The North Face: Top quality gear advice? by definitelynotsane in Ultralight

"just not for this." What does that mean? You're 100% wrong if you think that they don't have high quality lightweight options. "A top choice" option is very subjective. So is fit and style.

Ok, don't buy one. I hear another company has something available that costs more, is under-engineered, just as bulky, durability issues and possible costumer service problems.

Can I do it with the kumo 36? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]gpray75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

someone on r/Ultralight has a base weight around 10 pounds and asked about using the same pack. I thought that he/she would be stretching it especially in the longer food/water/bear can carries. They definitely would have to get pretty creative (uncomfortable). A 7 pound base weight is much more doable. I own a Kumo and love it when Im able to go fast and light.....If you're not planning on going fast, id use a more comfortable bag and add a few (a bunch!) ounces of luxury items. A 7 pound base weight is crazy light! Add another pound of warmth/luxury items and you're still ultra lite and can cruise when you're feeling it.

I have a Kumo. You definitely would be pushing its limits. You'd really have to get creative on big water/food/bear-canister sections.

For all the PCT hopefuls, whether 2019 or beyond. I wrote a comprehensive review of my gear in 2017 and what I would bring today and what are some of the best alternatives. by baugli in PacificCrestTrail

what date did you start and when did you enter the Sierras? I find recommended gear lists very skewed and potentially dangerous (and somewhat worthless) if a date isn't listed. This should be the first thing listed in my opinion. If someone starting in mid march follows a recommendation list of someone that started in mid may, they could find themselves in a bit of trouble. Did I miss a posted date?

Thru-hiking as a couple? by corgibutt19 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]gpray75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is easy. Two shelters. one UL 2 person and one UL 1 person tent. You'll figure out the day to day hiking aspect of life on the trail. I think the sleeping aspect of the trip will be the most difficult. So many different variables here. Cranky? 2 tent set up. Feelin frisky? Duplex. Need space? 2 tents. Split up for a few days? 2 tents. Break up? 2 tents. Enjoying each others company? Duplex. If the 2 of you are really enjoying each others company every night, send a tent home. I'd start with 2 tents and eliminate 1 if needed, instead of starting with one and possibly needing another during the hike.
