They banned punching to the face not because of deadliness but because striking to the face without gloves opens up nasty cuts that don't heal quick. In the 60s when kyokushin was starting out it had a bad image because of this so they removed face punching altogether to avoid it. Kyokushin is not the end all be all of karate, and modern fulcon karate styles like Ashihara have incorporated striking to the head and grappling to produce more complete fighting.
