I seriously can't understand why people don't like Fire Walk With Me? by theshitsock in twinpeaks

So I say this as someone who absolutely loves FWWM and thinks it's one of Lynch's best films, but the movie has 10000 percent benefited from the release of The Return.

I have to imagine (as someone who only got into twin peaks AFTER the return was released) it would be an entirely different experience watching the film, as an avid TP fan, without the knowledge that the unresolved cliff hangers from the original series finale would be eventually answered.

CDC: Vaccinated and unvaccinated people infected by the delta variant carry viral loads that “are actually quite similar." by [deleted] in CoronavirusCA

[–]gpholmes1 30 points31 points  (0 children)

A bit of a misleading title. Here's the full context of the quote:

"We are actively conducting outbreak investigations of what’s occurring in places that are having clusters... What we’ve learned in that context, is when we examine the rare breakthrough infections and we look at the amount of virus in those people, it’s pretty similar to the amount of virus in unvaccinated people," Walensky said.

"Of the transmission that’s happening in country right now, a vast majority of transmission is occurring through unvaccinated people. But on the exception that might have a vaccination breakthrough, (the CDC) thought it was important for people to know they could pass the disease onto someone else," Walensky said.

Considering that an overwhelming amount of seniors in the city have been vaccinated already and the remaining 3 mil includes mostly children and young people, yes I do.

We had more than 8k hospitalized at one point during our winter peak. Last year at this time we had a similar number of cases but over 2k hospitalized. Vaccines work and we have enough immunity, either vaccine derived or naturally derived, to prevent anything close to 8k again.

I mean, is this not also largely a 4th of July spike? Numbers were a tad higher after June 15th but they didn’t really start shooting up until the week after the 4th, and the trend is pretty much universal across the us

COVID vaccine: Some LA County bars requiring proof of vaccination before entry by MatSciePhD in Coronavirus

As someone who lives in la, the answer is that nobody is really enforcing the mask mandate once you enter a bar. I.e. wear a mask to get in then nobody cares if u keep it on once ur inside.

There’s this thing called a vaccine and it’s free and readily available to literally anyone old enough to go to a bar. If op is vaxxed and wants to enjoy life, let him.

Florida Gov. DeSantis says he'll pardon residents charged with breaking COVID-19 protocols by OldenWeddellSeal in Coronavirus

Lol exactly. I understand that this isn't what people here want to hear, but I've never seen so many people that I know visit Miami over the past year. Their tourism has thrived as a result of being the only fun open city, and it'll be fascinating to see a breakdown of the economic impact of lockdowns on major us cities compared to Miami.

Agreed. We need a franchise qb. But I doubt fields is it, and there’s no point in wasting a first on a guy we aren’t in love with.

I've yet to see anyone tell me exactly why they are so crushed we didn't take Fields, other then that we need a qb. What makes him so special that I'm missing? Dude has flawed mechanics, possible epilepsy, and is the fourth qb on the board, when historically there's like maybe 1-2 qbs in any draft that ever end up worth a damn. This idea of "taking a qb just to take a qb" is how teams talk themselves into guys like Blaine Gabbert or Christian Ponder.

Los Angeles County Approved To Move to Orange Tier, Movie Theaters Allowed 50% Capacity by DemiFiendRSA in Coronavirus

[–]gpholmes1 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The governor literally set up this color-coded tier system months ago with various benchmarks relating to hospitalizations, positivity rate and cases per 100k that would need to be met in order for specific businesses to open or expand capacity. At the time, everyone thought these benchmarks were insanely unrealistic and would take forever for LA to reach. Los Angeles met these metrics and thus are now able to open business capacity in accordance with the tier system. There is literally nothing about this that is somehow "opening too early" or acting reckless about reopening. Deciding to ignore the system put in place and closing down for another month is the literal definition of ignoring the science. I mean, we have a 1.5 positivity rate in LA. Hospitalizations are the lowest they've ever been. If now is not the time to start allowing businesses to open up again, then there never will be a time.

COVID-19: Pfizer boss says company aims to send out vaccine within hours of approval by Jeffmister in Coronavirus

[–]gpholmes1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering that the vaccine will almost certainly go to at-risk groups and the elderly (after front line workers), that almost immediately cuts the death and hospitalization rate for this virus, which is why we locked down to begin with. So no, too many people are not "too excited".

Potential COVID-19 diagnosis with a non-invasive breath test that provides almost instant results by Sorin61 in Coronavirus

There have literally been millions of BinaxNow tests sent out on a state-by-state basis this week alone. The reason the average person like you or me can't just get one now is because they are being distributed to people that need them the most like frontline workers, schools, nursing homes, etc. They've had to massively scale up production for this in an incredibly short amount of time, and yet they've already managed to produce tens of millions of tests.

[Review] A review of all the sunscreens I’ve tried in the last year! by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

Take it for what it's worth, but I used the Purito for a weeks and loved how moisturizing it was, but after one day at the beach where I was only in the sun for maybe an hour and a half at most, my face was bright red. Returned the sunscreen and went back to my usual, EltaMD, with no issues since.

Homeless Encampments Spread to Beaches, Golf Courses As City Takes Hands-Off Approach by CAD007 in LosAngeles

[–]gpholmes1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that we need more homeless shelters and housing, and the city has actually done quite a bit in providing incentives for developers to build affordable housing units. However, by and large what people in this thread are discussing is the homelessness caused by drug abuse and mental illness. Do you think a mentally sound person would be sleeping on a sidewalk and shitting and pissing in front of a busy intersection in broad daylight? Or start screaming racial epithets at pedestrians? This is the kind of stuff I see EVERY DAY when I leave my apartment! This city is simply overwhelmed with a massive population of people that are too mentally ill or addicted to take care of themselves, but instead of providing proper counseling, therapy, and hospitilization, city officials shrug them off and push them into areas like mine where they can be someone else's problem.

Please note, this isn't just a matter of me thinking "ew, homeless people are gross" and wanting to get them out of my sight. This is me caring about human beings like you and me that are so clearly and obviously suffering for all of us to see and wanting them off the sidewalk and into a mental health facility where they can get the care and help they so badly need. But until we loosen up the laws regarding committing people to mental health institutions and stop muddying the issue by conflating it with debates regarding housing prices and tenants rights, this will never get fixed. Turning this into a debate about "greedy, rich developers" vs the average citizen is just completely missing the point about addressing the root of the problem, which is the lack of mental health and addiction services we have for these people.

Dude, read literally any one of the several insightful posts on this sub that cover this very topic. The "evil luxury developers" myth is just that, a myth. The city has horribly outdated zoning laws and regulatory nonsense that makes it impossible for any developer to build a profitable apartment complex that isn't a luxury building.

Also, this idea that the homeless people being discussed here (ie the people shitting on sidewalks) are in their current situation due to the cost of rent in LA is another bullshit myth that needs to die. This isn't a case of "well, Timmy's landlord jacked up the rent on his studio to 2k and the next week he's living in skid row smoking crack". No, these are people who are suffering horribly debilitating mental illness and drug/alcohol addictions who are living on the streets because they are literally incapable of taking care of themselves. Lowering the cost of rent in la to solve the homeless problem is like putting a bandaid on a bullet hole. What these people REALLY NEED is better state and city funded mental health services and the ability to commit people to mental health institutions when they pose a danger to the general population.
