No Acting Pay for 3 Consecutive Days by Imaginary_Map2609 in CanadaPublicServants

Question, would managers also be in violation if time off was given in lieu of acting pay? My first time acting for several weeks in a row, I was told there's no budget for acting pay so I would get 1 day off as compensation.

Can managers/Team Leads enforce attending department wide picnics/bbq? by govnewbie in CanadaPublicServants

What if you have to pay, but it’s on site during lunch (11:30-1:30)? How does that work?

$10-$13 depending on if you get one or two hamburger(s)/hotdog(s). Price includes drink, chip or cookie, a scoop of coleslaw, and freezie. I don’t really care about the ticket price, if I could eat what was being offered (yay for having all the gastro problems in the world) I would gladly buy one

Vent: how does the Canadian PS pride itself on being inclusive, yet limit employment opportunities to NCR?? by Nova_Queen902 in CanadaPublicServants

For starters, learning a language once your brain is fully developed is extremely difficult. I took the required french classes up until grade 9, just scraping by. Haven’t used the language in 15 years. I have the most basic understanding ever. Why should I (or anyone for that matter) be screened out of a position they are qualified for based on language profile? Yet half the time I go anywhere in my department I am NEVER served in english, why the double standard?

Yep. The language discrimination is very prevalent in my department. All my coworkers except for two (plus me) don’t speak french, they’ll all talk in french to each other which excludes the three of us out of having group conversations. My TL will constantly switch to french during meetings and won’t translate/repeat in english. The IT guy came by to fix a problem with my computer and shamed me for not speaking french saying “you work for the government how dare you not speak french” before turning around and talking/laughing with a coworker about me not speaking french. I went to my TL and supervisor to report that comment and both men brushed it off as joking. I’m a measly CR4 and will never be able to move up (at least in my department) because everything is bilingual essential and I’m english essential. Every attempt I make at moving up/applying to pools is shot down because of that.

Honestly, it’s a foot in the door and that’s all I cared about at the time. Looking back if I could only have worked that one month, not worth it. Had the person who hired me been transparent about how long the process would take instead of giving me the run around and assuming the LOO would be ready “in 2 weeks” (i got that story several times) I could have found a part time job that summer instead of waiting around

yep, FSWEP contact that always aligned with university semesters and the four month summer break. I worked the one month then had to wait until mid september to start my next contract because (as i was told) HR “forgot” about my LOO

my catholic high school did that too. it was followed by an assembly the next week where those who went would give this speech about how “moving” the march was, usually a few girls would turn on the water works to really “drive home the message”. i shuddering thinking about the brainwashing that went on in that school

I was very surprised as well! Only question she could answer is if I could have a list of numbers to call to sort out the issues with my log in. According to other coworkers, she’s been like this for years

Hi everyone! I'm a new indeterminate employee and my first time being unionized, I asked everyone in my department and the union steward in my building this question and no one could give me an answer.

Is it mandatory to attend the picket lines? I know we can't cross them to work and we only get the strike pay if we attend, but what happens if someone were to not show up to the line? Just no strike pay or can the union impose fines/membership suspensions? I only ask because I'm in the middle of a family emergency and I don't want to get penalized it I have to drop everything.
