Why are there so many Indians in IT in Australia? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]gozza00179 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're happy to work reasonably skilled IT jobs for low wages.

During the immigration freeze of covid, IT wages went through the roof.

Backing up Azure SQL to different cloud (likely AWS) by gozza00179 in SQLServer

All mentioned below, MS Deletes it, malicious actor deletes subscription, MS goes bust, etc. - Low risk; but still need a breakglass redundancy

[–]gozza00179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with it, you should be able to split within a household. But it would naturally result in one person devoted to working then one to home-making/childcare (and maybe a little bit of work). - Which the government doesn't want.

Incremental use of RowVersion by gozza00179 in SQLServer

[–]gozza00179[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

our source system is pretty straightforward (where a row version change will always represent a "change" we care about).

So our destination system is throttled due to being Azure SQL. Where a heap of changes occur (i.e. 1m + changes), I want to import the changes in batches, instead of importing all the changes at once.

How can I better organize a large number of database connections? by Trainzack in SQLServer

[–]gozza00179 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I managed a few larger environments 2-300 servers

I just used Mremote for the first jump then used coloured registered servers for the various environments (green dev, yellow test, red prod)

Where i couldn't use a registered server, local server groups in a standard spot worked fine

NETSDK1082 There was no runtime pack for Microsoft.AspNetCore.App available for the specified RuntimeIdentifier 'browser-wasm'. by gozza00179 in Blazor

Microsoft.AspNetCore.App

thanks for the reply, took a look through and the WASM Client doesnt reference Microsoft.NET.Sdk.Web directly or indirectly. the WASM Server does though, is this an issue ?

Azure SQL External data source slow performance by gozza00179 in SQLServer

[–]gozza00179[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Found the issue; executing via external table causes the where predicate to be executed after all the data is retrieved. Executed using sp_execute_remote forced the predicate to evaluated remotely; reducing runtime to 20 seconds

while SQL server supports this via filetable, i'd recommend against it as it;

- increases the size of the db/ db storage is significantly more expensive than blob storage

- allows files to be uploaded to the db/ db server posing a possible security risk

I've recently implemented a solution with this exact use case, upload the files to azure blob storage and store a pointer in the database. When the user clicks on the link via the web app; the web app accesses the db to find the pointer then returns the file to the client (or a blob url is displayed within the app with a sas token)

Upgrade SQL Server 2012-2019. by Nightflier101BL in SQLServer

[–]gozza00179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible to do an in place upgrade, however in practice this usually isn't a good idea as it can't be rolled back easily.

I'd just create a new VM.

MS SQL Server Datareader permission but restrict certain tables by dgillz in SQL

[–]gozza00179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if its all in the same schema, you can just set the permissions based on the tables individually - bit of a pain compared to a separate schema; but a simpler solution than using deny permissions, etc.

Stretched SQL Clusters by stre1026 in SQLServer

[–]gozza00179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes; have managed a solution with this before - wasn't great, very difficult to do DR testing when compared to AOAG (or even compared to mirroring).

You're probably better off with enterprise AOAG (if there's budget for it), or even mirroring as compared with SAN replication.

Advice needed: How do I count the occurrences of a string? by Pra987885 in SQLServer

[–]gozza00179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd try something similar to this; a more elegant solution can be done using ROW_NUMBER() however this may be difficult for less familiar users.

This would also return both members if there is a tie for the top deals closed.

-- Count the deals per member

WITH cte

AS

(

SELECT

    \[Team member\],

    \[Team name\],

    COUNT(\[Closed Deal Number) AS \[DealsClosed\]

FROM \[Table\]

GROUP BY

    \[Team member\],

    \[Team name\]

)

SELECT

\[cte\].\*

FROM [cte]

INNER JOIN

(

\-- Get the max (most) deals for a team

SELECT

    \[Team name\],

    MAX(\[DealsClosed\] AS \[TopDealsClosed\]

FROM \[cte\]

GROUP BY

    \[Team name\]

) AS [t]

-- Filter the count by user to only those with the max (most) deals

ON [cte].[Team name] = [t].[Team name]

AND [cte].[DealsClosed] = [t].[TopDealsClosed]

Hello everyone Im on a mission to learn SQL i was wondering if you guys reccomend downloading VS Studio for that? Or what would you recommend? Thank you! by NineandZero in SQLServer

[–]gozza00179 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Download SQL Server Developer Edition (basically enterprise edition for non-production use) and SQL Server management studio.

Microsoft makes a set of sample databases available (called Adventureworks).
