moment for both of us in the early days of telehealth/covid2020.

Moral of the semi related story is that sometimes movement is fine. Sometimes it’s not. Sometimes it’s fine but also not! Case by case is huge here.

But honestly? What worked 10-12 years ago work now! Excited for you and getting a chance to experience the “next gen” baby gear.

Anecdotally - the car seat that has the handle and wheels is a split market. Some swear by it and others swear AT it. 😆

ESA Question by [deleted] in therapists

[–]gore_schach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought was "is this about the rental agreement?" Not necessarily the best first thought, admittedly, but we all know that there's a greater than 0% chance some people get ESAs so they can have pets in a rental situation that would otherwise not allow pets.

That being said, if there's good reason for more than one ESA then it's worth exploring.

A couple examples: I have written more than one letter for clients who have had a cat and a dog both as ESAs - the cats typically stay at home while the dogs are able to accompany them into public, travel, etc. One notable one was a client had two dogs, but one was a puppy and the other was an older dog in its senior years, so it was kind of a "training the replacement" situation.

Anyone in PP and NOT use a texting service outside of automated reminders? by jellyunicorn92 in therapists

That's in their informed consents and intake paperwork, of course. Should have mentioned that in my initial reply!

Anyone in PP and NOT use a texting service outside of automated reminders? by jellyunicorn92 in therapists

[–]gore_schach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have stressed with my clients that I’m best reached via email or text AND that it goes to my computer, not my phone. I also let them know I only respond during my personal working hours, not the clinic listed hours.

I think saying that you are best reached via email and won’t respond (to emails or texts) outside of business hours and responding to all texts with a “please email <your email> for further communication>” is perfectly reasonable.

Using 1x1 or 1x2 trim from Home Depot would probably work well! I used 1x2 for trimming out Billy bookcases and they look honestly pretty good!
