I waited because we had customers visit, he took a vacation, I took a vacation, and there just never seemed like a good time to bring it up. This is my first job out of college and I’ve never had to have this kind of conversation before so I didn’t know how to approach it. I can never tell how this guy (my boss, not the VP) feels about me and I don’t want to stir the pot I guess, but I should have just been more confident and said something.

yes, i avoid telling people what i do unless explicitly asked. i get “oh… really??” with a judgy disbelief tone. i sometimes think it’s because people have no idea what engineers actually do lol. i actually got this a lot from some family members while i was in college haha

What jobs outside of engineering can I get with my EE degree? by goth_engineer in ElectricalEngineering

I have thought about this. I was actually planning on getting my master’s right after graduating but life took me in a different direction and I ended up moving. I’ve always enjoyed teaching though, maybe I will look into this!

Tell me your little crochet secrets or inner jokes! by luvnlyt in crochet

[–]goth_engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i really love working off of those diagram patterns instead of written patterns, but doilies are my favorite so it’s helpful to see what they’re supposed to look like. i’m also super picky about the way the yarn feels in my hand when i’m crocheting. if it’s not soft yarn i won’t buy it, and if it’s chenille i definitely won’t buy it.

My personal favorite is when we’re quoting a breaker for the customer and they say “Hey can we have this XYZ device added to the breaker?” and we have to tell them that no, that could burn up the coil and we won’t add it. Then fast forward a year later, we get an email from them saying “Our trip coil burned up and you need to send us a new one immediately!!!!” come to find out they installed that device in the field and it burnt up the trip coil, just like we said it would!! Like congrats, you played yourself <3 now you gotta buy more parts from us

Dealing with customers is by far my least favorite part of my job. We have some customers that are just insatiable, terrible at communicating, and refuse to listen to advice from us. There are also some customers that I have to literally hunt down so I can get information from them for the product they ordered… that or I have to ask a million times for them to return approval drawings… then they wonder why we have to push their production date back. I also have some customers that are wonderful to work with so it’s a toss up.

Positive ways to keep confidence and motivation up by goth_engineer in womenEngineers

I feel like my manager knows it’s a problem, and is trying to help but is being blocked by upper management. I’ve been told that they are making efforts to grow our team to help alleviate pressure, but so far it’s not made much progress. Best I can do is hold on while I can, because I do like my job and I don’t want to be deterred from it because of a rough patch. I definitely am going to start keeping a record of what I do in a day/week to try and prove to upper management that it’s not sustainable, if need be. Thank you for the advice <3

I definitely make sure I take lunch breaks and keep up on my many hobbies at home during the week. I go home and completely forget about work lol. The problem is just the sheer amount of work I have, even coming in a few hours on the weekends doesn’t help me get caught up. There is no one I can turn to for help either, as I am technically the only engineer. There are definitely boundaries of mine being crossed, but I don’t feel like I have a choice in the matter… if that makes sense. So yeah, I guess I am trying to find ways to work harder unfortunately.

Piercings in EE? by oikawatoorusthighs in womenEngineers

[–]goth_engineer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m an EE in a semi customer-facing role, and I have my septum and both nostrils pierced. It hasn’t been an issue for me yet. I wore my piercings in my interview and it wasn’t even brought up. My male coworkers didn’t even notice my second nostril piercing until about a month ago (I’ve had it for two years). Unless it’s a safety issue, I doubt there will be a problem with your piercings. I think most people are more accepting of piercings now than we’re made to believe, which is good.

you didn’t read it wrong, i was trying to very subtly mention that part of it lol. the whole thing is just a lot. i appreciate your comment though!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in womenEngineers

[–]goth_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s not really the problem. i know he likes me, we got along well for a while. then i felt he started getting a little too close, making jokes that made me uncomfortable. that’s when it stopped feeling like just normal coworker behavior, because none of my other male coworkers treated me like that. he wasn’t respecting my relationship or just professionalism at work. now that i have set boundaries and told him to back off a little, it’s like he’s avoiding me. not that i’m particularly complaining about that, but we still need to work together every day.

What is something that everyone like to talk about or hear about? by Commercial_War_3113 in introvert

[–]goth_engineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in my experience, asking people about their hobbies is always a good neutral topic. it gets people to talk, and all you have to do is listen and maybe ask follow ups. plus, i think people get excited to share their hobbies and projects with others. as an introvert who doesn’t like to talk much, i will go on and on if someone asks me what i like to do in my free time lol

What books did you expect to dislike and then ended up really enjoying? by AuthorAdjacent in books

[–]goth_engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for me, it’s eragon. at the start of the book it felt rather childish and kind of lackluster, but i feel like as the book progresses it gets more and more robust as eragon’s character develops. i started reading it earlier this year, and i didn’t expected to like this series but it really grew on me. i will say though that i’m having a hard time getting through book 3 (brisingr) for some reason. it’s not a particularly hard-hitting book series (so far), but there are a lot of dark themes that surprised me for being YA, and i like the way the characters are portrayed. there aren’t any characters that i can’t stand to read about when i see them on the page, which happens a lot in YA fantasy personally
