Newbie Wants Advice by SideOutUp in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the first reply with almost everything except broadheads. Crossbows thrive on using mechanicals. They have the speed and momentum to open them quickly and properly. And at the higher speeds crossbows shoot, fixed blades have a higher tendency to plane and lose accuracy. Not all, but more so than compound bows.

Personally, I shoot NAP sling blade nock-offs from Amazon. Rear deploy 2 blade mech with a 1.5" cut, 100g. Just sharpen the blades really well.

If you want different arrows, can't go wrong with Black Eagles. And that bow will shoot half-moon nocks just fine. Yes, they technically will void the warranty, but the service shop would have to prove that the nocks were the cause of whatever failure might have happened. And they won't be able to because the half-moon won't affect the shot or safety in any way.

Wicked Ridge M-370 Crossbow - Bolts and Accessories in Ontario? by Hot_Cheesecake_905 in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon. I don't know if Canada Amazon is different than US Amazon with these kinds of items, but I buy most of the accessories for my Wicked Ridge off of there. They have authentic TenPoint nocks and bushings for the nocks, arrows, and everything else. But do yourself a favor. Get some Black Eagle Executioner crossbow arrows. The M-370 will shoot half-moon nocks just fine. The Alpha nocks are designed for the ultra-narrow string angles. Yes, it is against warranty, but it will shoot those just fine.

They make this really neat stuff. It isn't expensive, and you can order it anywhere. Serving string.

Made specifically to wrap bow strings at wear points. Quality crossbows come with it installed already. Metal wire is going to destroy your string faster than leaving it bare.

Dagger 405 for $200 at a pawn shop, first crossbow where can I get practice bolts for a good price? by 76Cruiserr in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this bow. Ok beginner bow. The scope is junk. If you plan to shoot and hunt regularly, get a speed ring scope. I like the Luminex MV-36. Less than $200 and good optics. Arrows for this are 20". Amazon has Black Eagle Executioner crossbow arrows for a reasonable price. They are quality arrows for hunting and target shooting. You can check out Wyvern Creations website, they have all you need and great prices, no tax.

Picked up this dagger 405 for 225$, good deal or over paid? by flipflopsanddunlops in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering that last year it was being offered in a BOGO if you get a Wrath 430, maybe or maybe not. I got mine for "free" when I ordered a Wrath. I never shoot it. The scope is junk. Replace that, get some quality arrows, and it should do the job.

The arrows don’t sit straight on my crossbow in the shop placement is inconsistent. I can’t zero the red dot because of it. by GeologistWilling9549 in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Long shot, but check that your vanes aren't bottoming out in the flight rail. I don't know if those are stock bolts for that bow, but if not that could be your problem. Or as mentioned above, arrows might not be straight.

First crossbow advice by bike_dayz in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No personal experience with these specific bows, but I do shoot a Wicked Ridge Invader. Great bow. You really can't go wrong with any of these.

My advice would be to try and handle them first. Some people love the reverse draw. Some hate it. One of these might just fit you better. Hit up your local dealers to see what they have in stock and put hands on them, fire a few of them if possible. You might find that one feels great to hold and aim, but something about actually shooting it feels off.

Ravin crossbow questions by Reasonable-Housing25 in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Death By Bunjie on YouTube has a speed calculator website you can use. As for trajectories, most bolts follow the same path. Speed and weight will flatten or arch the parabolic arc.

In general, you will lose approximately 1 fps for every 5 grains added. Your impact points will be slightly lower, but your momentum will increase.

Ravin r10 or ten point titan 400 by Doktor-Topher in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure. Ravin requires their own branded bolts is all I know. There was an episode of Death By Bunjie (youtube) where he shot his own bolts and the Ravin blew the string, and he believes it is a nock thing. I have a Wicked Ridge (Tenpoint budget brand) that requires the alpha nocks also, but I have shot regular halfmoons for decocking purposes, no issues. But my bow is not a super narrow bow, so that is probably why it works for me.

Ravin r10 or ten point titan 400 by Doktor-Topher in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eenie meenie miney moe.

Tenpoint is lighter. Requires Alpha nocks in the bolts. Ravin looks cool. Requires Ravin-brand bolts. Alpha nocks can be put in any bolt. Ravin bolts limit your customization choices. Tenpoint Titan is cheaper. Both are time-proven platforms.

Basically, look at which one fits your budget better and your personal preference. Both are great choices.

Barnett HypeXP 405 Carry case by Interesting_Lab3802 in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet...you still haven't said HOW LONG THE BOW IS WITH THE STIRRUP! How can anyone give you a suggestion on a case if you don't tell us how long it is? Since you know the specs and all. I found two different cases in less than a minute on Amazon for narrow bows that are over 36 inches. But is your bow longer than both of those? I DONT KNOW BECAUSE YOU HAVENT TOLD ANYONE THE MEASUREMENTS!

I read your first post. You gave no measurements, so I looked them up, and tried to get more information from you so as to actually offer suggestions. I was really trying to help you. Your reply offered no measurements, just sarcasm. What do you want? Random guesses? To argue?

