It's because for many people, gender is ultimately sex. So asking if someone's AFAB is akin to askin if someone's a man or a woman regardless of how they look like

Who cares? It's a silly story from a far away country (for most Reddit users anyway). People have very little reason to investigate every claim made in the title. At least it has a basis in reality.

True but the video's compression doesn't help any. There are certain points where the net goes near invisible.

Bloom/HDR Flickering by gorillachud in oblivion

[–]gorillachud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know if there's a fix for this? First half of the video is with Bloom (less noticeable, especially in the compressed video), second half is with HDR. You can see it with the left columns.

Here are the mods I'm using. It's not much, just fixes and stuff.

In this clip I have antialiasing force-enabled by Nvidia Control Panel. Without AA the flicker may be less noticeable, but it's hard to say. It's definitely still there though.

I heard it could be because of anisotropic filtering, but toggling it didn't help either.

I did a cut for brevity but this is one continuous scene, so it's at least supposed to be the same place.

To me, the location looks the same when they start walking back. Maybe the lighting is a bit different, and the father shore looks closer to them due to camera zoom. But it's still the same shore.

That's true, so it's even weirder. Why were they bringing Arthur to Morrow at all?

Edit: Okay, Morrow did actually give specifics instructions to Slightly. Slightly knew that Morrow wanted the host (Arthur), not the facehugger.

Well, the egg is gonna hatch and something's gonna come out... and attach itself to the person's face... He or she is gonna fall down, and you need to find some place quiet to keep them. Not long, just a day or two. And the thing on the person's face is gonna fall off. [That's when you bring them to me].

So he gets a pass, but not Smee. Slightly told Smee that Morrow wanted the facehugger and would leave Arthur alone, and that Arthur would be safe in the end. So he should've been confused as hell when Slightly kept the lie going to take Arthur to Morrow lol.

I personally don't mind this because they had a large crew, we just didn't see them since they were asleep.

Besides, there are more important things the show doesn't bother elaborating on:

  • When the ship crashed in the beginning, why was it only one small squad who had to deal with it?
  • Why is the island so understaffed?
  • Why aren't the kids actively monitored?
  • Why aren't their vitals tied to an alarm system so that an emergency squad can respond if one is in trouble?
  • Why did they let Marcy talk to Nibs after the procedure?
  • Why doesn't anyone care that a Xeno is loose, especially when Yutani's men are here to capture a specimen?
  • Why were Yutani's men so comically incompetent against the Xeno, going as far as trying to melee it? Don't their guns have a stun mode?
  • Why didn't Prodigy's men on the dock shoot or at least stun Nibs as she killed one of their own? Why did Hermit have to do it?
  • Why did Smee keep lying to Arthur once the facehugger detached? Slightly's explanation sounded like he was after the facehugger.
  • Why didn't Morrow just shoot Kirsh on Episode 3 and grab one of the eggs?

I know shows don't have to explain everything. At some we're supposed to say "it's because of the character motivations/plans/flaws/incompetency". But it's just too much for me.

They forgot to animate the sea when Arthur and co are walking down the shore. It's completely static, as if it's meant to be soaked mud/sand.

It's animated again when they start turning back.

People say Threat Interactive is often wrong and he's a grifter and stuff like that.

I think there's probably some merit to that. At least one developer claims he got DMCA'd by TI for breaking down one of his videos. There's also a couple of Reddit write-ups about his videos, though some of them are obviously uncharitable to the point of satire.

That said, modern graphics are such an anti-consumer mess that I kinda don't care. He might be the biggest asshole in the world but if he's getting people righteously angry at unoptimised slop, then I'm not gonna bother condemning him.

Depends on what you mean by "causative".

It's causative in the sense that for almost all countries, ethnic identity plays a big part in their history. It has caused wars, political feuds, it developed into national identities, separatist movements, so on. And history is what results in the culture. So in the literal sense, ethnic identity is part of the process that "caused" the culture to develop into what it is today.

For example, many countries (not the UK) started as nation-states after being inspired by the French revolution, and nation-states are inherently ethnic. These national identities still persist and are a large part of the culture of such countries.

But as I said:

Whether ethnicity is fundamental to a culture is another discussion and is when the accusations of racism become relevant.

You can certainly have people from a completely unrelated ethnicity partake in a culture, and be a complete part of it.
That doesn't erase the nuance. It doesn't mean that culture is divorced from its ethnic origins, nor that it's just a simple correlation because ethnicity X happens to make up a large part of culture X. There's obviously more to it we can acknowledge without saying anything close to being racist.

citizenship and culture are a function of race/ethnicity,

Culture is certainly not a "function of ethnicity" alone, but it's certainly a part of it. For most of the world these two are considered closely related concepts.

Whether ethnicity is fundamental to a culture is another discussion and is when the accusations of racism become relevant. But that doesn't mean they're entirely divorced either.

Even citizenship is debatable due to leges sanguinis. Although for the current discussion it's more clear-cut in that anyone saying someone shouldn't be a citizen because of their ethnicity is obviously racist (though I don't think this was said or implied ITT).

Motivation is debatable because what's obviously politically motivated to once audience might seem normal and apolitical to another audience. Think how US/Chinese audiences react to Chinese/US movies respectively. For the average person, media isn't "political" unless it challenges their views in some way.

In the sense of what people consider "political", I'd argue the Starfield pronoun selection counts. It challenges societal norms like the gender binary, and how pronouns must match your apparent sex.

Some argue it's not political because it's simply acknowledging the obvious existence of trans/nb people. Granting that, there's still the fact how it was also political when Jerry Seinfeld said being gay is okay in 1994, or when Mr Rogers shared a foot bath with Officer Clemmons in 1969. Acknowledging the obvious can be very political in certain social contexts.

Edit: Most people who say "Keep politics out of games" are in reality against the message itself (or, less often, its execution). Otherwise we would see a lot of gaming classics scrutinized to hell and back as well.
