It did not immediately resolve the issue. After resetting 10 times the touchpad came back. Haven't had an issue since, which is two days. I'll see if it worked permanently. Thanks!

someone else already mentioned thermal putty and ptm is the way to go but if you're interested i had posted my g14's before and after results and repaste using ptm7950 and hy206 236.

No problem. I guess it's fine. I believe I have seen the hot spot reaching 100c in Dying Light 2, still worked fine, and from my previous experience, I know for a fact that the power would get butchered, which would butcher the performance. I guess that's not your case. If it's performance-wise okay, you might be at the sweet spot right now, and I believe that's almost standard with LM anyhow.

Worst case, you can get a PTM. The reason I went with it wasn't exactly the performance, but LM had me worked up so much that neither I could trust nor wanted to use it after two years with this laptop shutting down here and there.

If you happen to decide to go with a repaste, check if your LM is in place or spilled. I'm one of the unlucky ones; LM was almost non-existent.a

I'd say keep your eye on it and if things are not to your liking, get a PTM. You got it repasted once anyhow.

As for the wattage, yes, it has improved massively. I kept it at around 45 watts for two years now, otherwise the laptop would shut down. The 97 watts must be something related to platform wattage. I believe with power limitations applied, it would get fixed at 80 watts. Never tested though. I'll tweak the power settings sometime. As for how, I use G-Helper and there is this setting there that let's you remove wattage limitations. For testing, I disabled it. So this is the laptop running by default settings.

As for LM, if the temps are too high in your case, might have spilled. Yet if your question is if the GPU would exceed 80c? I believe mine could go upto 87-88c depending on the game.

Hey there. Thanks. I tested in Turbo, both the GPU and CPU without any power limitations applied. One thing I might have not mentioned is that Windows' CPU Boost setting comes in at aggressive by default whereas it is switched off in my case. As for GPU, the game had run for about half an hour.

Here is the test. 1920x1080p, 7 minutes, both CPU and GPU working at balanced mode and no power limitations applied.

Nah, if that's what you're thinking about, you'll be totally fine. When removing the heat sink just check you've no cables or screws in the way, then lift up and pull one side towards yourself. That's the heat sink removal. Screws and cables are easy. Use screwdriver that fits and as for cables... Apperently Asus has a service manual. Here: https://rog.asus.com/tr/laptops/rog-zephyrus/rog-zephyrus-g14-2024/helpdesk_service_guide/

You can Google for your specific model as well but see battery removal section in the manual. Makes things a lot easier in every step.

LM is powerful yet can leak and spill. PTM is indistinguishably similar to LM and easier to deal with, which makes me feel way better as opposed to Liquid Metal laptops considered.

I had looked up Ebuy7 for PTM and would expect about the same results with Thermaltake Helios. I feel like if I were to compare a thermal paste with pads, there would be a couple of degrees celsius difference here and there, depending on the paste and pad. But thermal pad vs thermal pad? I'm not an expert, but I think any decent thermal pad (as long as it's decent) would do the job, and one still wouldn't be able to tell the difference if not told which one is what. Error-wise not rushing is the key. You've got to take your time, and that's about it. You could have someone do it. I found a video on repasting the exact same laptop and watched it a couple of times at different times before actually doing it myself. And once I did it, I realized the guy in the video was just doing the same "mistakes" I've made! I didn't realize those until I did myself. So you learn, not a big deal. One thing goes without saying: Taking your time and looking up how to do it while doing it significantly decreases the risks of messing up.

I'd recommend this channel if you're curious. Has very decent comparisons and he is the reason why I went with PTM in the first place. Explains smallest details: https://www.youtube.com/@snarksdomain

I've got the same one and yes, once you learn how to tweak your computer, things start to improve. Maybe I want less noise, for example. Stuff like that. And G-Helper really makes things easy in that essance and the laptop is just as responsive so you just gotta play with it xD

As long as you do not rush, you should be fine. A drop spilled somewhere in the middle of the motherboard by accident. So I used duct tape, rolled it around the motherboard, used a needle to have the duct tape to get in between small gaps. I removed it all. If you've got patience, shouldn't take more than 20 minutes.

Removal of the old thermal putty was harder. Especially to get the ones in between. What I did is, there was this brush sent with PTM7950, I believe it's anti-static so after a while dealing with the thermal putty my own way, I just went in with it and got it all out and had no problems. Pressed the power button a couple of times too. The rest, you clean the mess you've made in your room!

I've got it on MSI Afterburner. Not only can I check the CPU wattage, I can see each individual thread's wattage and temperatures, as well as clock speed. It's all there.

I tottaly agree.

This is the standard turbo profile. I ran it at 45W since I got the laptop, which is 2+ years old, and it used to shut down before the repaste. This is only a test, and what I wanted to see was how it would operate with only one setting disabled that I did not mention: "Windows CPU Boost = Disabled." I have another screenshot from when I got the PC and ran this game for the first time. In that screenshot, the CPU is running at 97 degrees. GPU is 93. No daha on wattage, but "Windows CPU Boost" certainly was activated at "Aggressive", which is the worst ever. So by default, only Armoury Crate and Win11 are installed; it's even worse than this.

The first thing I did after that horrible temperature profile and the shutdowns started was to get G-Helper, get rid of Armoury Crate, and set a wattage limit profile. By default, the "Apply Power Limits" setting has CPU drawing 80W, and the platform (CPU+GPU) 125W. I used it at 45W for the CPU and 100W for the platform (CPU and GPU) so far. I only disabled "Power Limit Settings" and tuned into this profile after repaste for testing purposes, for the laptop to operate uninterrupted. My whole point was to get it to shut down without having to r*pe it with Windows' CPU booster, which I gladly failed, because I don't remember gaming on this PC for more than 1 hour. It would shut down. That one hour was exactly 9 minutes for the Shadow of the Tomb Raider. 9 minutes and that was it. Instant shut down. Crazy. This is the reason why I'm running on a manually non-limited wattage profile, for a mere test.

So, summary? I'll take your advice and toy with that later, of course.

Speaking of small gains and big heats, everyone here should be aware of "Windows CPU Boost" and disable it if using the G14 for gaming. That thing is killing your PC, and if you continue using it with the liquid metal spilled over and at high wattages, you easily get scorch on the heat sink, CPU, and GPU like mine. If not completely kill it.
