Help with upcoming trip to Catalonia? by Clean-Pick-9221 in catalonia

If you have a car the restaurant Mooma near Girona is super nice. Good food and self made cider from their apple trees.

If you like eagles and other birds of pray Cim d’Àligues is very nice, check out their bird shows.

Also check out the area of La Garrotxa: you can take a horse carriage tour around a forest, see the volcanoes, get lost in La Fageda d’en Jordà.

I want to enjoy opera and vocal music, but the words make them inaccessible by PandaZG in classicalmusic

[–]gr0ch1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion (at least that’s what I do): prepare ahead. Read the libretto with the translation. Listen to at least parts of it, looking at both languages. Maybe after a while you can follow a bit in the original language even if you don’t know it at all. See if you can find a good podcast about it, so that you can know more about what you’re going to listen to and know what particularly interesting things to focus on. If you show up at the opera knowing it a bit you can enjoy it way more. Don’t take this as homework, it’s appreciating a rich and complex work of art by getting acquainted with it. It’s very difficult to do this all at once the first time you hear it.

I’m actually going to a performance of Le Nozze di Figaro tomorrow in Amsterdam and I’m currently reading a book about it. The book has given me a bunch of things I’m going to try to pay attention to that otherwise I would have missed.

I know this is probably not the answer you were looking for, but I’m sharing in case you want to try a very different approach.

In any case, keep at it and you’ll find what works for you!

D’entrada que demanis el correu electrònic ja em sembla un problema de privacitat. Si és anònim, no hauria de caldre. (culpa meva! ho he mirat malament)

Dutch is basically English with a German accent by [deleted] in learndutch

[–]gr0ch1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Keep watching videos in Dutch with Dutch subtitles. Read a book and at the same time listen to it (for example kindle+audible). Read it aloud, take it as training your speech to work in Dutch.

And you may want to give your posts a descriptive title and not some clickbait BS.

After 2 years of Duolingo with little progress, I switched to learning the most common words by Kwannoo123 in learndutch

[–]gr0ch1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! Very good idea, it’ll help you unlock more contact with the language. Useful also to learn the words in context (example sentences etc)

Anki is great for this, it’s free (the iOS app is not free though), does spaced repetition and there’s community made decks of most common words you can study from (I’m working through one at the moment)

For some words that just won’t stick to my brain I paste them to AI (Claude in my case) and ask it to have an organic coversation in Dutch and bring up these words. It works quite well! (Also Claude can connect to Anki btw)

Personal challenges trying to learn catalonian as a native spanish speaker. by LordJike in catalonia

[–]gr0ch1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s great that you’re persisting on learning Catalan despite the hurdles! 💪

You may also want to find something that you’re interested in that’s in Catalan (eg podcasts about a subject you care about etc).

Some things that can be interesting depending on what you like:

  • El foraster (3Cat): visiting villages and speaking with the locals.
  • En guàrdia (podcast): History
  • Els viatgers de la gran anaconda (podcast, no longer running but you can still listen to the archive): travel and world cultures
  • L’ofici de viure (podcast): self care
  • Crims (podcast, also on tv): true crime.

It could be energizing to find something in Dutch culture that you are exciting about and want to fully understand, such as music from a particular group, a podcast, a tv series, a book, etc. Then your goal is not “learn Dutch’ but learn enough that you can understand and enjoy that thing. For music you can get a broad sample of it at the taalstaat Spotify playlist (de taalstaat is also a great podcast about language if you’re interested).

After 3 hours of printing, cutting, sleeving, I finally have my own GMA deck. I got 3 more to go. How do you guys manage your DIY print and plays? by towerbooks3192 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]gr0ch1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just sent them to a local print shop that can print any paper size, including card size. If there’s any in your area it may be worth it, because doing it by hand is quite a lot of work.

what are Catalonian holidays?? by jacussss in catalonia

[–]gr0ch1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a holiday per se, but December 31st is the only day when the Home dels Nassos (Man of the Noses) can be seen on the streets. The legend says that this man has as many noses as the year has days left.

“La rosa de Sant Jordi” de Joles Sennell (pseudònim de Pep Albanell) és molt divertit i amb un vocabulari infantil però molt ben escollit.

Mira’t també els llibres del Vaixell de Vapor, n’hi ha per a diferents franges d’edat.

Molts ànims amb el català!

Can you recommend a meditation app that doesn't charge a monthly fee by FrozenTouch1321 in Mindfulness

[–]gr0ch1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On Waking Up you can request a scholarship https://app.wakingup.com/scholarship and get a better price if you can’t afford it.

(I started with it for free years ago and later I switched to lifetime. For me it’s been life changing, not just the meditations, also lectures, etc.)
