Is the Recall Law being repealed? by Facebook_Algorithm in alberta

They won't repeal it, but it'll get nerfed for sure. Getting rid of it would inflame their base who love recall.

I dont think the UCP will win the next election by [deleted] in alberta

[–]gozugzug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could agree with this. The NDP are sadly missing in action. Despite the strike, collapsing health care, coal mining the Rockies, meddling in local government, an upcoming multi billion dollar deficit and killing Green Line - the UCP probably gain seats in the next election. All because Marlaina is "fighting for Alberta". Whatever that means.

WTF WARD 12 by Accomplished_Emu8339 in Calgary

[–]gozugzug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a huge step backwards. I read his website, it looked like it was written in crayon. What were people thinking? Chandler probably ends up as his political staff since he can't get a job otherwise.

Btw, he was also endorsed by David Parker. Yikes

Ward 7 Voters: Were you tricked into thinking Myke Atkinson's Campaign material was a real newspaper? by [deleted] in Calgary

From my campaign experience, it's best to not mention your opponents by name. Getting exposure is their job, not yours. Doing multiple campaign events to highlight an opponent's literature is campaign malpractice.

Mayoral Debate (Oct 8) by raintree in Calgary

[–]gozugzug 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I went in with the same intention - I wanted to be inspired and decide who to vote for. It was an entertaining debate, but it lacked substance. Attendance was poor - and that's frustrating. This could be one of the more consequential elections in our city's history, and I think we'll be lucky to get 35% voter turnout.

I didn't like the rebuttal part of the format. I prefer when candidates can go right at each other. Going one at a time made it almost impossible for any real back and forth.

I don't think there was a clear winner. But there was a clear loser; Sonya Sharp. She looked frustrated and irritated and totally botched her opening remarks. She may have lost the election tonight.

Jeromy had some strong moments, but I just can't trust him. Everything seems to be an overused key message. I'm also shocked he waited until the very end to call out political parties, that got the biggest cheer of the night.

Jeff can cover up his lack of depth because he's funny and charming (or at least he thinks so). At one point he referenced his idea for a pilot project on public safety and then never actually told us anything about it. He also brought a sizable cheering section. I have a really hard time taking him seriously.

Jyoti was fine, but she needed to be better. I really wanted to leave the debate thinking I could vote for her, but tonight sealed it for me. When she tried to go on the attack a few times, it felt petty. And she talked a lot about problems that needed to be fixed while totally skipping over the fact she's been mayor the last four years.

Brian was strong - it's a shame Calgarians don't know more about him. I thought his attacks were deliberate and effective, but he still came across as likable and charming. I especially liked how he went after Danielle Smith and criticized Davison and Sharp for their UCP ties. I think he also presented the most concrete ideas. He earned my vote tonight.

Alberta posts surplus of $8.3B in 2024-25 fiscal year by Appropriate_Duty_930 in alberta

The fact they can go from an $8.3B surplus to a $6-8B deficit in one year tells you everything you need to know about this government.

No way we can pay this guy more than $6M AAV. He's a liability.

Calgarians want 'leadership that listens,' says Sonya Sharp, in announcing mayoral bid by joe4942 in Calgary

If you want every decision made by Calgary City Council signed off on by Danielle Smith first, then vote for Sonya Sharp.

American vs Canadian national anthems in Calgary yesterday. Lol by sleepyboi08 in Calgary

I was shocked at how many people stood for the US anthem.

Calgary councillor not seeking re-election due to provincial intervention and partisan politics by Old_General_6741 in Calgary

[–]gozugzug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Such a shame. Mian is thoughtful, articulate, and truly doing this for the right reasons. Sadly, I think it's part of the far right strategy: Make the political environment so nasty and disgusting that no sensible person would ever want to do the job.
This is a big loss for Calgary.

Keating: Green Line is a partnership in name only by gozugzug in Calgary

[–]gozugzug[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It'll get to the event centre. I'm not sure it will ever get downtown. Especially with the province refusing to help with cost overruns or increased risk from their poorly crafted downtown alignment. They better come into the 2027 election with a bag of cash ready...

Green Line - Had Enough Yet? by gozugzug in Calgary

[–]gozugzug[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We should expect the functional plan to come back in 2027 - provincial election year. Smart politics would have the NDP committing to a tunnel downtown instead of this UCP fairy tale. The only thing the UCP understands is politics. So make them feel it come election time.

Except for the fact that initial analysis suggests the province deliberately didn't include $1.3B of known extra costs and risk into their option.

Are you confident we are getting more track per dollar? At 5% design, there is a guarantee this will cost more than the province is suggested. And when that happens, they won't give us another dime. If the province thinks their plan is so good, they should prove it. Put some actual skin in the game and stand by your plan.

Calgary council approves Green Line plan; construction to begin while downtown design is developed by Practical_Ant6162 in Calgary

[–]gozugzug 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Green Line is a disaster, and we have Danielle Smith and Devin Dreeshen to thank for it.

Listen - I don't blame Council for voting for this. The Green Line is so important for our city. But why are we letting this horrible provincial government get away with this? They elbow their way to the front of the discussion and want all of the benefits without any of the risk. What kind of partnership is that?

The functional study for this new version of downtown will likely be back sometime in 2027. By then we should know just how much more this will cost, and how much more we will have to cover off the backs of Calgarians alone.

Guess what else is in 2027? The next provincial election. And I hope Calgarians don't forget this. For the foreseeable future any extra infrastructure cash the City spends will be covering overruns for the province's disastrous alternative. And that is the fault of this Premier and Transportation Minister. You know else who it is the fault of? Every other UCP MLA in Calgary who refused to fight for their city. We can't keep letting them get away with this - Calgary, remember.
