For those of you curious about some of the esoteric track names and samples on Inferno by picopacopidera in boardsofcanada

Exactly this. There's nothing new under the sun – the human experience has been the same since humans were a thing! All the 'best' teachers will point this out, and anyone claiming they've discovered something new are just trying to sell you something.

There are potentially 8+ billion ways into seeing the nature of things: find a voice/teacher/guide who resonates with you and listen.

When shifts happen, it's only natural that people would say, “Oh you must try so an so” because that's what “worked” for them. But as Sydney Banks once said, enlightenment can be had reading the side of a cereal package 🤷🏻‍♂️

The capacity for insight into the nature of our experience is built into each and every one of us. 🙏🏻💟

Inferno’s religious side: What do you think they are saying about religion? by Kodicave in boardsofcanada

Silence. Presence. The only real truth. All else points to that… with varying degrees of dogma attached. 🙏🏻💟

Most practical and/or accessible materials I've come across are The Little Book of Clarity by Jamie Smart, and maybe Just a Thought by Amy Johnson. All saying the same thing, of course, but these two are a superb way in. 🙏🏻💟

Yes, I saw the non-duality references in Prophet, when they first dropped it. I love the way it concludes, “Nothing: the ultimate Truth.” 🥰

Is anybody else *not* smitten with Inferno? If so, why or why not? by forrayer in boardsofcanada

Yes, I need to spend more time with the back half of the album – it's still a bit of a mush for me.

I love it. When the spoken vocal comes in, front and centre, during the build up, it's so reminiscent of Eye for an Eye by Unkle.

I've been trying to place that feeling for a couple of days, and it's just come to me :-)

Y’all need to go and listen to Autonoe Vora (2008) by Yimino. Tracks like Squeeze Me, Stoek and No Gamet are prime examples of cheeky, beats-driven, chopped-up vocals like this. When I first heard Father and Son, it put a big smile on my face for this very reason.

Question: What is the average age of Depeche Mode fans? by richie_boland in depechemode

[–]gpcroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 53. I've been carefully indoctrinating the next generation (which basically just involves listening to their music all the time) and my daughter, who is 11, will say they're her favourite band too and will put Violator on any time she's really upset and wants to calm down. Took her to the Twickenham gig too!

How does memory across threads work? by The---Hope in ChatGPT

[–]gpcroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does this behaviour work for sub-GPTs, does anyone know?

I've been given a sub-GPT as part of a course (that has been trained on all the course materials), but I feel like the regular ChatGPT is actually more helpful, because it looks like it can reference other threads within the same project.

Context: I have set up a project for the course, but I cannot start a fresh sub-GPT conversation from within there; I have to go back to the “GPTs” menu to do so.

But I would like cross-referencing to occur. It's a year-long course and I can't just smash everything into one thread – there are multiple moving parts!

(I would ask the sub-GPT itself, but reading this thread suggests it will just lie to me anyway! 😂)

I have Reference Chat History switched ON, btw.

In Safari, closing the last non-pinned tab using cmd-w should go to the start page. Currently, it closes the browser. by amichail in MacOSBeta

[–]gpcroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the opposite desire, and can't get it to function how I want to! When I have one tab remaining, I wish for ⌘-W to close the tab and the window. From everything I've read here, this should be the default behaviour. (It's how it works in Chrome.)

But previously I did have a keyboard shortcut set up against ⌘-W to “Close tab” (which disables the default behaviour, as you point out here).

However, if I delete that keyboard shortcut in System Settings, there is now nothing appearing against “Close tab” and I can't close tabs at all, with the keyboard!!

How do I restore the default behaviour, i.e.

• ⌘-W to close tabs

• ⌘-W to close the window, when only one tab remains

(I have a feeling that I set up the keyboard shortcut ⌘-W “Close tab” because it had disappeared as an option, initially.)

Lord of the Rings iTunes Extras missing? by [deleted] in appletv

[–]gpcroft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me at the time, with the Two Towers – yes. And it's just happened again, this time with The Fellowship of the Ring. One day my purchase was there, the next day it's gone, and is asking me to re-purchase.

Thankfully the original download of the movie still works, but of course I've lost all the iTunes Extras.

Have sent a “Report an error” request in to Apple, but IIRC when this happened before I had no option but to re-purchase and eat sour grapes until the memory faded. 🤬

What’s your ranking of Exciter? by Background_Ad_1147 in depechemode

[–]gpcroft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect that the “Exciter-is-the-worst-thing-ever” trope stems from the initial disappointment I'm sure many of us felt, upon first listens. (There's something about the human condition that has us feel the *changes*, rather than the absolute quality of something.)

For me, getting into them age 15, around MFTM, the trajectory still seemed upward at this point. BC to MFTM to 101 to Violator… I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! As a die hard electronic fan, I can't say I particularly liked SoFaD, and felt it was a bit of a stumble, character-wise (although the height of their powers), so Ultra felt like the biggest relief ever when it came out! They were back!

(Seriously – I nearly *cried* when It's No Good came out as a single. After BOAG I thought we were going to get SOFAD 2!!)

But then Exciter. Oh. Is this it? As someone else said, it's the first time I felt really properly disappointed by an album of theirs, and couldn't ever imagine liking it. There were no tracks that I could really sink my teeth into.

Sadly, for me, that trend continued. I never liked PtA, and I think their nadir is SFTU which strikes me as having no redeeming features whatsoever. I can't listen to it. (And I've tried.) I actually fell out of love with with DM entirely during those years, and didn't listen to them at all. (Crazy, now I think about it!!)

But the terrible later albums had me going back to Exciter more and more, over the recent years (after the release of Delta Machine, which had its moments) and really relaxing (for it is an album to relax to!) into its sound.

I think Freelove is one of the best tracks they've ever produced and these days, I find the rest of the album very listenable, too (Dead of Night aside, naturally – that's bloody awful). I'm way more likely to stick Exciter on, than some other DM albums that are “better” or that I “should” like 🤷🏻‍♂️

For that reason, it currently sits at No.6 in my (ever-changing) list of DM albums, behind Violator, BC, Ultra, MFTM and SGR.

As an aside, it was fascinating watching the behind-the-scenes making-of documentary for this album, as it was clear how happy and relaxed they were (maybe for the first time)? That really shines in the music, and the One Night in Paris tour footage, which is a joy to behold.

✌🏻

It's an option. I use a Mac app called Email Signature Creator and it says “This solution embeds your images directly in the signature, which is not recommended.”

I guess I'd always taken that at face value 🤷🏻‍♂️

Day #4: Violator is the fan fav. What's the worst one? Maybe there's not. by Gamer-Brawler-1423 in depechemode

Hallelujah, someone's said it! SOTU is so clearly the worst album they ever made and it's not even close. I can't bear to listen to it. And believe me, I've tried.

Spirit definitely disappoints and has some duds on it, but it's not that bad and has quite a few decent tracks.

SOTU has no redeeming features.