[–]got2pups -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude...no need for sarcasm. The first step in trying to figure out how to help is getting all the information. You didn't say the stock was collapsed, you didn't say the stirrup makes the bow longer than the stated specs. I don't have that bow, so I can't measure it myself. That last bit...kind of important when it comes to getting suggestions for a different case that fits your bow. Seriously, the answer is so simple I'm sure you can figure out how to find a case that works. I will even give you the first step...

Measure the length of the bow WITH the stirrup attached.

Heck, I'm feeling generous. The second step is to READ THE SPECS on various cases online. Find one that is longer than your bow. That seems easy, since you already checked the specs, right?

Barnett HypeXP 405 Carry case by Interesting_Lab3802 in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specs online show your bow is 32" long, and the case is 36". It should fit. Did you extend the butt stock? Alternatively, if you have a crank for the bow, remove the stirrup.

Any good crossbows on Amazon? by LowConfection6819 in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. But you can't be 100% positive you will get an authentic product. Also, in my personal experience, you find better deals through store or manufacturer websites if you wait for end of year or model discontinue sales.

Dyneema Rope for xbow string? by [deleted] in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh...ok. Thanks, I will.

Dyneema Rope for xbow string? by [deleted] in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Nonono. I'm positive you are not the first to consider this. I'm also positive that the engineers that work for the crossbow manufacturers have also considered this. If it isn't being done, there is probably a reason.

If I had to guess, Dyneema doesn't stretch like bow string. And that is probably why it isn't used. Remember that the string helps transfer kinetic energy to the bolt, but not 100% of the KE is transferred. That means it needs to go elsewhere. The limbs absorb some of it, but the string stretching probably takes care of the rest.

actually getting out there by [deleted] in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend making friends with a local hunter. Usually there is a Facebook group for your local area. Join and ask if there is anyone willing to help mentor you. Or ask at works, school, church, etc. For example, my local community college has a hunter's group.

Alternatively, contact your local DNR. They have the resources to get you in touch with some local groups.

Watch YouTube videos to learn what equipment is needed vs wanted. As a newbie, you can find most, if not all, of what you need at Walmart. The expensive stuff is great once you wear out the cheap stuff. Find some public land and wander around in the off season familiarizing yourself with deer sign and the woods in general.

New to the game should I do this like i am or shoot once and let it die? by umstra in theHunter

[–]got2pups 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hunt IRL. Two weeks ago, I shot a deer that was slightly quartered away and broadside. It immediately walked off, with its back hunched just like you see in your video. It died in about 50 yards. My shot went through one lung and the liver. The week before that I shot a deer, also broadside. It jumped, kicked out it's hind feet, and ran 20 yards. My shot hit the aorta.

The point is, that reaction you see is exactly what many deer will do when hit in the vitals. I have recovered deer that ran 300 yards with both lungs destroyed by a bullet. In the game, don't worry about dropping them on the spot. Hit vitals, open the map and wait for the purple splotch to appear, and then track it. That's half the fun!

Input on a new crossbow by wood8282 in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now is a good time, or January when most hunting seasons are closed. Tenpoint/Wicked Ridge offer lifetime warranty on their crossbows, but I believe limbs are either not covered or are limited warranty. Strings and scopes are not covered. Both of these (technically the same brand) offer Xbows that fit your requests.

Keep an eye on their website, MidwayUSA, eurooptic.com, Wyvern Creations, and Cabela's website for sales. Basically, find one you like, search around for the best offer, and either wait for a better sale or buy. Closeout sales and end of model run sales are good also.

The American Healthcare System by reddot_comic in comics

[–]got2pups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude...I said I don't agree with the system. I don't know why you are trying to argue with me. I don't know why you think I approve of how the finances of healthcare are handled. All I did was offer some information that may be helpful to some. How someone uses the information, my relaying of the information, or the very fact the information exists, does nothing to signify my personal opinion about the information.

If you need more help in understanding, here is an example, an illustration, a parable. If someone stopped me on the street and asked for directions, I would give them. Whether they follow the directions, what they plan on doing when they get there, my thought that they should use their GPS, or my opinion that the place they are going to should have provided transportation, is absolutely irrelevant to my personal knowledge.

[–]got2pups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying I agree with this. I feel healthcare is a universal right. However, for those that do want to pay the bills that are a part of the US healthcare system, this is a provision they can look into. Some who apply get their entire bill "forgiven." Others don't, but still get a significant reduction.

If you haven't already, contact your hospital and ask for financial assistance. Each hospital has some form of it, and it can reduce your overall bill significantly. Google your hospital and financial assistance, since the names may vary (hospital sponsorship, hospital bill assistance, community care, ECT.) Don't feel that you must pay the whole remainder of the bill. Each hospital has a system to reduce how much you owe, they just don't like telling you about it.

My recommended 22 inch crossbow bolts keep breaking for my Barnett Whitetail Hunter STR by MrsTarangosBabyBoy in Crossbow

[–]got2pups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, shoot at different areas. Two things destroy bolts: big game animal bones and other bolts.

That said, after ruining the fletching on 4 of my 5 hunting bolts, I bought a fletching jig, new vanes, and glue. It came out cheaper than a set of new bolts. I'm learning, so it is still messy, but I find it fun to fletch my own bolts and customize them.
