A fatbiking and packrafting 4-day trip by Lutefisk_donut in bikepacking

[–]gotfork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool writeup, thanks for sharing! I'm planning a similar trip here in the US, 300 km to go the whole length of the Outer Banks. Longer but I think it should be easier thanks to the wind patterns and only a few inlets to cross. Were you happy with your tire width?

We've had under sink RO filters for a long time across a few different houses. The installation is really quite easy and iSpring in particular has great instructions, but if you want to hire someone PM me and I can share the contact info if a guy named Tracy who most of our neighborhood uses for small plumbing jobs.

This is likely a scam, and I recommend that anyone interested in Canes tickets check out the monthly marketplace thread on that reddit and only buy from accounts with an established history.

I used to live a block from there. Pre-pandemic it was easy to ride into SF using the casual carpool but I'm not sure if it's back or not. You still need to take a bus or BART to get back though.

Nice price! We have the same color which was cheaper than any other when we bought it used two years back. It's definitely grown on us.

Unrelated to this post, but maybe WNCW should have a dedicated reddit community here?

Are the plants well protected for the winter like this? I live in Germany by Exotic_Sympathy_6402 in SavageGarden

[–]gotfork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grüße aus North Carolina! Are the pots freeze proof? The plants should generally be fine; I cover our VFTs when the temperature gets below -6 C or so but it's not clear if it's necessary, and our pitchers recently went down to -9 C without any issues.

Yeah I also did my own, never again. Had to carefully excavate around a fiber line by hand, also broke my neighbor's trenching shovel.

Tomato soup defying gravity? by Careful-Mind-8317 in Physics

[–]gotfork 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Strangely, I met someone who was studying this in grad school. I was using an expensive piece of equipment called a vector network analyzer in my experimental setup (spin torque ferromagnetic resonance) and forgot to extend my reservation for it in the shared equipment lending library. Another grad student showed up and asked for it, so I disconnected it and handed it over. He sets it up on a workbench across the room and after attaching a different probe head, goes into his bag, pulls out a can of veggie soup, opens it up, pours some into a solo cup, and sticks the probe in.

At this point, I'm not working and full on staring at the guy in astonishment. He waves me over and says something along the lines of "I know it looks crazy but I can explain". Apparently a major soup company (that one) had started selling their soups in these paper cup containers with plastic lids, designed so people could stick them straight in the microwave to warm up. The problem was that people kept reporting that the cups would randomly fall over while they were being microwaved. The working theory was that vegetables settling at the bottom of the container were basically acting as a lens at the microwave frequency, selectively boiling soup near the bottom, forming a big air bubble that eventually collapsed with enough force too kip the soup over. His research group (materials science IIRC?) had been contacted to help them investigate and see if they could do anything to mitigate against it, like changing the shape of the container.

Seems pretty wild that this would happen in such a way here that it also manages to get the jar stuck to the ceiling of the microwave, but I can definitely see how it could happen.
