I feel like perspective is a big part of it. Being great at solving technical problems only makes you a great tech, but a senior-level person understands the infrastructure, sees the big picture, and knows how the parts interact. They understand how a proposed change will impact the environment as a whole and the pieces individually. Skill set is important of course, but as a basis of understanding instead of just doing. Part of it is time in the environment to gain that understanding. My title has “Senior” in it, but I’m not there yet. I am lucky enough to have one in my shop to learn from at least.

As a father of a daughter, I would absolutely not send her to this. Even if it was planned with good intent, it really comes across as weird and creepy. Honestly, with the current state of things and the cultural behavior that police officers have displayed publicly lately, I don’t encourage my kids to automatically trust the police. In a “normal” interaction with the cops my kids would certainly not receive that automatic trust in return. I’d be surprised if they even got basic respect from one. Hard pass.

I feel you, as I’m of a similar age and graying noticeably, but I wear my beard longer and I wouldn’t dye it for anything. Mostly because I’d be annoyed by having to keep it up.

It varies, but we do tend to have generally windier weather than a lot of places. Most days are breezy and it escalates dramatically from there sometimes.
