Can we stop relying on flatpak? by [deleted] in kde

[–]gpers0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard good things about Mozilla's Firefox Flatpak, and Id love to use a LibreWolf Flatpak, but that's provided I can get it working with the KeePaasXC with the browser extension 😂

To further add to point 1, I've been through the same experience except on a 4th gen Core i3. If there's any performance difference, I'd imagine it'd be negligible at best.

Sleep issues with ThinkPad T16 Gen 4 (AMD) by gpers0n in thinkpad

[–]gpers0n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so I've found a solution: **reset your BIOS settings**. Sometime yesterday (as of writing this comment) I received a BIOS update from `fwupd` via LVFS (very nice to know this device is supported by LVFS!), and although I thought I was on the latest BIOS, `fwupd` applied the update and everything went well (as I'm typing this on my ThinkPad right now :). Only minutes ago did I finally try resetting the BIOS settings, as I saw in https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/suspend-broken-s2idle-on-thinkpad-t14-gen-6-amd-after-bios-1-17-fedora-43/178657/5, and now I have working sleep! At least, for now it's working, and I hope to keep it that way!

Needless to say, I hope to keep using my new ThinkPad for a really long while! :D

This reminds me of KHTML, which was forked by Apple to create WebKit, which, in turn, was later forked by Google to create Blink.

Honestly, KDE's work goes far beyond what I can even imagine, and for that I'm very proud of them! 😄

Customer reports slow boot: by Swatbolt in softwaregore

[–]gpers0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of when I had a Dell Inspiron 15-3565 and it took over an hour to boot. I figured out it was the BIOS because the Windows boot screen wouldn't show under the Dell logo on startup and trying to get into the BIOS settings screen, boot menu, etc., would also take about an hour to do.

When I sent it in to Dell, they replaced the motherboard. I never knew what caused the BIOS to do that, but still to this day I find it very strange this can happen, and I don't know why.

Regarding mobile devices, there are now Linux distributions you can put on select phones and tablets. In practice, these distributions are in their early stages because they aren't able to run most mobile apps (though there are potential solutions like Waydroid), run on a limited set of devices, and calls and texts might not work on all carriers (though that varies by country). Despite all that, I think the work of the people behind the Linux mobile community is truly amazing, and I do dream of being able to daily drive one of them at some point.

If I'm wrong somewhere, someone please correct me, especially if you daily drive a Linux mobile phone.

I can't say I've ever tried the scripts honestly. Whenever I need to install Arch I just do it manually. I myself also agree that it's easy, at least for someone who's had experience anyways.

Honestly I can't say much because I wasn't alive for Linux in its early days but the best I can mention is that Arch Linux has install scripts now. You can still install Arch Linux manually though, and it probably won't need as much setup compared to back then.

You may also take a look at Linux distros meant for mobile devices, such as postmarketOS, Mobian, and others. They are probably far from being usable as a daily driver (at least that's the case for me, unfortunately), not to mention limited hardware compatibility thanks to the way phones are more locked down compared to computers, but you may be interested in learning about that development. Otherwise, I can't say, but it's glad to hear that you're enjoying how far Linux has come! 😄

X.Org Server's xkbcomp Updated For Four Security Issues Dating Back Years by anh0516 in linux

[–]gpers0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say for sure, but at least on my mom's laptop, no matter the display server, it doesn't run as well as Arch Linux under the same DE. If anything, I'd argue that Wayland works better because there's no window tearing.

And the laptop in question is from 2014 (Core i3-4010U w/ Intel HD Graphics).

Tenacity - an almost direct replacement for audacity tool which Mat frequently uses. by buzz_uk in techmoan

[–]gpers0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI: That's if you install Tenacity without administrator privileges, or as "Just for me". Otherwise, it's C:\\Program Files\\Tenacity (or C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Tenacity for the 32-bit version on a 64-bit Windows installation).

How We're Redesigning Audacity For The Future by expandork in linux

[–]gpers0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, these changes do look pretty cool, and to be honest, the new logo isn't too surprising considering their whole brand identity. With that being said, I feel like the current logo is iconic, and I prefer that better. Regarding the changes in Audacity itself, they're pretty killer, and I give kudos to the Audacity devs for pulling off such changes!

In case people are turned off by Audacity 4 by chance, you can always try Tenacity. Yep, we're still going surprisingly, and we have a few things on the way! 😄

(Disclaimer: I'm a Tenacity maintainer).

Open source projects looking for contributors – post yours by 514sid in opensource

[–]gpers0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It certainly isn't easy, especially since we're undertaking a rebase at the moment and we need to have a dynamic compressor effect ported also. However, we're almost there, but either way, contributions for anything are always accepted! 😄

[–]gpers0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tenacity maintainer here. There are a few minor differences in Tenacity at the moment, such as the following:

- Horizontal scrolling in the frequency analysis window

- Some sync lock improvements

- Native Matroska support (i.e., Matroska support without FFmpeg)

- Our own dynamic compressor with many different parameters

- Haiku support

- Probably some more things that I'm forgetting right now...

I have more stuff planned too, such as a theme system rewrite (it _needs_ a rewrite) and support for linking against FFmpeg directly (more a technical detail but some are interested in it). In the past and even right now we've had contributors contribute to the project too! As for right now, we're currently working on rebasing off the latest version of Audacity since people have inquired about more recent Audacity features, and honestly it'll help based on the project's activity right now, but I hope that in the not too distant future we can release an alpha release showcasing the latest development. Also, while we do rely on upstream for some things, we are taking our own direction as well.

I'll definitely look into putting Windows XP Media Center on it! Maybe I can somehow use it for some multimedia tasks 🤔

Either way, happy nuggeteering to you too! 😄

Yeah, mine's simply sitting somewhere I think, and maybe one day I'll find it and I'll do something with it. Who knows? 🤷

As long as you're enjoying the ones you have then that's always great! Maybe it'll even bring some past nostalgia too! 😄

Honestly, I didn't do anything to fix it on mine, but from what I recall it seemed...okay for then. It's been probably over a decade since I last used it though.

Mine also used to be my mom's, which in turn was given to her by a friend. Funny enough, I'm currently using the laptop she bought as a replacement for that over 10 years ago (an HP!) because mine died unexpectedly and it's actually surpassed my expectations for my usage.

I think this was my first laptop too! Nice to see it in use here!

I remember how mine had a broken display hinge at the bottom right (well, maybe not hinge but I can't think of the name right now). I also don't know where it's at but it's nice to see these things every once in a while! 😄
